Innovation, design and creativity

worldwide. For many decades, Swiss companies have demonstrated that they possess this quality, be it in the watch-making or the engineering in-dustry, on international financial mar-kets or in Swiss products, from coffee capsules to chocolate. „Nous“ is the result of an outstanding education system, curiosity, open-mindedness and a sense of quality. However this unique competitive advantage needs to be nurtured.

The Swiss Innovation Forum on 20 No-vember 2014 at the Congress Centre Basel will provide a unique innovation platform. It will feature international keynote speakers, lateral thinkers, ex-citing workshops and information on the latest achievements in the sector. This is an opportunity to network with around 1000 leading businessmen, scientists, educators and politicians. So come along and be inspired.

We look forward to seeing you there! Kind regards

Stefan Linder Peter Stähli

Entrepreneurs and CEOsSwiss Innovation Forum

Dear Participants,

The race to come up with new ideas is unrelenting, fast-paced and glob-al in scale. A competitive advantage gained over decades can be squan-dered in only a few years, as the ex-amples of BlackBerry, Nokia and Kodak clearly demonstrate. To be suc-cessful over the long term, it is essen-tial to keep coming up with new ideas, which in turn can be used to develop innovative products and services. As entrepreneurs, we have to be ahead of our time and make sure we don‘t miss the boat.

In Switzerland in particular, a small country without mineral deposits, gold mines or sources of crude oil, innovation is a decisive advantage. It takes „nous“ to create a product or service that meets a need on the mar-ket, is successful internationally and can stand out against its competitors

Johann N. Schneider-AmmannFederal Councillor and Head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education & Research (WBF)

Future innovation policy “Innovation” is the buzzword of the mod-ern business world. But it’s a concept that’s hard to pin down. Especially for the state. However everyone agrees that innovation isn’t created by officials, but by individu-als. The state’s primary role is to create the best possible conditions. Neverthe-less its remit goes beyond supporting research and CTI projects. Other key fac-tors in generating an innovation-friendly climate include location promotion in the widest possible sense, fiscal policy, infra-structure planning and securing an open economy. What does such a comprehen-sive innovation policy look like today and what will it look like in the future? Where does the state’s role begin and end? Eco-nomic Affairs, Education & Research Min-ister Johann N. Schneider- Ammann will address these issues.

About Johann N. Schneider-AmmannJohann N. Schneider-Ammann studied electrical engineering at the Swiss Fed-eral Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zu-rich. In the course of his professional ca-reer he has been, amongst other things, the president and delegate of the Am-mann Group. After spending 11 years in the Swiss National Council he was elect-ed to the Federal Council.

Dr David Bosshart CEO Gottlieb Duttweiler Institute

The new coolHow will the ecosystem of products and services change in the years ahead? What will be “cool” in a world in which insecu-rity and conflicts are rapidly increasing? During the boom years of the Cold War and right up until the 1970s, the concept of “Vorsprung durch Technik” (advantag-es through technology) predominated. Innovation was a positive side-effect of a powerful industry determined to outma-noeuvre its “ideological enemy”. Then things changed. Innovation was sought by expanding the welfare state, through consumption and in the financial markets. And now through digitisation. However, its business models have shown us one thing: more and more of what is developing has less and less to do with what came before. Futurologist David Bosshart’s speech ad-dresses this issue and asks what kind of innovation we will need in order to meet the challenges that lie ahead.

About David BosshartDavid Bosshart has been the CEO of the Gottlieb Duttweiler Institute, a think-tank, since 1999. His research focusses on me-ga-trends in the economy and society, the future of consumerism, globalisation and political philosophy as well as man-agement and change.

Mathematical advantagesSean Gurley studies the nature of innova-tion. He explores how people use a vari-ety of data every day to make decisions and solve problems. In his speech, the New Zealand-born US resident will show how large data-volumes have shaped the global technological landscape in recent years. He will also look at tactics that en-able complex data volumes to be used in corporate decision-making. The analysis of “big data” is also playing an increas-ingly important role in resolving the con-flicts associated with modern-day wars. But what does this predictability mean? What happens to free will if even the way in which someone is killed in war can be calculated using a mathematical formula?

About Sean GourleyGraduate physicist Sean Gourley founded Quid, one of the most innovative and fast-est-growing companies in Silicon Valley, in 2010. The start-up develops software that can be used to provide answers to and the behavioural patterns associated with customers, political protest, high-fre-quency trading and wars.

Professor Patrick AebischerPresident EPFL

Building on traditionsThe terms “innovation” and “tradition” are often treated as polar opposites. Pat-rick Aebischer thinks otherwise. He be-lieves that typical Swiss activities and the associated know-how are fertile ground on which to grow true innovation for our society. The important thing is to antici-pate change, he says. As such, the EPFL founded a life sciences faculty back in 2003 to study what it is known as “bio-engineering”. This enabled important biological and technological research to be carried out early on and qualified ex-perts to be trained. At the SIF 2014, Pat-rick Aebischer will explain how univer-sities can use typical Swiss know-how to promote innovation and technology. About Patrick AebischerFor the past 14 years, Patrick Aebischer has been the president of the EPFL, where he also conducts research at the Brain Mind Institute. Before that he was a university lecturer in the United States and at the Centre Hospitalier Universi-taire Vaudois. Aebischer has also found-ed three biotech start-ups.

