About the Couple

Sara and Clayton have recently grown apart in their marriage. They have lost that old spark.

They are coming to Sweet Springs to try to reconnect and develop a better understanding of each other, themselves, and the world around them.

They want to learn how to listen, relax, and give back to the world to find inner peace.

Page 4: Sweet Springs Hotel & Spa

Concept Design Intent

Placing smooth, modern elements with rough, old ones takes a balance. Both elements of the design should be visible without overpowering the other. They need to be equally layered throughout the space. When a network of layers is created it brings together unique cuisines, cultures, relaxations, and new reflections. When new fabrics are introduced into a restored historic building they need to compliment the age and beautyt; it should bring about a sense of weightlessness.

The same ideas can be said for a married couple; balancing two different personalities takes practice and patience. Sara and Clayton have been feeling disconnected from each other and their normal lifestyles. They’re looking for a way to become unified again while developing a better understanding of themselves.

The feeling and emotion of Sweet Springs helps unify the couple and restore their relationship. They begin to see how the contrasting elements work in unison throughout the Hotel and Spa.

When Sara and Clayton walk in they notice the large windows, high ceilings, and antique upholstered chairs.

They immediately feel a sense of luxury and calmness.

The concierge greets them at the front desk and gives them their room key.

The hotel only uses old antique keys. It is a simple way to cut back on electricity. When a guest leaves the main building the front desk will hold onto it for you. This also prevents loss of keys while guests are out.

Solar panels on the roof heat up to 60% of water used inside the main building.

Check-in and reservations are completely paperless. Spa appointments, dinner reservations, and room needs are all organized on the computer. Each guest is given an iPad for the duration of their visit so that they can stay up to date with special events going on throughout the hotel.

Compact fluorescent light bulbs are used in all of the table lamps and hanging chandeliers. They use 75% less energy than incadescent bulbs do and last 10 times longer with a faster return on investment.

Guests can control all of the lights, temperature, etc. through their iPad when it is docked on its station. They can order room service and track how much energy they are using and saving.

Double-paned doors and windows help regulate the HVAC inside the building.

Candles are put on each table at night when the lights are dimmed down to create a soft glow.

Rubber plants help keep your indoor air clean and pure. They are able to scrub significant amounts of harmful gases out of the air, through the everyday processes of photosynthesis. Some pollutants are also absorbed and rendered harmless in the soil.

The hanging lights are glass that were hand-blown on site. The glass was recycled from the hotel’s leftover wine bottles and old window panes of falling structures.

About Me Biography & Resume

I am a graduating interior design student at Virginia Tech about to be thrown into the real world. I was born and raised in Houston, TX but currently live in Baltimore, MD. Moving halfway across the country exposed me to multiple forms of architecture and design. Exploring a new city helped me fall in love with the world around me and understand that design was the major i wanted to spend my life in. Spending a summer in Spain & Portugal in 2011 only expanded my knowledge and passion.

Throughout my 4 years at Virginia Tech I have learned about many different design realms and the codes and details that come with them. I had an internship with Ayers Saint Gross in Baltimore this past summer where I was able to test my knowledge. In school, I have competed in multiple design competitions and worked closely in groups. Last semester, my senior one-week competition group took first and then second place two weeks in a row.

When I graduate I hope to begin working at an architecture firm that specializes in hospitality or commercial design in a big city full of life and culture.
