Make a plan for garage organization

Spring cleaning plans are on the minds of many once the weather warms up. Many homeowners feel a sense of renewal in the spring, when the desire to clean house and get organized becomes a priority.

Garages are often targets for homeowners hoping to target clutter. Once a space reserved for cars, garages are no longer strictly for vehicles, used instead to store items that simply do not fit inside the home or a backyard shed. Organizing the garage is typically a weekend or several-day project. Here’s how to turn a garage from a cluttered mess into a space suited for storing items of all shapes and sizes.

* Enlist a helper. Organizing a garage is a significant undertaking that is best tackled with two or more people. Enlist a helper to make the project less intimidating.* Decide what is important to keep. Start the organization process by clearing out the garage and taking inventory of what you have. Items that have not been used for several years can likely be tossed. Make a pile of what will be kept and then put the rest at the curb or donate useful items to charity.* Give thought to where you want to store particular items. Tools and items that are used more often should be stored within reach or where easily visible, while items that are not used as frequently can be stored higher up. Think about how you operate in the garage. Recycling bins can be stored closer to the door into the home, while bicycles and skates can be nearer to the garage door for easy access.

* Group like items together. Categorize items that will be kept. Garden tools, camping gear, sporting equipment, and

automotive supplies should be categorized and stored in their own areas of the garage, determining if certain items can be stored inside the home to free up garage space. Grouping items together will make them easier to locate in the garage.* Move boxed items into clear storage containers. It’s much easier to see what you have when it is stored in clear containers. Some containers are interlocking or stackable, making i t much more convenient to store items vertically and free up more floor space.* Invest in vertical storage systems. Moving items from the floor and putting them on shelving or behind cabinets can make the garage more organized. Hooks and bins also can be used. Employ a peg board full of hooks for oft-used tools or other items you need at the ready.* Leave space for hobby and work areas. Garages are where many improvement projects begin or where hobbies, such as woodworking or crafting, take place. Leave space for these tasks and hobbies.* Give the space a fresh coat of paint. Some garages are dingy and dark. Bright paint on the walls and floor can open up the space and, when combined with more lighting, can make it lighter and brighter.

Garage organization is a common spring cleaning project. But it shouldn’t be reserved for this season alone. Periodic checks of the garage and straightening up can keep a garage clean and organized throughout the entire year and make yearly spring cleaning much more manageable.

9 ways to improve curb appeal Homeowners who want their homes to make strong first impressions must prioritize curb appeal. Homes with strong curb appeal sell well and can impart a welcoming feel to all visitors. Improving

curb appeal need not be expensive, and the following are a handful of ways to improve the appearance of your home.

1. Install a bold-looking door in a vibrant color or one with a custom design. This helps the home stand out from other properties in the neighborhood.2. Edge the driveway to create a distinct border between the driveway and the lawn or other landscaping features. This helps homes appear neat and well kept.3. Use outdoor lighting to make a home more inviting. Outdoor lighting also makes properties safer to traverse at night.4. Clean a home’s exterior to remove mildew or discolorations from the siding, driveway, patio, and other outdoor elements.5. Improve landscapes with fresh plants and seasonal color. Homeowners without the time to plant can consider container gardens, which don’t take much time to assemble but still add appeal

to a home’s exterior.6. Prune planting beds and

add new mulch to restore color. Add shutters and accent trim to a home’s exterior to

improve on the beauty of the house.

Woodcraft Suggests Plan for Year of ‘Dream Home Projects’

(MS) -- Spend some quality time with your house, and make a list of the pluses and minuses as if you were considering whether to buy it. Use this list to develop projects that will create your “dream home” over a year’s time. To help you, Woodcraft offers some ideas for projects and products.

Project Ideas

* Use paints, stains, dyes, finishes, and related products to reinvigorate the wood throughout your home, including doors, shutters, walls and furniture.

* Add molding or other trim to give walls an upscale look.

* Expand storage space with wall-hung or free-standing shelving in as many rooms and areas as possible, matching shapes, hardware and color to each room’s decor.

* Replace or upcycle kitchen, bathroom or garage cabinets, as well as outdated bathroom vanities.