Innovation through changeWhen Eddie Obeng switched from a fixed-line telephone to a wireless one, he sat down on the sofa to make his first mobile phone call. Rather than walking to and fro around his apartment, he did the same thing he had done for dec-ades. “When the time came to be inno-vative, I missed my opportunity to do things differently,” the renowned business strategist explains. Because the world is changing at a faster rate than we can learn, Obeng says we should use practi-cal and simple-to-use tools coupled with “smart failure”. But how can we break out of our accustomed behavioural patterns? How can leaders and decision-makers ensure they don’t miss out on innovation? In answering these and other questions, the Englishman will give SIF 2014 partic-ipants pointers for how they can success-fully surf the innovation wave.

Dr Richard FloridaLeading creativity expert | Best-selling author

The culture of creativityFor many years, creativity and innovation have often been mentioned together. So too does Richard Florida, who equates innovative ideas with creative output, de-veloping the theory of the “creative class” several decades back. According to this, creative people in our society and the innovative ideas they come up with are decisive factors in our economic growth. Florida says everyone has a creative po-tential. To tap that potential we must also live in a system that promotes creativity and provides the means to develop new ideas. He says members of the “creative class” can be found wherever people work. At the SIF 2014, he will show par-ticipants how entrepreneurs and leaders can guide creativity within their teams. This will focus on strategies and initiatives that motivate and inspire creative people.

About Richard FloridaRichard Florida is an economist and the developer of the theory of the “creative class”. He teaches at the Universities of Toronto and New York. He is an urban studies theorist and the author of several best-selling books.

BionicKangarooEnergy-efficient jump kinematics based on a natural model

A team of developers from Festo‘s Bionic Learning Network spent the best part of two years reproducing the way real kangaroos hop and learning from the experi-ence. The BionicKangaroo now accurately mimics what makes actual kangaroos so unique. Just like the real-life animal that it is modelled on, the BionicKangaroo can recover energy while jumping, store and then re-utilise it for the next hop. Pneu-matic and electrical propulsion technologies are combined in intelligent fashion to produce a highly dynamic system. A consistently light structure helps the BionicK-angaroo perform this unique jump. The entire system is controlled using gestures. Particular attention was paid to the mobile power pack for this artificial kangaroo. This enables the 7kg, almost 1m tall BionicKangaroo to leap up to 40cm high and 80cm forwards.

Comparing innovationThe conditions for creating a start-up aren‘t the same the world over. The same applies to the challenges that en-trepreneurs and their innovations face in different countries. At the SIF 2014, four start-ups from Brazil, the US, China and Switzerland will be giving elevator pitches of their ideas and innovations in the field of „creativity and design“. Their short presentations will show how they are innovating and using in-novation in their countries and what support they got from official sources when founding their companies.

Eddie ObengEducator | Entrepreneur | Author

Everyone loves innovation. But there’s relatively little innovation in many companies and organisations around the world. British management guru Eddie Obeng doesn’t think that’s because of a lack of creativity by employees. Rather he believes that even the smallest sparks of new ideas are immediately extinguished. Who’s to blame for that? And why does it happen? In an interac-tive workshop, Eddie Obeng will look at the different innovation risks that can occur in companies. In practical and simple fash-ion, he will then show what entrepreneurs can do to encourage these sparks of innovation to reignite.

Best-case session 2Two companies, two success stories

Additively AG

From 2015 onwards, 3D-printed injection nozzles will be built into the airplane engines made by General Electric. This is one of many examples that shows how 3D printing has become a production technology, thus changing manufacturing fundamentally.

In future it is hoped that instead of relying on mass-produced goods from Asia, manu-facturers will be able to make individualised products on demand at on-site 3D print-ing plants. The ETH spin-off Additively is developing a platform that coordinates these new, decentralised production networks.

In the first part of this best-case session, you’ll discover what changes 3D printing is heralding and how it can help make your company stand out.

Matthias BaldingerCo-founder and CEO Additively AG

In his PhD thesis for the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, Matthias Baldinger explored how companies successfully use 3D printers. The spin-off Additively grew out of his research. Before moving to the ETH, the business studies graduate was a management consultant for Accenture, special-ising in operations management.

tibits ag

With a name derived from the English term “titbit”, meaning “tasty morsel”, Tibits pro-vides delicious, fresh and health food and drink. The idea first arose in 1998 within the framework of a business-plan competition in which brothers Christian, Daniel and Reto Frei won two awards for their business plan for vegetarian fast-food restaurants. Restau-rateur Rolf Holtl heard about the project in the media and contacted the Frei brothers. Shortly thereafter they founded Tibits together.

The success story that began as a start-up in Seefeld, Zurich back in the year 2000 now employs some 350 people at eight restaurants in Berne, Basel, Lucerne, Zurich, Winter-thur and for the last few years also in London.

In the second part of this best-case session you’ll find out more about the history of the Frei brother’s success.

Daniel FreiCEO tibits ag

Daniel Frei was born in Barcelona and grew up in eastern Swit-zerland. He studied business at the University of St. Gallen, ma-joring in the management of social processes. In the year 2000, he founded the start-up Tibits together with his brothers and restaurateur Rolf Hiltl.
