Swirling Problems of Immigration in European Countries
Recent news show that European countries have been struggling with the massive
influx of immigrants. The biggest newspaper in the country, Kompas, even put an image of
a kid trying to crawl underneath an iron fence as a soldier trying to kick her out so that she
doesn’t get in. That image was put as a front cover of the newspaper three days ago. The
world also pays attention to European Countries and the massive waves of immigrants from
Syria that they have been facing. Some European countries welcomed these immigrants as
they are classified as refugees that face prosecutions in their countries. The refugees status
allows them to be legal immigrants. Meanwhile, some other countries do not treat believe
those immigrants are entitled to be refugees.
Where did these immigrants come from and what caused them to flight to Europe?
To make a long story short, those immigrants ran away from their country from the ruthless
of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). ISIS is currently ruling the parts of the Middle
East states including Syria, where most of refugees came from. In order to flee from the
brutality of ISIS, those people chose to leave their homeland for Europe. There are hundreds
of thousands of people that decide to do so in this circumstances.
If you open the map of Europe, you can see that there are several ways to get to
Europe from Syria: by land or sea. Either way, these refugees are facilitated by smugglers to
get to the European land. Now the first problem here is that there are smugglers that
decided to make some money from these immigrants by illegal procedures. These illegal
procedures that obviously doesn’t have a standard safety procedures has taken hundreds of
life already and still counting. As for those left, they were struggling to survive until they
reach the European land. There are three most commonly where the refugee by sea would
turn up, in Greece, Italy, or Hungary as they were the countries that has Mediterranean sea
as their borders.
Among the countries that disagree to accept them are Hungary. Hungary sees these
refugees as those that aren’t refugees at all as they were thought to be those who live in the
coast side of Suriah or perhaps from another country in the middle east. Plus, they wanted
these immigrants to enter the country properly with visas and passports while probably most
of them doesn’t have anything of that sort. Due to that, Hungary decided to build the iron
fence where the kid’s photo was taken. The fence was build to prevent these immigrants to
get in the country illegally without official papers while the immigrants claimed that they’re
only passing by Hungary to get to Germany where they welcome the refugees. If we take a
look back in 1951, an agreement was signed by most of the European Countries that
includes Germany and Hungary, about Refugee Protection that all those that signed must
accept Refugees that seeks for better living due to the conflicts in their origin country. They
were ready that time, but for the incoming hundreds and thousands of refugees?
Second problem that occurs was that there are still phobias around Europe regarding
to Muslims. Due to the bombing in London and the riot in France a while ago, the way of
European sees Muslims are mostly negative, especially with ISIS freaking the world out
already from far. So these phobias somehow became a stereotype that leads to racism
towards the Muslims that are mostly what the Refugees consist of. And with these Refugees
coming in big numbers, a big protests towards them aren’t a surprise at all as to they are
afraid that conflicts would begin from them for the country.
So those are some of the highlights of the problem that swirls regarding to the
immigration in European Country. One thing for sure, as humans we have to help each other
in any way we can. And all these immigrants want was to find a place they can call ‘home’
after their original home was turned down to ashes by the conflicts in their country that they
have no idea what purpose would it do to the world. And everyone deserves a place they can
call ‘home’ no matter what they believed in, their skin color, or the language they spoke.
