Preface
The Swan Canning Environmental Monitoring and Reporting project is a long term
monitoring project consisting of regular sampling of the Swan and Canning Rivers
and selected tributaries within their catchments, enabling regular water quality
reporting and annual reporting on estuarine and catchment compliance against long
and short term targets. The project was initially designed and implemented in 1994
by the Swan River Trust and Department of Water (then Water and Rivers
Commission). The project currently falls under the Department of Parks and Wildlife's
River Protection Strategy and is jointly operated by the Water Science Branch of the
Department of Water and the Department of Parks and Wildlife.
The sampling conducted for this project is captured under the Department of Water
WIN data management project SG-C-SWANCATCH, consisting of fortnightly
sampling of sixteen sites.
In March 2010 a second catchment sampling project was implemented to address
gaps in previous monitoring and to provide data for predictive modelling of the Swan
Canning Catchment. This project consists of fortnightly sampling of sixteen sites and
falls under the Department of Water project SG-C-SCWQIP (Swan Canning Water
Quality Improvement Plan). Note that this sampling project was initially run from
January 2007 to June 2008 as SG-C-SWANCCI but was closed due to limited
funding.
Some important changes to the SWANCATCH and SCWQIP projects are listed
below:
• Changed from weekly to fortnightly sampling in 2001.
• Changed from specific conductivity (compensated at 25°C) to uncompensated conductivity in October 2001 and back to specific conductivity (compensated at 25°C) in September 2006.
• Added parameters Dissolved oxygen and pH in September 2006 (changed instrument from WTW to Quanta).
• Added parameters Dissolved organic nitrogen and Total organic carbon in October 2006. Total organic carbon only sampled to July 2008.
• October 2006 Canning River site moved ~500 m downstream from McKenzie Grove to Seaforth for better site access and to align with location of gauging station.
• October 2006 extra Ellen Brook site (EBAC) added to regular sampling near confluence with Avon River. Stopped sampling March 2009 due to site access issues. Site location changed to West Swan Road Bridge (SWN9) and sampling restarted March 2010.
• April 2011 SCWQIP Claise Brook site moved from SCCIN5 to CB13.

• May 2011 South Belmont Main Drain site moved ~100 m upstream from SWS11 (Great Eastern Hwy) to SWS13 (Severin Walk, Abernathy Rd) due to tidal influence at the old site (SWS11). The gauging station has also been moved (~750 m upstream to Cleaver Terrace).
• The Wandoo Creek catchment site was moved downstream to WNDCK (August 2011) as the former site, SCCIN4, was almost always dry, even in winter.
• From April 2012 onwards the SCWQIP sites list was modified and now consists of 16 sites (down from 17); four of which are new sites selected after a period of expanded monitoring where 36 sites were monitored for nine months (Aug 2011 to March 2012).

