THE NEWSLETTER FOR MEMBERS OF THE SWAN YACHT CLUB
THE CYGNUS DECEMBER 2016
SWAN YACHT CLUB SINCE 1904
RIVERSIDE ROAD EAST FREMANTLE
.
Dear Member’s,
Building works continue at a steady pace and I feel members and guests will now be able to appreciate what
an outstanding and unique club house design we will all be able to enjoy.
The start of works at the front of the clubhouse has not been without issue. Undiscovered septic tanks and
discarded dumps of concrete has caused some concern along with the fact that the section of the clubhouse
needed to be replaced due to aging brick work and a lack of engineered support.
The slip and jetty power supply had to be replaced as the cable run was directly in line of the new concrete
piling.
Thankfully members have been very supportive and understanding of the logistical issues that occur when
undertaking such a major undertaking.
Social membership continues to grow steadily and the interruptions have been stifled by the ability of the club
to host a number of outstanding events, membership and community engagement activities.
The top bar will be open for Friday night’s Big Band and Swing night, subject to a standard council health
inspection.
The car park will also return to some normality with civil works coming to an end shortly.
The first official club function on the top deck was my Commodores Cocktail Party. It was well attended and
enjoyed on a balmy night with dance, music and fantastic canapé's from Chef Noe’s repertoire.
Special thanks to VILLA KULA who sponsored the event with outstanding furniture. The quality and design
was outstanding.
Last weekend’s Open/Opening Day was very well patronised by members, guests and dignitaries who were
impressed with the friendly and inclusive atmosphere of our great club.
The Christmas theme Sail Past was well supported by 43 club members’ vessels.
Thanks to Ken McGuire , Ian Harwood and Chris Pinfold for the use of their boats for our VIP guests
Tim and Michelle Howards new boat has been christened with the Mike Williams Sail Past Perpetual trophy
(again)
Thanks go to the staff and galley for coping with the big demand at our club in these trying times.
Have a safe and happy Christmas and New Year.
Regards
Kevin Bielby

SWAN YACHT CLUB SINCE 1904
RIVERSIDE ROAD EAST FREMANTLE
With the onset of warmer weather, outstanding numbers from members of the public continue to take up the
option of Social membership. The weekends are a buzz with plenty of families and friends enjoying the new
facility, offers and entertainment.
Encourage your guests to join up and be part of something special.
The Swan Yacht Club is a club that gives members and locals access to an involved boating community and
the social benefits of a “river-side lifestyle”.
Around the club
Staffing
I would like to officially welcome aboard Peter Clarkson who joins the team as Food and Beverage
Supervisor. I’m sure some of you may have already been introduced to Peter who will be aiming at quality
and attention to detail when thinking food/ beverage.
Major Raffle
Members will have now received their raffle tickets going into the draw to win the Suzuki Baleno plus other
great prizes.
This prize pool is provided with the support of club sponsors.
Refer to the website for the full list of club sponsors and consider their services when next in the market.
Don’t forget to book!
Members are reminded to book with reception if they are coming down for dinner. Booking a reservation
assists with catering and minimizes any potential lengthy delays.
At the same time tables will only be reserved for a maximum of 15 minutes past the reservation time unless
the club is advised of any reasonable delay.
Events
Commodore, Kevin Bielby referred to in his report the support offered by Villa Kula ‘Architects of
extraordinary design’ at the Commodores Cocktail Party.
The furniture design and presentation was brilliant and provided guests with a sneak peak of what the club can
offer into the future.

If you are serious about giving your next event that ‘wow factor’ I strongly recommend contacting the crew at
Villa Kula.
The Commodores Cocktail Party, followed by Open/ Opening Day were both provided with great weather,
celebrations and ceremony
Well done to the members who participated in the Sail Past and made the day an outstanding success.

Habitat Garden Party Cultural Event
The recent Habitat Garden Party was an outstanding event and a credit to all involved who managed the 800
strong crowd without incident.
The event was a clear indication of the club capability to host large scale financially viable events.
Thank you to the members who offered their support during the clean up the following day and to those
members who attended the event.
The crowd well contained enjoying an outstanding event
Let’s not forget the ladies! Marian and her team hosted the annual ladies luncheon where 130 ladies enjoyed
an exciting menu, fashion parades and Christmas celebration.
Check out the clubs Facebook site for the full set of Garden Party and Commodores Cocktail Party photos.
Marina
The marina currently sits at capacity with a number of members patiently waiting an opportunity on the Pen
Wait list.
With a large number of vessels for sale it is expected some will be offered the opportunity to move in and
enjoy the facility in the not too distant future.
Trailer boat parking bollards have now been installed. Please ensure if you are using the trailer bays to re-
engage and lock the padlock at the completion of use. Frustratingly, members have left the bollards down and
taken with them the padlock!

