    National service provides an exceptionalopportunity for Americans of all ages,backgrounds and abilities to serve theircountry and to develop a passion for service

    for a lifetime. This workshop will explore thecurrent status of people with disabilities inAmerica, provide a broad vision for buildingnational service programs that celebratediversity and inclusion, and will offer practicalsuggestion and strategies for how to build anational service program that invites diversityand inclusion from the ground up.

    Participants will be provided with a thumbnailoverview of the current state of the state forpeople with disabilities in the US and willdevelop a new appreciation for the inclusionof people with disabilities

    Participants will develop a deeperunderstanding and appreciation for beingintentionally inclusive instead of

    unintentionally exclusive.Participants will create a plan to strengthen

    and expand their inclusive serviceenvironments, practices and strategies.

    The U.S Bureau of Census andStatistics reports that 54 million peopleare living with some level of disability inour country. The UN estimates thatthere are one-half billion people with

    disabilities throughout the world.

    For people with disabilities, manyresearch studies validate the existenceof wide gaps in almost every importantquality of life measure.

    People with disabilities are much more

    likely to be unemployed,underemployed, or homeless.

    People with disabilities are more likelyto have difficulty accessing a qualityeducation, affordable housing,adequate health care, child care,recreation, leisure, and publictransportation.

    often a situation problem.

    Often the heart and mind disagree. Fervently.

    Self-control is an exhaustible resource. Whenpeople try to change things, they tinker with

    behaviors that have become automatic. Thebigger the change youre suggesting, the moreit will sap peoples self control.