Summary
This Swan Canning Catchment quarterly data report presents data collected from a
total of fifteen sites from the SWANCATCH project. Data are presented in graphical
and tabular form for ten key analytes; Total Nitrogen, Nitrogen as
ammonia/ammonium, Total oxidised nitrogen, Dissolved organic nitrogen, Total
phosphorus, Soluble reactive phosphorus, Dissolved organic carbon, Total
suspended solids, Dissolved oxygen and Specific conductivity.
At each site the data are presented as a graph showing the previous five years of
data as monthly box plots overlain by the current year monthly medians. Data for the
lower Ellen Brook site (SWN9) and eleven of the sixteen SCWQIP sites have not been
presented in graphs because sampling only began in March 2010. Monitoring began
at the remaining five of the sixteen SCWQIP sites in August 2011, hence data was
also not available for plotting. Catchment data are presented over a calendar year
(January to December), with quarterly reports corresponding to the quarters of the
year (Jan-Mar, Apr-Jun, Jul-Sep, Oct-Dec) and each quarterly report adding to the
“current year” data already presented.
This data report is the fourth quarterly report for 2015 and presents 2015 data from
January to December over background data from 2010 to 2014. The background
monthly box plots display the median, 25th, 75th, 10th and 90th percentiles where
sufficient data exists. The graphical program used (Sigma Plot) requires a minimum
of 3 data points to calculate 25th and 75th percentiles and a minimum of 9 data points
to calculate 10th and 90th percentiles. Due to the ephemerality of many of the
catchment sites and the fortnightly sampling regime, the background monthly sample
numbers may often be quite low. For clarity the background monthly sample numbers
(n) have been reported on each graph. The limit of reporting was halved when data
was below the limit to allow the data to be graphed.
The current year’s data (2015) is presented in tables showing monthly minimum,
maximum and median values and the number of samples collected for each analyte.
Data, collected from the sixteen SWANCATCH and sixteen SCWQIP sites, is also
displayed in tabular form near the end of this report with quarterly means and
standard deviations of the ten key analytes displayed for all sites in one comparison
table.
The September to December quarter saw Perth record 54.8mm of rainfall which is
just under two thirds of the long term average (90.1mm). Perth recorded its warmest
October on record and November saw “very much warmer than normal days and
nights” (BOM 2015).
Although all 16 sites were flowing at the beginning of October, by the end of
December almost half (7/16) had ceased to flow and were either stationary pools or
completely dry.

Stream flow across SW WA was much lower than average during 2015, and three of
the lowest stream flow years (total annual discharge) have come in the past six
years. Rainfall (617.8mm) recorded at Perth Metro for 2015 was ranked low and
amounted to 73% of the average annual total rainfall. Perth’s winter was noticeably
dry and the 9th driest on record at the Perth Metro site (BOM).
In terms of the catchment summaries it must be remembered, when attempting to
draw comparisons between monthly median data points and the previous five years
of data, that the background plot may be extrapolated from as few as 10 discrete
data points over a 5 year period. This is then compared against a monthly median of
as few as one or two, and a maximum of three, data points. Any collected data is
only representative of a single point in time at a specific place. The scope for natural
variability is high and any ‘analysis’ of this data must bear that in mind.

The peak TN and TP concentrations, unsurprisingly, coincided with the onset of (late)
winter flows in the Upper Avon during August and into September and a similar
pattern was also evident for NOx, dissolved organic nitrogen, SRP and DOC,
(although the phosphorus concentrations were low). The very high specific
conductivity recorded in August would suggest an input from a more saline sub
catchment of the Avon system further upstream.
Dissolved oxygen concentrations in the water were relatively low from September to
the end of 2015; presumably due to a combination of steadily reducing flows but also
rapidly increasing water temperature (from 15ºC in Sept to almost 25 ºC by early
Nov).
The apparently low TN in June was only due to the fact there were three data points
and the median value was unrepresentatively low.

The Bayswater MD gauge experience some problems affecting stage height, hence
the hydrograph only begins in mid-March.
The catchment is typically flashy in response to rain events; being entirely urbanised.
The 2015 data generally followed the background plot, however this catchment’s
response to rain and the relatively late onset of winter rain and flow in 2015 resulted
in some parameters (most notably NOx, SRP and DOC) being recorded at
concentrations outside the 10th to 90th percentiles; this is however not unexpected
since flow is in response to changing rainfall patterns and also given the clear
variability in the data for some of the measured parameters.

The Bickley Brook catchment is small and flashy in response to rain events. As a
result the variation in measured analytes is relatively large compared to other
catchments. The spike in TN concentration during May was largely due to the NOx
concentration; events like this are not uncommon in this catchment and are also part
of the reason for the great variability seen in measured analytes; in conjunction with
the poor land use practices often observed in the surrounding area.

The Canning River generally has good water quality, as was the case in 2015; but
there was a relatively high concentration recorded (above the 90th percentile) in May
for TN and NOx which coincided with the second highest peak flow event for the
year. Other 2015 data was generally similar to the background plot of the previous
five years of collected data.
The specific conductivity recorded in December was higher than background data;
possibly due to flashy inputs to the catchment (seen in the hydrograph in early
November and December) and the materials that would have deposited into the
system. It could also be simply a shift due to changing patterns of rainfall and stream
flow, when you consider the difference between the November and the December
background data for specific conductivity.

