2 Safety2.1 Appropriate usageThe Automatic Switch Box is a switching unit for Backup systems. The Sunny Backup regulates and controls the Automatic Switch Box and forms a stand-alone grid in case of a power outage. During a grid failure, the Automatic Switch Box safely disconnects the connected PV plant and the connected loads from the power distribution grid and connects them to the stand-alone grid.In case you ordered the Automatic Switch Box with generator connection, you can include a generator into your Backup system. If a generator is included into the Backup system, it can be connected to the stand-alone grid via the Automatic Switch Box in case of a grid failure, if required. The Automatic Switch Box M-20 and the Automatic Switch Box L-20 are both suited for TT systems and TN systems. You may operate the Automatic Switch Box M-20 only in combination with a Sunny Backup 5000 and the Automatic Switch Box L-20 only in combination with 3 Sunny Backup 5000. In a 3-phase Backup system you must configure one of the 3 Sunny Backup systems as a master and the other 2 as slave. The Sunny Backup master evaluates the data recorded in the Automatic Switch Box, coordinates all switching operations and controls all components of the Backup system. You will find further information in the Sunny Backup 5000 manual.Do not exceed the maximum connection power of the individual outgoing lines in the Automatic Switch Box. You will find the maximum connection power in section 10 ”Technical Data”, page 53.Do not use the Automatic Switch Box for purposes other than those described here. Alternative uses, modifications, and the installation of components void the warranty claims and operation permit. This guide is part of the Automatic Switch Box. Pay attention to all the activities described in this guide. Keep this guide in a convenient place for future reference.

5.3 Connecting functional and operational grounding

TN system:When connecting in a TN system, only connect a functional grounding. This connection activates the EMC interference elimination measures in the Automatic Switch Box. The functional grounding is not identical to the protective grounding of the Automatic Switch Box.TT system:When connecting in a TT system, connect an operational and a functional grounding. This connection activates the EMC interference elimination measures in the Automatic Switch Box. By means of the operational grounding, the neutral conductor of the Sunny Backup is grounded via a resistor. The operational and the functional grounding are not identical to the protective grounding of the Automatic Switch Box.Requirements:☐ In case of a functional grounding, the cable cross-section for copper cables is 6 mm².☐ In case of a redundant connection of the operational grounding, the cable cross-section for

each copper cable is ≥ 6 mm².☐ In case of an ordinary connection of the operational grounding, the cable cross-section for

copper cables is ≥ 10 mm².

Connection terminals "PE" in the Automatic Switch Box

The Automatic Switch Box corresponds to protection class II. The connection terminals "PE" in the connection area do not serve as a protective grounding of the Automatic Switch Box enclosure. Via the connection terminals "PE" in the connection area of the Automatic Switch Box, PE of the individual terminals will only be routed through the Automatic Switch Box and distributed in the following installation.

5.4 Activating the phase coupling for 1-phase Backup SystemIn case of a grid failure, the Automatic Switch Box M can supply loads which are not connected to the Backup-Phase L1. In the event of a grid failure, you can choose whether the Automatic Switch Box connects all 3 phases or just 2 phases. As soon as the power distribution grid returns, the Automatic Switch Box disconnects the connected phases.

• Switch on switch-disconnector "Q9" and "Q10" for coupling all 3 phases in the case of a grid failure.

• Switch on switch-disconnector "Q9" for coupling L1 and L2 in case of a grid failure.• Switch on switch-disconnector "Q10" for coupling L1 and L3 in case of a grid failure.• Attach warning sticker "phase coupling" in the distribution when phase coupling is activated.• Check if the parameter "224.01 SilentEna" of the Sunny Backup is set to Disable when phase

coupling is activated. If the parameter "224.01 SilentEna" is set to Enable, set the parameter on Disable. This is to deactivate the "Silent Mode" of the Sunny Backup and to make the phase coupling of the Automatic Switch Box possible.

Switch-over times to Backup operationThe switch-over times for the loads on L2 and L3 are longer than for the loads on the Backup-phase L1. The switch-over times just take seconds.

Capacity overload of Sunny Backup during phase coupling• Only activate phase couplings for phases whose power does not exceed the maximum

power of the Sunny Backup (see section 10 "Technical data", Page 52).

Destruction of 3-phase loads during phase coupling.• During phase coupling only connect 1-phase loads to the Automatic Switch Box.

5.5 Connecting LoadsOvercurrent protective device and switch-disconnector:During stand-alone grid operation, the Sunny Backup and the PV plant supply the loads. This disables the fuse on the grid side. During stand-alone grid operation, the fuse-switch-disconnector "AS-F5" protects the loads' cables against overload.

Requirements for the residual current device in the TT system:☐ The nominal tripping current is 100 mA maximum.☐ Secure tripping with several residual current devices is provided if

g x ΣIΔN ≤ 100 mA.g = coincidence factor of the residual current devicesΣIΔN = total of nominal tripping currents of the residual current devicesCoincidence factorg = 1 corresponds to 1 residual current device in the system.g = 0.5 corresponds to 2 ... 4 residual current devices in the system.g = 0.35 corresponds to 5 ... 10 residual current devices in the system.g = 0.25 corresponds to > 10 residual current devices in the system.

