SCOTT CHATTERTON Organ-nic

‘Organ-nic’. A multimedia presentation that takes the form of an electroacoustic composition made entirely from the sound created by fruit as it begins its journey in soil to how it is ultimately consumed.Melodies and rhythms will be perceived from the natural and processed that are integral part of the ‘Music’.

‘Organ-nic’ draws influences from various electroacoustic artists such as Mathew Herbert and Simon Emmerson but more particularly the works of Coldcut where compositions tones and textures are the result of recorded, acoustic, art of noise.

JACK CHEETHAM Disparities

Disparities, is a three track EP that spans the rhythms and sound worlds of minimal techno, down-tempo, and ever-haunting electronica. The compositions explore the notion of ‘bittersweet’, through an investigation into the harmonic relationships of both melancholy and euphoria, thus ensuring a more nocturnal affair for the listener.

You are invited to interact with Kolektiv Organika’s debut EP in the space in which the material was recorded, mixed and mastered. Disparities draws influence from Bristol based trip hop trio Portishead, Danish maestro Anders Trentemøller, and ambient innovator Brian Eno, as well as resonating with various other artists concerning themselves within similar genres and fields of creative practice.

Jack works for Kolektiv Organika, which is an international musical and visual collective created in 2011 alongside Krzysztof Kryg and Antonia Lewis. The collective’s organic aesthetic consists of a mélange of live instrumentation, synthesized soundscapes and found-sound recordings. The sounds are processed using predominantly analogue hardware, thus remaining in keeping with the organic aesthetic associated with the group.

Jack focuses on promoting European musical culture, whilst encouraging both diversity andinnovation through multi-disciplinary artistic collaboration.

JAMIE CHORLEYVicarious

“vi·car·i·ous” (adj.)“Felt or undergone as if one were taking part in the experience or feelings of another”

Our perceptions of a simple day-to-day life are guided and informed by our senses. These senses allow us to adequately fabricate an image of our surroundings, as well as to inform our sense of self. However, to experience the world through one’s own perspective merely offers a limited and one-dimensional view of our own existence. It can however be argued that such an issue could be remedied by the exploration of the sensory perspective of others. “Vicarious” addresses such a concept and places the listener into the audio sensory perspective of others through the use of binaural recordings.

Jamie Chorley, who founded his own productions company “Jamie Chorley Productions” in 2012, is a Preston based music producer and graphic designer. After receiving the National Diploma in Music Practice in 2010, he commenced his Bachelor Degree in Music Production at the University of Central Lancashire. Originally, specialised in Metal production, he is now exploring various musical genres, such as Ambient and Electronic. This is Chorley’s first exploration into the use of binaural microphone captured sound, leading into new creative outlets.

TIM CROMPTONBOXT

BOXT is a six track EP produced by Tim Crompton working under the pseudonym ‘OtherChannels’. Based in Preston, usually workingwithin genres such as IDM and Electroacoustic music. This EP was produced with a different stylistic approach.

BOXT integrates Hip-Hop with ambient and electronic elements using a combination of lo-fi and hi-fi sounds. Ambient basement recordings are contrasted by groove driven beats, melodic vocals, and saturated tape loops that give BOXT a very characteristic aesthetic. The creative use of a hardware sampler, cassette machine and old tape were the source of achieving a sound that is both unique and interesting.

The EP features guest artists Carl Brown (Foreign Floods) and Elizabeth Vince (Laekyn).

ATANAS DINCHEVMusic of Movement

In recent years we have evolved the tools to not only collect, but to also analyze and a great deal of data from our surroundings.

This new realm of analysis is called “data visualization” and it aids us in understanding vast amounts of information. This audio-visual installation aims to inspire new ways of looking at that information.

Where every person is a potential artist in his ability to create different tools for expression of information. It transforms real time traffic information taken from the London Tube and re-maps it according to a perceptually relevant musical algorithm - creating a living composition device. What would you do with information?

ANDREW FAIRCLOUGH / COLD READER Outsider Techno

Outsider Techno is a very personal work that explores notions of place and identity, and how music both evokes and represents both. Snapshots of a life, in auditory and visual forms are manipulated and de contextualised to create a textural work that documents the current state of an ongoing search for expression.

Utilising field recordings, found sound, organic instrumentation and virtual analogue synthesis, it presents a sound deeply influenced by years of listening to House, Techno and Ambient Electronica.Sounding at once familiar and unique, it’s positioned between the

dancefloor and home listener, and between the abstract and rigid.

It is hoped that presenting in this way will enable an audience not accustomed to listening to what tend to be thought of as experimental techniques, to engage more fully with them, perhaps providing a gatewayto further listening within the “art musics”.

Music from the outside, looking in.

JOE FOSSARDRevolve

The installation explores a changing compositional process using the computerised control of customised musical devices. These have been constructed with various materials from past projects, retaining a strict D.I.Y ethic, including turntables used in warehouse raves, microphones used by established artists and parts of musical instruments that otherwise could have been considered redundant.

