I am delighted to welcome you to the ninth Nationwide Swindon Half Marathon.

We have a reputation for providing one of the region’s best organised events and we hope your experience of race day is on a par with the positive feedback we have received from thousands of runners over the years.

There are many companies who have made today’s event possible, not least Nationwide whose continued sponsorship and support is essential to the running of the event.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Schweppes, Powerade, Mercedes Benz of Swindon Tesco, our media partners and all our other sponsors for helping to make the day a huge success. Our volunteers also deserve a special mention for maintaining the safety of the runners and spectators along the courses.

Each year this event provides a valuable source

of income for a wide variety of local charities whose work makes a big difference in our community so we would urge you to support one of our associated charities through sponsorship.

The half marathon continues to go from strength to strength thanks to the hard work that goes on behind the scenes by our leisure services team and I would once again like to thank them for their efforts.

I would like to wish everyone taking part the best of luck whether you are running the 13.1 mile route or the shorter courses and I look forward to joining you on the start line.

Cllr. Keith WilliamsCabinet Member for Leisure and Strategic Transport

The Sandy Martin Fancy Dress Competition Trophy

To capture Sandy’s love of the fun element of the half marathon we will be on the look out for the runner wearing the most original, imaginative or funny fancy dress costume. The competition will run across all three races with the winner awarded the BBC Sandy Martin Fancy Dress Trophy.

Competition Criteria

Representatives from Swindon Borough Council (SBC) and BBC Wiltshire will choose their favourite fancy dress from all the entries which, in their opinion, display the most original, imaginative or funny costume, from which the judge, whose identity shall be announced on race day, will then, at their sole discretion, choose the prize winner. The winner may be required to take part in publicity.

The competition is open to all entrants of the Nationwide Swindon Half Marathon, 5-mile Multi-terrain and 2-mile Family Fun Run except for employees and their immediate families of SBC and BBC Wiltshire.

In the event of any dispute regarding these terms and conditions, or the rules, conduct, results and all other matters relating to the competition, the decision of the SBC organising team shall be final and no correspondence or discussion shall be entered into.

A Fond FarewellIn December 2011 Roger Byrne, Head of Leisure at Swindon Borough Council, passed away following a short illness. We would like to pay tribute to his life and contribution to leisure in Swindon over the past 23 years.

The son of the late Roger Byrne, Captain of the ‘Busby Babes’, Roger’s greatest lifelong passion was unquestionably Manchester United Football Club. He was quietly but intensely proud of his late father’s achievements there.

Roger came to Swindon in 1988, initially as Deputy Manager at The Oasis Leisure Centre, then Centre Manager at The Link and Delta Tennis Centre and latterly as Head of Leisure, in which role he was instrumental in bringing the Olympic torch to Swindon earlier this year.

It would take too long to list all of Roger’s contributions to leisure in Swindon but suffice to say that people in the borough will have benefited from his work, his strategies and his management without knowing it. Roger was a people person, a great communicator and an imaginative problem-solver and gifted innovator.

Roger loved sport, from cycling to running, skiing to suba-diving - he would try them all. He ran four

marathons in his lifetime, including the London Marathon, all for charities close to his heart. He was especially proud of the Swindon Half Marathon. He was a member of the board and also a sector marshal on race day. He, along with his wife Gill and members of their family, kept Sector 3 running smoothly.

Few words can express how much he is missed. Perhaps all we really need to say in tribute to Roger is that all our lives have been richer for knowing him, and for all of us the world is a poorer place without him.

Until January of this year I had done relatively little running, instead preferring mountain biking, tennis and football. That all changed when I attended last year’s Nationwide Swindon Half Marathon. I was struck by the range of people who entered the race, which included people of all ages and fitness levels. My interest was awakened and after some peer and media pressure, I decided to enter. Training started on the treadmill but soon graduated to the open road, after investing in a decent pair of trainers. Initially, I was running for around 3 miles and later increased this to weekend runs of about 10 miles and 5 miles every other day during the week. After successfully completing the Chiseldon 5-mile race I felt fit for anything – possibly even being able to run 13.1miles in the not too distant future. But it soon became clear that running was the easy part and avoiding injury was the tricky bit.

A few months ago I damaged my Achilles tendon – a problem which I put down to insufficient stretching beforehand. After a brief period of enforced rest, I was glad get back to my full training schedule. Unfortunately another setback was in store – tendons in both legs started giving me trouble and I had to stop running altogether. I am currently having physiotherapy and maintaining my level of fitness with off-road cycling. Needless to say I will still be taking part, even if it means walking the course. Being an optimist, I hope to have fully recovered and am committed to a target time of finishing in under two hours. Preparing for this challenge has really made me realise just how fulfilling, and at times frustrating, training for a half marathon can be. Whether I walk or run on the big day, I certainly won’t be giving up in the long-run!

Race Numbers

14

Race numbers must be displayed vertically on the front of running tops and not folded. All runners are required to complete the medical details on the back of the race number prior to pinning it to their vest.

Anyone with an existing medical problem that might require special attention, e.g. epilepsy, diabetes, history of heart problem, is required to mark a large black cross with a black felt tip pen on the front of their race number. (Black marker pens will be available)

Please ensure you are wearing your own race number and under no circumstances allow someone else to wear your number. Any runner found to be using the number of another entrant will be disqualified.

On-the-day RegistrationOn-the-day registration is available for the 5-mile multi-terrain and the 2-mile family fun run only. Registration will open at 8.00am and will close promptly at 10.30am. Registration will be located at the Nationwide Pavilion and clearly signposted.

Place transfers will not be permitted on race day for any of the three races.

Runners are advised that all dogs and wheeled carriages other than wheelchairs are banned from the race (with the exception of the fun run where wheeled carriages are permitted). Participants in all races must not be accompanied or followed by others on cycles.

Page 15: Swindon Half Marathon Programme 2012

Simply attach the chip to your shoe using the two slim twines provided. It will be detected as the chip passes over the mat located at the finish line. Once you cross the line please keep moving and clear the finish area as soon as possible.

The twist ties provide secure chip attachment and easy release for chip collection after the race. Staff will be on hand to assist or you can do this yourself.

The Sport System timing system will be used for the half marathon and multi-terrain only. The family fun run is not chip timed but there is a timing clock on the finish gantry.

Race ResultsPreliminary race results will be displayed on notice boards in the vicinity of the start/finish. Please see website for up-to-date information.

Schweppes Abbey Well is proud to sponsor the Nationwide Swindon Half Marathon, Multi-terrain

and Fun Run again this year. We would like to wish all participants the very best of luck and hope they enjoy the day. Schweppes Abbey Well Natural Mineral Water is the official water for London 2012. It’s bottled at source in Morpeth, Northumberland. Every drop has been naturally filtered through water bearing white sandstone for at least 3,000 years.

Powerade is proud to be the isotonic drink of choice for the second year running at the Nationwide Swindon Half Marathon event. It helps replenish fluids and minerals you lose when you sweat. Powerade is the sports drink for London 2012 Olympic Games.

We would like to thank Abbey Well and Powerade for sponsoring our event for the second year running.
