Background – Industrial Symbiosis

• Industrial symbiosis - an association between two or more industrial facilities or companies in which the wastes or byproducts of one become the raw materials for another

Waste is now considered as a useful resource and is tradable

Industrial symbiosis (IS)

• is a resource efficiency approach, whereby

• There is productive use for unused or residual resources (e.g. materials, energy, water, infrastructure & assets, logistics and expertise) of one company by another

- This synergy is a win-win situation between companies

- Results in mutual economic, social and/or environmental benefits

= is now a recognised approach to green growth and a circular economy

Background – Industrial Symbiosis

Industrial Symbiosis in the World

• Kalundborg Symbiosis is the world’s first well-functioning example of industrial symbiosis

• Companies implemented symbiotic practices

• today there are more than 30 exchanges of water, energy and other by-products

Industrial Symbiosis is already happening in Mauritius!

• Conversion of fish waste into omega oil and pet food.

• Wood wastes recycled with HDPE plastics to make pallets.

• Wood wastes collected to make wood chippings.

• Scrap paper mixed with a polymer to make artisanal jewellery.

• Conversion of paper and wood wastes as animal bedding material.

The Project Brief TITLE: Enhancing resource productivity and environmental

performance of MSMEs in 6 African countries through the concept of industrial symbiosis (IS)

Being implemented in six countries: Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, Burkina Faso, South Africa and Mauritius

Main Grantee for the Project – African Round Table for Sustainable Consumption & Production (ARSCP) in Tanzania

Partner in Mauritius for implementation – Solid Waste Management Division

Aim : •to support African countries in their transition to an Inclusive Green Economy

•in promoting a shift to more sustainable consumption and production (SCP) practices and patterns & Integrated Waste Management

The Project in Mauritius

Objective - The main objective of the project in Mauritius is the greening of businesses in the Manufacturing Sector,

•with focus on cleaner production and •sustainable waste management through Industrial Symbiosis, as an innovative waste management tool

NB: Definition of MSMEs as per EU - an annual turnover not exceeding 50 million euro,

Project Duration: Jan 2016 – June 2018 Budget: A budget of around USD 230,000 is allocated for the project, of which:

80% Grant from the European Union 20% is local contribution

Main Phases of the Project

Overview of Project - Main Phases of Project

1. Capacity Building: Through the hosting of 5 workshops (each of batches of 20 orgs.) so as to train at least 100 MSMEs on cleaner production and Industrial Symbiosis

2. Implementation: Trained companies showing potential will be given on-site support for implementation of the project (20 companies per year) ; and

3. Evaluation: The performances of the companies will ultimately be analysed and evaluated. (20 companies per year)

4. Development of Network Hub in the Region: Aim of the hub would be to enable development of IS activities across the region.

5. Development of Industrial Symbiosis Toolkit: Based on success of project, a toolkit will be developed to foster promotion of actions in various enterprises and provide avenues for up-scaling and replication of best practices

6. Award Scheme to recognize MSMEs: MSMEs having achieved superior results will be recognized

impact geographically as Mauritius is a small island. But

some Industrial Zones may be targeted in future training

• Companies are advised on the data collection and then to report accordingly.

• Once data on “haves” and “wants” is available:

Technical support is given to companies to divert waste and form linkages with recycling companies or others

Once the waste has been diverted, the company should monitor the progress.

Technical support is also given to companies for the monitoring process.

Companies are also given support for cleaner production techniques if possible