This piece is the result of a combination of ideas, materials and influences accumulated throughout his career as a sound engineer since the mid eighties. He has produced albums, composed music and engineered a wide range of live events from live bands in stadiums to experimental sound installation.

ANDREW GLASSFORDOrbis Deos

For thousands of years civilization used mythology and religion to help understand the world we inhabit. Contemporary society is underpinned by science and fundamental rules of physics as we understand it. “Orbis Deos” brings these two discussions together, taking inspiration from Holst’s “Planet Suite” and scientific information from our solar system. Andrew Glassford recreates the planetary system in his second multichannel speaker installation and he continues to explore this medium.

Andrew’s main focus of work entails the recording and producing of music in the folk genre including recent work collaborating with the Susie Jones Band. He has just begun his own producing and recording company working under the name Delta Glass Recordings.

VICTORIA GREAVES If Instruments Could Sing

Victoria is a musician, composer and producer. From the age of seven she has sung in several different choirs including some solo work. When she was a little older, she began learning piano and cornet; also eagerly taking up any opportunity to learn new instruments to expand her music knowledge. Victoria enjoys working with film music and vocal compositions and has been composing for many years.

Here we look at methods that can be used to produce different and unusual sounds by the human voice. Which, when executed efficiently, can sound like a variety of different musical instruments. These mimicked instrumental sounds can be comprised together to produce a vocal acoustic song. Essentially any song, classic or current, can be transformed into an acapella piece by imitating the instruments used with effective voice replicas. ‘If instruments could sing’, shows just what that would sound like.

MICHAEL MAGUIREHome Sweet Music

Michael Maguire presents a musically constructed piece developed from found sound orientated samples captured in a particular audio landscape.

‘The Home’, for many their musical history is developed whilst living at home, and many draw their inspiration from within their own home. The un-noticed sounds within our home are unique for their own right, edited to retain the aesthetic qualities and presented in a musical composition this acousmatic performance is designed to allow a never before realisation of the musical qualities these unique samples withhold.

With a computer based composition of electronic synthesizers and the unique home microphone captured sound, you are invited to indulge in a deeper listening of arcane everyday sounds that would have other wise been unappreciated.

JULIA NEUBAUERFrame-by-Frame An exploration of texture and colour

Frame-by-frame utilizes methods of direct animation with time manipulation techniques, in an audio-visual installation. 16mm film leader was painted with inks & acrylics and scratched, to create a piece capturing unique images exploring texture and colour. The films of Len Lye, Norman McLaren and Jose Antonio Sistiaga, particularly inspired the artist to work in this medium. The audio composition in the installation was developed with the sounds of the film projector and the hand crafted processing techniques. These were recorded and manipulated, to construct an experimental soundscape in surround sound.

Julia Neubauer is an audio-visual artist with a strong interest in non-conventional filmmaking techniques and experimental music production. Previous works such as ‘I am the Beach’, have explored the creative use of found sound, location recording and time manipulation. She is currently working as a freelance producer and composer across Europe.

SAM NOLANRecording Rejection

Recording Rejection is an installation that intentionally exploits a number of conventionally undesirable characteristics inherent in both the audio recording and playback process to create a performance that can only be experienced in full by the audience in physical attendance.

The process of phase cancellation serves as a key element in this installation. Audience members will initially be invited to preview the ongoing performance via a live audio stream captured by a number of microphones located within the exhibition space. The same audience will then be invited to experience the multi-speaker performance in person from within the exhibition space, allowing them to experience elements of the live sound that the microphones are unable to capture.

Sam Nolan is a Suffolk based recording artist specialising in both the sound and technology associated with recordings of the 1970s and 80s. Experimentation with hardware electronic instruments is present in his compositional work and this piece demonstrates that interest for real world processes appropriated for the purposes of an installation.

JORDAN PARTRIDGE Urban Gothic

This piece showcases four of the artist’s original compositions, created to feature in an innovative audio-visual project. Drawing on the discourses of contemporary gothic, this project seeks to provide a lens through which to view beneath the cosmetic, superficiality of a society and culture that has sought to turn away from depression, death and decay. The aim of the piece is to take the listener from a place of familiar surface comfort to the dark corners of modern life, the physical post-industrial wasteland of urban decay that speaks of unemployment, exploitation, decay, and death.

Jordan Partridge is a practising electronic musician performing under the alias ‘Decyfer’. He has several releases on various record labels and has featured on a number of stations, such as BBC Radio 1, XFM (Mary Anne Hobbs), and Rinse.FM, with DJ support from, for example, Groove Armada, Claude VonStroke, Marcus Nasty, and Foamo.

MATTHEW RYDEROnce, In Wonderland...

