Known as a state college within the University System of Georgia, the potential exists for SGSC to offer additionalbaccalaureate degrees in the future.

SGSC is a great place for students to begin their academic journey. The College offers access to the core curriculum for transfer as well as the opportunity to earn a bachelor’s degree at the same tuition rate as an associate’s degree. When combined with the academic and student supportservices that are offered on campus, SGSC is one of the most affordable institutions in Georgia.

Students have the flexibility to live on campus in Douglas or plan their schedules around family and work by utilizing any of SGSC’s convenient locations. The Douglas Campus boasts twomodern residence halls, which provide additional student life programming and all the amenities and comforts of home. A revitalized dining hall and the Clower Student Life Center offer additional social activities. Likewise, the Student Learning Center and the James M. Dye Student Services Building provide a sense of community and fun for students utilizing the Waycross Campus. SGSC also offers over 20 clubs and organizations to provide students with a well-rounded collegiateexperience.

Intercollegiate athletics has a rich heritage in both Douglas and Waycross, drawing athletes from throughout Georgia as well as other states and countries. The athletic program includes baseball, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, women’s soccer, women’s softball, and men’s and women’s swimming. Students may also enjoy intramural sports and individual play onnumerous fields and courts on both campuses. The Douglas Campus features a nine-hole golf course and an indoor junior Olympic-size pool in its Wellness Center complex. The WaycrossCampus has its own array of recreational venues, including two lakes, a paracourse walking trail that meanders through the 150-acre campus, a gymnasium, and tennis courts.

SGSC has a $65.3 million economic impact on its region and partners with economic development officials to strengthen the quality of life in the communities it serves. Both the South Georgia State College Foundation and the James M. Dye Foundation support the College through annual awards of tuition assistance. Funding for campus priorities not covered by the State or through tuition is also provided by the Foundations to strengthen the institution’s academic and economic footprint throughout Georgia.

ATHLETICS at SGSCSouth Georgia State College celebrates the accomplishments of its students during athletic play and in the classroom. The emphasis on making academics a top priority is reflected in the achievements of SGSC’s student athletes. Four SGSC athletic teams (women’s swimming, women’s cross country, women’s soccer, and softball) have been named to the National Junior College Athletic Association’s (NJCAA) list of All-Academic Teams. To qualify for this recognition, each team must obtain a cumulative minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher. Currently, the athletic department competes intercollegiately in baseball, softball, women’s soccer, men’s basketball, swimming, and cross country. Below are some highlights from the 2015-2016 academic year.

SGSC’s men’s and women’s swim teams earned runner-up honors at the NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in Fort Pierce, Fla., in early March. Both the men’s and women’s teams took second place. SGSC swim coach CM Jenkins received the 2016 Women’s Swimming and Diving National Coach of the Year Award.

SGSC’s men’s basketball team punched their ticket to the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) semifinals with an overtime win over South Georgia Tech. In addition to winning their quarterfinal game, the Hawks gave head coach Cory Baldwin his 200th career win in 10 seasons as a NJCAA head coach. For the second year in a row, a SGSC basketball player was named to the NJCAA All-American Team. Tyrone Sam, a 6’6” sophomore from Roswell, Ga., was a second team selection. He follows former teammate Jovante’ Spivey who was a first team selection during the 2014-2015 season.

SGSC’s finished second in the GCAA Region Tournament and advanced to play in the NJCAA Division I Baseball East Central District Tournament. The following players were selected for postseason recognition: first team All-GCAA: Cameron Coffey and Cayden Hatcher; second team All-GCAA: Mikal Flores; All-Tournament Team: Chase Hinson, Zack Rafuse, and Jacob Schmidt; Gold Glove Team: Hinson.

Spring 2016 was quite a season for the sophomore players on SGSC’s women’s softball team. The Lady Hawks entered the GCAA Tournament as the top seed and regular season champions. Members of the Lady Hawks named to the GCAA All-Region first team are Samantha Hays (pitcher), Chelsea Lyons (outfield), Whitney Oliver (pitcher), and Megan Farmer (infield). Those named to the GCAA All-Region second team are Kimberly Gentry (pitcher), Summer Lee (infield), and Halie Pearce (outfield). Farmer, Lee, and Oliver were named to the GCAA 2016 All-Tournament Team.