* Add a wood deck, patio or porch to your outdoor area, and repair/revive or build outdoor benches and other furniture.

“If the changes you envision involve unfamiliar tasks, do some research,” says Woodcraft product manager Ben Bice. “We offer books about home improvement topics, as well as ‘Woodcraft M a g a z i n e ’ t e c h n i q u e downloads and how-to videos for many products online. Or get some expert advice at your nearest Woodcraft store.”

Helpful Products

* General Finishes Water-Based Milk Paints include a 28-color base selection of premixed acrylic paints that can be combined to create even more colors suitable for indoor or outdoor projects. Use the milk paint with the six translucent Glaze Effects to create eye-catching decorative finishes, such as distressing, antiquing or shabby chic.

* General Finishes Gel Stains and Topcoat are easy to use -- simply wipe on with a rag and wipe off the excess.

Stains are available in 12 shades, including the popular Java and Georgian Cherry. A perfect solution for attractive redesigns at an affordable price.

* OneTime Wood Protector is a proprietary acrylate resin blend that penetrates wood’s cellular structure and cures it by exposure to UV radiation. It protects new wood, old wood, pressure treated wood, or wood that has had the previous coating removed -- for seven years! Great for outdoor wood projects such as wood shake roof, deck, chairs, picnic tables, fences and more.

* Festool’s Rotex RO90 Mul t i -Purpose Sander switches easily between three sanding modes -- aggressive, random orbi ta l f in ish sanding, and delta detail sanding -- that will handle a host of tasks from stripping stubborn paint to creating a smooth finish.

* Earlex Gemini HVLP Sprayer can be used as a cup fed gun to spray fine finishes and paints, or with a pump to push water-based paint/stain directly from the can via a 13’ hose to the gun for covering large surfaces.

* The QuikBENCH Portable Workbench holds 300 pounds alone; add another to form a sawhorse to hold 2,000 pounds. Or connect several for a larger workstation. If you need a scaffold, choose the portable Vika Twofold Workbench and Scaffold. Both benches include power strips.

* The EZ Pro Crown King Crown Molding Jig from General Tools works with a mitersaw to cut crown molding joints precisely without difficult angle calculations and compound angle cuts.

* 3M PSA-Backed Veneer i s rea l wood veneer permanently bonded to 3M Pressure Sensitive Adhesive. It can be applied to MDF, particleboard, plywood, and drywall with excellent results. The veneer is used for

furniture repair, countertops, shelves, and architectural applications.

* Fein’s MultiMaster Q Start Kit is equipped for sawing, rasping, scraping, removing grout, sanding, polishing, and cutting, all powered by a 250-watt, variable-speed motor.

* “Transforming Your K i t c h e n w i t h S t o c k Cabinetry” is a 160-page softcover book by cabinetmaker Jonathan Benson and his wife, Sherry Benson, a chef, that shows how to transform a kitchen using money-saving stock cabinetry and a well-thought-out plan.

* Grex 18-Gauge 2” Nailer -- Green Buddy is a precision nailer that fires 1/2” to 2” 18-gauge nails for trim and moldings, cabinet assembly, furniture and cabinet finish work, jig fixtures, light wood assembly and more.

* The Kreg Jig(R) K5 Pocket Hole System offers an easy way to use pocket hole joints in your furniture and home

projects, such as decks and porches.

* M1 Tape Measure features patented Sight Scribe that allows you to measure and mark without a pencil. Lock your measurement with the M1 blade lock, and take it wherever you need to mark.

To learn more about these

products and others that can help you update your home, visit your local Woodcraft store, call (800) 535-4482 or visit www.woodcraft.com.

These home improvements may actually lower home value

Home improvements are typically made to improve the functionality and look of a home, but renovations also can increase the value of a home. Certain changes to a home can make it more attractive to prospective buyers, while other renovations may make a home less appealing. For example, a complete overhaul of an outdated kitchen is often a smart financial move, while installing a pool or hot tub may not be worth the cost to homeowners. Separating the good from the bad renovations makes smart financial sense, and homeowners looking to improve their homes’ resale values may want to avoid the following projects.