Building
Members may have noted the Notice of Borrowing listed in the local Fremantle papers over the weekend.
The club has applied for a Self-Supporting Loan at a fixed interest rate. The building project is on track and is
anticipated to be finished around May 2017.
There have been issues with the DEFES and the lack of water pressure to the site which have caused some
overruns.
Whilst the club can afford to absorb these changes at this moment, it does not leave us with a level of reserve
in the bank for emergency works e.g. matters related to the marina if required.
Hence we have decided to take out a low interest cash loan from the local council that will give us a reserve.
In the event that we do not need to dip into this additional funding, then we will leave it and roll it into a term
deposit at a favourable interest rate.
Stage 2 of the building works is well underway, matters related to the car park should shortly be behind us and
the trades are full steam ahead concentrating on completing the civil works in an effort to minimise the time
the club has to manage temporary systems.
The opening of upstairs is imminent with members Xmas functions filling the space well in advance.
Stage 2 outside toilets preparation
The kitchen crew has done an outstanding job managing a revised kitchen space to cater for the influx of
members looking to enjoy the new facility in particular over the weekends. Well done to Noe and his team!
In summary, the club is trading profitably whilst still under major construction and the club will continue to
roll out exciting new initiatives and offers in the coming months.
I look forward to seeing you all down at the Swan

Dear Members
Well it’s Christmas time again and with that the start of the summer season.
Our newly renovated alfresco and balcony are bringing throngs of members and friends out of winter
hibernation and back to the club. With live music proving to be extremely popular both on Friday nights and
Sunday afternoons.
Our recent Commodore’s Cocktail Party held upstairs under the stars and on the new deck was an outstanding
success with visiting Commodores from other clubs gracing us with their presence along with the Town of
East Fremantle Mayor Mr Jim O’Niell and his wife Suzanne, Deputy Mayor Mr Michael McPhail, Councillor
Steve Ford and Councillor Lisa O’Malley were among the other attendees that enjoyed this star studded event.
Not one to missed next year members.
Opening Day was no less popular with more than 40 vessels taking part in this years sail past. This year’s
winner making it a hatrick was Tim & Michelle Howard with Tim and Deb Gray, along with their family
members. Magnificent effort guys. Well done.
Coming in at a close second was the team of Keith and Julie Moullin, John Wylie along with Garry Barker
and Di Schoch and also Peter and Jo Robbins.
Congratulations to all that entered this spectacular event and a special thanks to those that dressed up their
boats for the occasion. Great effort.
Well that’s it for me for another year, as I bid you all a very happy and safe Christmas and hope to see
everyone at our New Years Eve extravaganza.
Fair winds and smooth seas my friends till next year.

Vice Commodore
Greetings Fellow Members,
For those of you who missed out, the Opening Day on the 4th December was a wonderful day had by all.
Congratulations to Tim and Michelle Howard on their efforts in the Sail Past.
The Mooring Committee will again be reviewing the pen ropes, weights and chains in the coming weeks. This
may mean that the Mooring Committee representative will need to board your boat in order to check on the
ropes and weights at the back piles. They will do their best to leave your boat as they found it, but please
accommodate them to assist with this effort as best you can. If your boat is away, the Mooring Committee
representative may use the club boat – the Dave Birchenough, to gain access to the back piles. So please
ensure that your ropes, chains and weights are in good order and sized correctly in accordance with the
Constitution Appendices. (these can be found on the club web site). Any non-compliances noted will be
identified in writing to the member who will have 2 weeks to resolve.

