What we studied...

• We studied sweeteners, colours and calories in sweets produced in Estonian factories.

• We also pointed out energy, protein, fat,

carbohydrates per 100 g.

• In Estonia there are allowed 12 synthetic colours in food products. In our presentation these are marked with the star.

• In 1994 the government lowered permissible limits of these colours from 300 mg/kg to 50 mg/kg.

The regulation act of the EU 1333/2008 for food additives and theregulation act of Estonia 81/2010 says: when using colourings E 102,104, 110, 122, 124, 129 in food products there must be a label on thepacket „E-number: may cause unhealthy impact on children´sactiveness and abilities.“

Due to that we payed more attention to these colours in sweets. We alsoused comparing data from 2009. That´s why there is marked a yearbehind a colour used in given product.

There are seven factories in Estonia, which produce differentsweets: candies, marmalade, marzipan, zephyr, halvah, coockiesand waffles. We studied 23 sweets from 4 producers in givenresearch.

The biggest and oldestconfectionery company inEstonia is Kalev ChocolateFactory, which started itsactivities in Tallinn in 1806.

For years, Kalev has been the bestknown and most prestigioustrademark of Estonia.

We found out the following:SweetenersThere are no sweeteners in sweets we studied.

Colours: Till 2010 the confectioners used all food colourings in their products including ones given above.

But since 2010:● The biggest confectioner Kalev replaced colourings with ones which did not need labelling. (E120, E141, E160, E161 )● A confectioner Cautes uses colourings (E104, E 110, E122) which need labelling. In one product we studied there was a label on the packet, in another there wasn´t.● A confectioner Marmiton uses given colourings ( E 104, E122) but there are no labels on the packets.
