DESCRIPTION
Summary report, presentations and exercises from SIANI/FAO Workshop: “Discover new Opportunities with the Ex-Ante Carbon Balance Tool” 7-8 December 2011, Stockholm Main workshop objectives: Presenting the tool and spreading its usage Assessing the needs/demand related to CC mitigation for further development of the tool Building partnerships The Ex-Act tool: The tool is a multi-functional software. Ex-Act has the capability to perform, amongst others, Carbon Footprint Analysis, illustrating which agricultural and forestry activities are CO2 emitters or Carbon sinks. The results can be used to measure and manage environmental impact and for communication purposes.TRANSCRIPT

Agricultural and Forestry sector - What are the gaps/needs?
ADAPTATION
• Lack of quantitative data in developing
countries
• Increased synergies and partnerships
MITIGATION
• Lack of easy tools that measures CC
mitigation
• Certain level of incertitude from studies
that measures C sinks and C sources

Round table discussions 1 Your work related to CC mitigation and adaptation
• What is the vision and objective with your sustainability/CSR work and/or work
related to CC mitigation and adaptation?
• In what areas are you particularly active?
• What type of projects do you have related to CC mitigation in the context of agriculture and/or
forestry?
• Is there a connection to CSR/sustainability topics?
• How do you measure your impacts?
• Which type of approach do you use, e.g. life cycle analysis?
• How do you use your results and for what purpose?
• Have you observed positive/negative outcomes from your or in general
sustainability/CSR work?
• How do you link your sustainability work to risks vs. opportunities?

Pro’s & Con’s of the tool Pro’s Con’s
Easy and cost effective to use to get a quick estimation of the mitigation potential
Provides guidance and support in the decision-making process for policy maker and project designers
It is not applicable at MRV level, cannot be directly used to calculate carbon credits
Applicable at a project, value chain and policy level Not correctly suited for value chain analysis
Takes into account Geographic's and time Rough level of uncertainty, especially in developing countries due to lack of data
Takes into account LU and LUC and covers a large part of the agricultural and forestry activities
IPCC Methodology
Used in financial and economic analysis