Risk of lethal electric shock in the TT system without personal protection.• Install residual current devices between the Backup system and the loads' electric circuit.

5.6 Connecting the PV PlantConnecting other energy sources:Instead of the PV plant, you can also connect other energy sources (e.g. small wind turbine systems) to the Automatic Switch Box. In any case, make sure that an energy meter with the corresponding tariff is connected to the Automatic Switch Box.A mixing of energy sources (e.g. the connection of a PV plant and a small wind turbine system) is not admissible on the part of the network operator since the supply rates of the energy sources differ.TN systems: Overcurrent protective deviceThe Automatic Switch Box does not replace the distributor box or fuse box of the PV plant.

• Install a line circuit breaker between the Automatic Switch Box and the PV plant. Be sure to observe all standards applicable to the installation site.

TT system: residual current deviceThe Automatic Switch Box does not replace the distributor box or fuse box of the PV plant.

• Install a residual current device and a line circuit breaker between the Automatic Switch Box and the PV plant. Be sure to observe the requirements for residual current devices.

Requirements for the residual current device in the TT system:☐ The residual current device is suitable for leakage currents of the PV inverter.☐ The nominal tripping current is 100 mA maximum.☐ Secure tripping with several residual current devices is provided if

g x ΣIΔN ≤ 100 mA.g = coincidence factor of the residual current devicesΣIΔN = total of nominal tripping currents of the residual current devicesCoincidence factorg = 1 corresponds to 1 residual current device in the system.g = 0.5 corresponds to 2 ... 4 residual current devices in the system.g = 0.35 corresponds to 5 ... 10 residual current devices in the system.g = 0.25 corresponds to > 10 residual current devices in the system.

Cable Requirements:☐ The cable is dimensioned according to the fuse between the feed-in meter and the

Automatic Switch Box and according to the cross-section of the connection terminals.☐ In a Backup system with generator, the output fuse of the generator has been taken into account:

if the generator feed-in at the terminal strip "AS-X6/ Generator" has a higher fuse than the cable of the feed-in meter, the cables of the PV plant are dimensioned for this increased fuse value.

5.8 Connecting the Consumption Meter

Connection terminals:

Risk of lethal electric shock. The residual current devices between the power distribution grid and the Automatic Switch Box would lose its protective function due to the Backup system. Since the Backup system makes the tripping of the residual current device ineffective.

• Do not install a residual current device between the power distribution grid and the Automatic Switch Box.

Risk of electric shock due to connected neutral conductor when connecting in a TN system. The Backup system requires a grounded neutral conductor in order to form a TN grid in case of a grid failure and be able to apply the appropriate protective measures.

• Do not install any switching elements in the grounded neutral conductor to the Automatic Switch Box.

Risk of electric shock due to incorrect grounding of the PEN conductor on the grid side in case of a connection to a TN system.

• Ground the PEN conductor on the grid side within the house connection box (e.g. when the house connection box is linked to the equipotential bonding bar).

Destruction of the Automatic Switch Box due to missing back-up fuse.To limit a possible short-circuit current from the power distribution grid and to secure the cables in the Automatic Switch Box, a fuse between the consumption meter and the Automatic Switch Box is necessary.

• Insert a back-up fuse into the distribution. Take the nominal current, the short-circuit switching capacities and the maximum cut-off current into account (see section 10 ”Technical Data”, page 53).

50 AS-BOX-M_L-IA-IEN110320 Installation Guide

8 Maintenance and CleaningThe Automatic Switch Box must be maintained and, if necessary, cleaned at regular intervals. SMA Solar Technology AG recommends to carry out particular maintenance work every 12 months. Note that the maintenance interval is influenced by the installation site and the ambient conditions. If the Automatic Switch Box is used in a TN system, the operational grounding resistance needs to be checked every 5 years.

Maintaining the Automatic Switch Box• Check interior of the Automatic Switch Box for dirt, moisture and water penetration.

– If necessary, clean the Automatic Switch Box and take appropriate actions.• Check all connections to ensure that they are securely in place.

– If necessary, re-connect the cables to the connection terminals.• Check cable insulations, connection terminals and thermal fuses for discoloration.

– If external cabling (e.g. cables leading to loads, PV plant, generator etc.) is discolored, exchange the cables.

– If interior cabling (e.g. cables leading to contactors or thermal fuses) is discolored, contact the SMA Serviceline.

Checking the operational grounding resistance1. Disconnect the Automatic Switch Box from voltage sources (see section 7).2. Measure the resistance value between the connection terminals "N" of the terminal strips

"AS-X2/ SBU 5000" and "GND (PE)" of the terminal strip "AS-X8" with a test equipment having an overvoltage category of at least 3.☑ The resistance is between 225 ohm and 275 ohm.✖ The resistance is smaller than 225 ohm or larger than 275 ohm?

The N-PE resistance is defective.• Contact the SMA Serviceline.