Welcome! to Mr Mymble’s psychedelic journey through sound. A sonic adventure through varying forms of contemporary, psychedelic music; ‘Once, In Wonderland...’ is a linked series of compositions that draw upon the narrative of Lewis Carroll’s children’s book, ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’, to direct the course of the music. Behind all the silliness and nonsense lies a more serious exploration of sound. The ability to capture and/or generate a sound within an electronic medium opens up vast worlds of potential for the reproduction and enhancement of these frozen moments of time. From the innovative works of Pierre Schaeffer and Musique Conrete, to the studio experimentation of The Beatles to modern day electronic artists, people are seeking to understand sound in this new state and effecting it in such a way that could otherwise never be found within our normally perceived ‘reality’.

These ‘slices of reality’ have become something of an obsession for Mr Mymble and will undoubtedly be the focus of much of his coming future work. Now, if you’d like to come in, be comfortable, we’d love to tell you a tale. Once, in Wonderland...

KAINE SMITHShades of Past

Shades of Past is a thirty five minute album with a full length music video, encompassing the notion of freedom whilst prompting the listener/viewer to perceive long-distance travelling as an enjoyable experience. ‘Shades of Past’ sonically references the ‘road music’ found in the late-1960s and early-1970s with a distinct mix of Rock, Country and Blues. The visual aspect of this project is a video of a 100-mile drive, through the picturesque scenery of England and Wales, which once merged with the soundtrack creates a...

Kaine is a Rock guitarist who has played in Rock and Metal over the past 8 years. On this project, after influence from Tame Impala’s ‘one-man band’ first album, he decided to go for a solo approach, playing all instruments. Kaine was also the driver for the journey of which the footage was taken.

THOMAS STARKIEChair

Thomas Starkie invites the viewer to ‘Chair’, an audio installation that explores the concept of sound as a by-product of another medium. By moving between two spaces, the viewer is encouraged to draw a comparison between the two compositions each played in their own space. The aim is to highlight the sonic differences between the capitalized, monotonous world of mass production and that of creating something hand made.

The recordings for one piece where taken whilst building a chair at home, with no time limit or agenda, these recordings where then arranged and sampled to create a piece with no two parts the same. While the other is a recording from a factory, with minimal compositional factors from the creator, implying we have no control over the products we get from a mass-produced source.

Thomas is a music producer from a recording based background who, throughout his studies has come to appreciate the unique timbres of ‘found sound’ and utilizes them amongst his own compositions for percussive elements.

PHIL THOMSONRefraction

“Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.” Oscar Wilde

An Artist often only shows the confluence of their experiences, loves, admiration and influence. When the fluidity of synthesis detains the volition, what is omitted? Direct music through a prism and identify the refractive quality of musical identity. If each influence was not limited by its cohort or medium, and given its own stage, where would it take its opportunity. This is not an attempt to explain art, rather an exploration of how ideas, moments and limitations come to a resolve.

Phil Thomson is a producer and sound enthusiast with an untamed interest in the social implications of our audio landscape.

MATTHEW WARBURTONA Familiar Evil

Matthew Warburton is a freelance musician and music producer, who over the last couple of years has gained an abundant appreciation for the “Dub” style of production. He is currently working in numerous projects surrounding the genres of Dub, Reggae, Punk and Ska Music.

A Familiar Evil is a chronicling of his influences towards these projects and explores an uncommon avenue of dub production using digital software based processes. It explores the art of the “groove” within music, the use of delay units, heavily driven rhythm and bass sections, as well as subtle melodies to create an undulating soundscape across different and diverse musical styles conveying the narrative with the music as opposed to the vocal line.

A Familiar Evil is a collection of works mixed as an EP containing a mixture of samples, live instruments and synthesis. You are invited to join in and listen on one of the available listening stations. While the length of your participation isn’t determined, it would be appreciated for all to engage with the material.

AARON WILLIAMSIndividuation

“Individuation” invites us to consider the drastic effect that certain aspects of our childhood has upon our emotional and cognitive development, and the holistic benefits that exploring and examining ones former self can present us with.

These ideas are presented to the viewer through examinations of the artist’s own childhood via the use of VHS home films, accompanied by digital manipulation of Phillip Larkin’s poem ‘This Be The Verse’.

Aaron Williams is an artist from the North West of England. His first foray into music was as a small child; blistering his stubby digits on an offensively fashioned half size acoustic guitar, eventually he discovered and was forced to study classical guitar and Jazz. These experiences (amongst others) traumatised the child and led him to reject traditional instrumental approaches, as well as leaving him tragically unable to express himself in anything other than the third person.

HARRY WOODROWWoodwork

Woodwork is an audio installation featuring sounds created using instruments which have been constructed through drawing on a range of influences, from homemade blues instruments to the unique monochord improvisations of Max Eastley. The piece explores a selection of playing techniques, experimenting with the capabilities of the instruments. The sounds have then been recorded and processed in order to create an extended and structured arrangement which gradually builds in texture, mirroring the process of building the instruments. The melodic and harmonic form within the arrangement utilises improvisational techniques, working around the microtonal scales produced by the instruments and the interaction of sounds when layered together. The piece has been created and performed by music producer and instrumentalist, Harry Woodrow, who expands upon his keen interest in sonic art and exploration of innovative sound creation.
