About the Programmes

This suite of postgraduate programmes is designed to prepare and develop studentsfor careers in the Human Resource Management (HRM) or Human ResourceDevelopment (HRD) professions. The philosophy of the programme derives from theprinciples of reflective practice and experiential learning, or using the CIPD term, weare developing 'thinking performers'. The programme, therefore, combines academic,professional and personal development.

As a graduate of the PGDip/MA HRM or PGDip/MA HRD you will have gained an in-depthknowledge and understanding of HRM or HRD while placing these disciplines within a widerorganisational and contextual framework. You will be able to understand current issues andthinking along with techniques applicable to research in the subject areas and will haveacquired both theoretical and applied perspectives. This will enable you to apply a range ofspecialist skills to the organisations in which you as an HRM or HRD specialist are likely tooperate.

PGDip/MA Human Resource Management The course is designed for people who are interested in advanced level study in generalhuman resource management - whether they are working in HR roles within organisationsor employed as external consultants.

PGDip/MA Human Resource Development The course is designed for people who are interested in advanced level study and indeveloping employees, managers, leaders and organisations - whether they are working inHRD roles within organisations or employed as external consultants.

Programme Structures

Swansea Business Schooland the CIPDSwansea Business School has strong links with theChartered Institute of Personnel and Development,and has been offering CIPD professional qualificationsfor many years.

These Master’s programmes have been designed tobuild on the professional qualifications framework ofthe CIPD and offer a higher level qualification for thosewithin the profession who are seeking furtherprofessional development and career opportunities.

The Business School runs an annual programme ofevents in collaboration with the CIPD and students onthis programme will benefit from access to theseextra-curricular opportunities throughout their studies.

Exemptions for holders of CIPD postgraduatequalifications

Holders of CIPD postgraduate qualifications may beoffered exemption from a significant proportion of theMA programme enabling them to ‘top-up’ to aMaster’s degree in a shorter time than the full MAprogramme.

How you are TaughtThe programme is taught via a communityof learning and so interactive seminars, casestudies, group discussions, and practicaltasks are built into the teaching timetable toensure that all students are able to sharetheir experiences and learn from their peersas well as the expertise of the highlyexperienced teaching team.

You will find a positive, supportive andfriendly environment in our small-groupteaching and learning environments, andyou will be supported and encouraged infinding opportunities to develop your careerfurther through work experience and liveprojects.

How you are AssessedAssessments on the programme takevarious forms including, for example, theuse of case study assignments,examinations, research reports, reflectivestatements or practical presentations andthe MA dissertation for those completingpart two.

Learning Facilities and Student SupportThe Faculty of Business and Managementat Swansea Met has been extremelysuccessful in recent years and the Universityhas invested £4 million pounds in a newdedicated campus for the Business School.You will experience studying for yourMaster’s in an exciting new building withimproved facilities and surrounded by afantastic new learning environment.

You will have access to the new catering,social learning and library facilities andimproved, dedicated computing facilities,with free Wifi and docking areas forlaptops/tablets as well as PCs for you touse.

You will also have access to an excellentrange of learning resources including theVirtual Learning Environment, and additionalweb-based library resources.

The new campus is situated very nearSwansea’s train station and bus networkand in easy reach of studentaccommodation.

Entry Requirements You should normally hold one or more of thefollowing: • An honours degree or postgraduate

qualification e.g. BA, MSc. • A relevant professional qualification e.g.

CIPD Intermediate Certificate or Diploma, ACCA, CIM, ILM.

Normally, all prospective students will attenda formal interview.

International students for whom English isnot a first language will be requested toprovide evidence of sufficient command ofspoken and written English to meet thedemands of the programme in accordancewith the University requirements, normally atleast IELTS at 6.0.