Over this Christmas break, if you are planning on being away for more than 2 consecutive weeks, please
notify the office, as we have a number of boats currently requiring temporary pens.
We are in the midst of planning a date for the next busy bee. You may have noted that we haven’t has one in
the lead up to Christmas this year due to the construction works. It is intended that we will have one around or
just before the construction completion so that we might use the busy bee efforts to do any final tidying up
that may be required. The exact date will be published in the new year.
I would like to take the opportunity to wish you all a safe boating season and a Merry Christmas.
Kind regards.
Best Regards

Rear Commodore
Season’s greetings to Members,
Congratulations to all participants in the Club’s Opening Day on Sunday, while most of the sail past vessels
presented with varying array of Christmas decorations, others seemed to be just monkeying around.
Congratulations to Tim and Michelle Howard on their fantastic display of Christmas decorations
The Angling section enjoyed a successful fishing day in the November competition, with Gil Sanders taking
the honours, Dan White second and Ian Hall third on count back. The Angling section seems to be growing
with each event and we encourage all members to join in and wet a line for the final completion in 2016 on
Sunday 18th December. The demersal ban expires on 15th December so we all have great expectations.
The Dragon boaters are enjoying a successful season and are on the lookout for new junior and senior
members, interested members please call Rex Tindall (0414 466 901)
With new sections of the Club renovations coming online prior to Christmas I hope we can all take advantage
of the wonderful alfresco areas during the festive season.
I wish all members a safe and happy boating Christmas and new years.
Season’s greetings.

Ladies Auxilary Report
Hi Everyone,
Another year nearly over, and so much has happened. We’ve survived the renovations, and adapted to the many
changes. Our membership is expanding, and we have now got an amazing, one of a kind club to be enjoyed by
members and the community. We’ve held some spectacular events this year including Melbourne Cup and the
Commodore’s Cocktail Party. Due to family commitments I was unable to attend the Open Day but know that was
also well attended and enjoyed by all.
The Ladies Lunch was held outside in the Alfresco with 130 beautiful Ladies in attendance. The Ladies committee
and myself procrastinated earlier in the year whether to hold a Xmas lunch and fashion parade at all this year as we
weren’t sure what part of the club would be ready to cater for it, i.e. change rooms, racks of clothing, makeup etc.
for models, and comfort of the many ages of our guests. But we decided to go with it and work with what we had
at the time. It was a great success with perfect weather, gorgeous volunteers modelling clothes from “Jewels by
The Sea” Boutique resort wear (Julie Barrington) Botanical Makeup by Arbonne (Jodee Pereira) Hair by “Vivid
Hair Lounge” East Fremantle (Kiara) and a beautiful display of paper flowers from “Forever Petals” by Suzanne
Fletcher. Each year I like to include local businesswomen and give them some acknowledgement and advertising,
so support these ladies if you can, they are amazing and gave their time, effort and services free of charge. Thank
you so much to the models who also gave up time for fittings at this busy time of the year, most of them still
working girls. Sue Jackson, Sue Lee, Frances Turner, Tiha Gaspar, Emma Johns and the lovely Helga, who had a
few of her sisters and friends here from Norway to celebrate her 70th birthday, all looked like professionals and
strutted their outfits beautifully whilst the Ladies Committee as usual sold tickets and in general looking after
everything making sure the day ran smoothly. Barb Jeffrey’s centrepieces are always spectacular and one lucky
person from each table got to take one home. Thanks to our wonderful staff who are pleasant and helpful at all
times, and Noe for serving a delicious Christmas Lunch.
The Kids Christmas Party is this Sunday the 11th December from 9.30 -12pm. Santa’s Helpers will be there to
organise face painting and balloon animals. There’ll be ice-cream and drinks, and a visit by Santa. Bring each child
a secret gift with their name on it valued at between $10-$20 dollars and add it to Santa’s bag when you arrive.
IF YOU CAN SPARE A BIT MORE AT THIS TIME OF THE YEAR WE ARE COLLECTING GIFTS TO BE
DISTRIBUTED BY THE SALVATION ARMY FOR THE MANY LESS FORTUNATE IN OUR
COMMUNITY.THIS CAN BE DONE BY LEAVING AN UNWRAPPED GIFT UNDER THE CLUBS TREE IN
THE ALFRESCO.
Don’t forget to book in for New Year’s Eve; where else would you want to be to kick off the New Year. Thanks
again to the hard working Ladies Committee Sue Higgs, Barb Jeffrey, Sandy Smith, Robin Wright, Lynette Jenkins
and Olwen Parry without whom a lot of things would not run so smoothly.
Thanks also to everyone who have supported Don and I through a very tough two years. Not just all our wonderful
friends, you know who you are, but Management, Staff and Committee for standing by us and giving us both a
purpose in life. We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a safe happy and of course healthy 2017.
Until Next year,
Marian Byfield
