SwediSh CompanieS in BhUTan
You are holding in your hands the first ever Sweden-Bhutan Business Guide! We are very happy to present this overview of business relations between our two countries with the clear intention of deepening them even further. We hope that this Business Guide will serve as a helpful tool both for companies already in Bhutan, as well as for companies that are thinking about entering the Bhutanese market.
Sweden and Bhutan are very different, but our economies are complementary and there are a number of things that unite us. Firstly, we are both small constitutional monarchies. Secondly, our natural resources, especially in hydropower and forestry, have been crucial to our development. Thirdly, we both attach a great deal of attention to the environment and sustainable growth.
The Bhutanese economic growth the last couple of years has been impressive and this growth is expected to continue. More and more Swedish tourists and companies alike are discovering all that Bhutan has to offer. We believe that Sweden and Swedish companies, known for their focus on innovation and sustainability, have solutions that could positively contribute to Bhutan’s future economic growth. We therefore hope that this guide will prove helpful in increasing the ties between our two countries.

THE SWEDISH SOCIETY AND ECONOMY
Sweden is consistently ranked as one of the most competitive economies in the world by the World Economic Forum. It is known for its rich natural resources, innovations, high-tech companies and caring society. Freedom of expression, gender equality, a deregulated economy and reformed central government finance combined with an efficient welfare and social security system have contributed to the societal and economic development.
In an international comparison, Swedish is a very open economy - to international trade and investments. Exports account for almost half of Swedish GDP, consisting largely of manufactured goods, such as vehicles, machinery, pharmaceuticals and forest industry products. Trade in services is large and growing, especially in areas of business services, travel and transportation. Asia is an increasingly important export market for Swedish companies, even larger than the North- and South American markets combined. Imports to Sweden from Asia have also grown over the years.
Sweden is among the leading research nations in the world. As an advanced industrial nation, research plays a key role for economic development as well as for society at large. Innovation and co-creation are important for tackling major challenges. Today, Sweden ranks as one of the most innovative countries in the world.
It has a long history of international commitment to pursuing active global cooperation on sustainable development. This has led to Sweden being in the forefront of developing new environmental technologies and sustainable system solutions. This includes renewable energy, green buildings, waste management, air and water treatment, sustainable fuels and battery-driven vehicles. Swedish industries are in particular innovative also when it comes to life science, IT/telecom, automotive industry, mining and pulp and paper.
Sweden is a strong player in the cultural and creative industries. These industries play an increasingly important role in the growth of the Swedish economy and are driving forces for innovation in other sectors of society and industry as well.

SWEDEN – BHUTAN RELATIONS
Sweden and Bhutan have enjoyed excellent relations ever since diplomatic ties were first established in 1985, but interaction between our two countries predates this. Throughout the years, cooperation in different areas has taken place between Bhutan and Sweden. Swedavia, the Swedish Airports Operator, has contributed to the Bhutanese civil aviation plan and Swedfund has given loans to Bhutan Dairy to mention a few. The Swedish ambassador in New Delhi is accredited to Bhutan and the Bhutanese ambassador in Brussels is accredited to Sweden. In addition, Sweden has an Honorary Consulate General in Thimphu.
Bhutan has ample investment opportunities in power generation, infrastructure, forestry and information and communication technologies (ICT) among others. The hydropower production is expected to grow eightfold before 2022. Importantly, investing in Bhutan also provides access to the much larger Indian market through a free trade agreement with India. With more and more tourists finding their way to the beautiful Himalayan kingdom, the tourism industry and especially ecotourism is expected to grow and is one of the government’s key priorities.
The trade flows between Sweden and Bhutan are still at a low level so there is scope for an increase. Sweden mainly exports telecommunication equipment to Bhutan. Quite a few Swedish companies are already active in Bhutan, mainly through distributors or through their operations in India. Swedish expertise in hydropower, infrastructure, forestry and ICT could positively benefit Bhutan’s economic growth. The Swedish companies focus on sustainability and clean technology also goes hand in hand with Bhutan’s ambitions to have a balanced and sustainable growth. Both Sweden and Bhutan have expressed a clear interest and intention to facilitate more trade and investment for the mutual benefit of our two countries.