Ellen Brook only flowed for 4 months during, which is an unusually short period of
time. The 2015 data generally followed the background data; but that it is quite
variable. TN and TP concentrations were consistently very high, as is also usual for
this catchment. The June TN and NH3 were unusually high when compared to the
background data but that could be due to the fact there was only one data point for
that month and also that there isn’t a lot of background data (shown by the fact there
are no whisker lines for June).

The Helena River hydrograph shows a slightly more riverine flow regime than smaller
and more urbanised catchments. The lower than usual dissolved oxygen recorded
during between September and November could possibly be due to reduced flows;
but the water temperature also rose by 7.5ºC between September and November
and that would also have an effect on the dissolved oxygen concentration in the
water. TSS was particularly variable in the Helena River but there is much evidence
of that in background data too.
The difference between the June data and the background plot for some analytes
may simply be due to lack of background data and may only be normal variability,
which is more noticeable in this catchment than some. The 2015 DOC data was often
higher than the 90th percentile (where there was sufficient data to plot them) of the
background data.

Jane Brook only flowed for a relatively short period (presumably due to the dry
winter), between July and November. The 2015 TN concentrations were relatively
low; this pattern was reflected in the NOx and dissolved organic nitrogen
concentrations. TP concentrations were also relatively low during 2015 but not as
noticeably as for TN.
TSS concentrations were slightly elevated compared to the background data,
possibly due to the pulses of flow that characterised the 2015 Jane Brook hydrograph
and that type of intermittent high flow can mobilise laterite based clays on the scarp
down through the catchment.
Dissolved oxygen concentrations were lower than the background data for the last
three months of the year; during this time the flow at the sampling site decreased
rapidly as the water temperature increased (from 14ºC in late September to 22ºC by
the end of December).

Mills St MD 2015 data was generally similar to that recorded over the previous five
years of background data.
The only deviation from this was the slightly elevated TSS, TP and SRP recorded in
April. This most likely was a result of a rain driven flow event in the second week of
April.
The slightly lower DOC recorded in April may also be due to the same flow event, or
could just be natural variation as the April background plot is much ‘tighter’ than it is
for adjacent months

The South Belmont MD data during 2015 was generally similar to the past 5 years of
background data with the exception of elevated TN and TP in August, apparently due
to higher than normal NOx, NH3 and SRP; and DOC, which was elevated during
spring; with for no obvious reason for either observed derivation from background
data, other than being natural variation of highly variable measured parameters in a
dynamic system.

The most noticeable thing about Susannah Brook in 2015 was the lack of flow; the
site only flowed for 10 weeks in spring, between August and October. Past data has
tended to exhibit high variability and 2015 was fairly similar in that regard.
The lower than usual TN (August and September) was matched by the NOx data
over the same period. However the TN data during October was then higher than
previous data possibly driven by higher than usual NH3 and dissolved organic
nitrogen data. The TP and SRP data during the same month was noticeably higher
than the past data but the actual concentrations are very low.

The Yule Brook data during 2015 generally followed the same pattern as the
previous 5 years of data with two notable exceptions:
Firstly, the very obvious spike in TSS in April is assumed to be an artefact of poor
field sampling technique, since there was no major flow event in April to mobilise
particulates nor any mention of an algal bloom in the field notes.
Also, during February there was a clear spike in the TN data (largely due to nitrogen
as ammonia/ammonium) and also in TP and SRP data. This data coincides with a
peak flow event in early February, probably as a result of the rain that fell during that
period (~40mm over a week). Prior to this there had been no rain for two months so
the material that had built up over time in the catchment was washed into the brook.
It is worth considering why this pulse of nutrients was more pronounced in Yule
Brook than other catchments; did Yule Brook received more rain than other areas or
is it due to particular land uses or activities within the catchment?
