IP/Ethernet is rapidly advancing as the primary protocol for delivering voice, video and data services in the network. The ADTRAN® Total Access® 5000 Switch
Module 5 (SM5) 10-GE enhances the already
robust, carrier-class switching capability of
the ADTRAN Total Access 5000 Multi-Service
Access and Aggregation Platform by offering
multiple 10 GE network and ring interfaces.
With the ability to be deployed in both central
office and remote terminal locations, the SM5
10 GE provides flexible network deployment
options, easily scaling to support applica-
tions such as Enhanced Broadband, IPTV,
VoIP, Metro Ethernet, service aggregation, and
next generation Optical Network Edge (ONE)
using 10 G Network Interfaces and Ethernet
Ring Protection Switching (ERPS) support for
network transport.
The Total Access 5000 SM5 10-GE provides
four interfaces on the faceplate which may
be used in a variety of ways depending on the
application needs. Two XFP ports are provided
to be used as 10 Gbps network interfaces or
10 Gbps ERPS based Ethernet ring ports. The
two additional SFP interfaces may be used
as 1 Gbps network interfaces or 2.5 Gbps
inter-node transport interfaces. In addition,
ports of the same speed may be configured to
support LAG (IEEE 802.3ad Link Aggregation)
to increase the bandwidth between nodes or
toward the core network.
The Total Access 5000 SM5 supports ITU
G.8032 Ethernet Ring Protection Switching
(ERPS) which provides network operators with
the ability to create resilient Ethernet rings
with multiple Total Access 5000 Nodes. ERPS
gives operators the ability to increase their
network footprint and size while maintaining a
single access point to their IP/Ethernet core.
In order to support the increased capacity
of the technologies being used in the access
slots of the The Total Access 5000, the SM5
10-GE supports a high capacity switch fabric.
The increased capacity of the switch fabric
for the Total Access 5000 SM5 10-GE allows
operators to scale their network and subscriber
bandwidth for years to come without having to
perform a forklift replacement. The SM5 10-GE
is supported in all existing Total Access 5000
and 5006 systems that have been deployed
worldwide.
Like all other Total Access 5000 Switch
Modules, the SM5 10-GE provides quality of
service using IEEE 802.1p priority bits and
802.1Q VLAN tagging. Network and subscriber
proxy ARP, MAC address to port binding, and
DHCP Layer 2 relay functions enhance secu-
rity to protect against “spoofing” attacks and
service theft. The Total Access 5000 SM5 10-GE
can be deployed either simplex or redundant,
with sub 100 ms failover times to support even
the most critical traffic.
System CLI and Web GUI management
are available through Ethernet or VT100
terminal emulation (RS-232) using the System
Controller Module (SCM). Remote manage-
ment is available through Telnet or SNMP
using management VLANs. ADTRAN’s Total
Access EMS, a comprehensive management
platform for the Total Access product line, also
can be used to manage the Total Access 5000
and the Switch Module.