* Bedroom and garage conversions: Changing a room’s traditional function often turns off buyers. For example, turning a garage into a home gym might seem like a great idea for you, but it may not be so appealing to prospective buyers. Buyers can certainly reconvert the space, but they would consider the costs of such a conversion when making their offers on the home.

* Stylized colors on trims and rooms: Painting over unappealing colors is a project many homeowners can handle. However, some may be discouraged by a home that has too many bright colors or textures on the walls and trims. Buyers often want homes that are move-in ready, meaning they can get settled in before undertaking large projects. A living room painted in purple or zebra print may not fit the design scheme of many buyers. Dark colors do not easily disappear, and taping off and painting trimwork or changing it entirely can be equally time-consuming. Stick with neutral colors when selling a home, even if this means giving rooms a new coat of paint before putting your house on the market.

* Outdoor hot tubs and indoor spa tubs: Many people find soaking in a bubbling brew of hot water quite inviting. But buyers often do not want to inherit a used hot tub. Although hot tubs are cleaned and maintained with sanitizing chemicals, some people may view them as unsanitary. Removing a hot tub can be labor-intensive.

And much like a pool, a hot tub may not be appealing to buyers with young children.

* Removing closets: Closet space is often high on buyers’ priority lists. Turning closet space into an office or removing a closet to make a room bigger may be fine for those who are staying put. But these modifications can be a turn-off to prospective buyers.

* Too many features: In an effort to “keep up with the Joneses,” some homeowners will over-improve their home to the point that it outshines all others on the street. There is a case for having nice things, but homeowners may struggle to sell a home that is disproportionate to other homes in the area. Practice moderation when making improvements to attract more buyers.

These suggestions are merely guidelines and should not replace the advice of a reputable real estate agent when marketing a home. Housing features and what buyers are interested in vary across the country. Some items may be desireable in specif ic areas but undesireable elsewhere. Making informed choices before renovating can help homeowners recoup the largest share of their investments.

My basement is wet; now what?

Few things can cause more damage to a home than water. Leaks and flooding can cause various structural insufficiencies and may lead to unsafe conditions in a home. Panic often sets in when water enters a home.

Some homeowners live in areas where a high water table inevitably forces groundwater up and into subterranean living spaces. Others may live close to coastal areas or rivers and VWUHDPVWKDWFDQRYHUÀRZDQGcause home flooding. Still others who may not have had a water problem before learn that a heavy rainfall, and perhaps inadequate drainage outdoors, can cause water damage to a home.

Compounding these issues is the fact that very often a home’s utility systems are located out of the way in basements, or these spaces may be finished to create additional living space. Water in a basement can be much more than a nuisance. Water

can lead to thousands of dollars in damage.

Moisture or several inches of water in a basement is nothing to take lightly. Furnaces and water heaters damaged by water can be costly to replace. Wires that come in contact with water can become hazards DQG FDXVH DQ HOHFWULFDO ¿UHand water in a basement may be a harbinger for bacteria and viruses, creating unsanitary living conditions in the home. Mold spores that have developed in a damp basement can spread to other areas of the home thanks to a heating and cooling forced air system. And a cool, damp spot can be the perfect habitat for insects.

When a basement develops a water problem, it is best to call in a professional. Although it might not be cheap, calling a professional can help you to remedy the situation faster than if you try several methods to fix the water problem yourself. When looking for a waterproofing company, seek recommendat ions from people you trust. Only do business with licensed professional contractors who are willing to give you a free estimate. You also can check out businesses by contacting consumer advocacy groups. You may be able to read up on their business practices and learn if there have been any complaints lodged against a company in the past.

Hydrostatic pressure, poor foundations and cracks can each cause water to enter the house. Each situation is different, and a combination of exterior and interior changes may need to be made. In order to alleviate some water problems, certain PRGL¿FDWLRQVPXVWEHPDGHWhile the following solutions may not be applicable in each situation, they are some of the PRUHFRPPRQPRGL¿FDWLRQVplumbers suggest when ¿[LQJÀRRGHGEDVHPHQWV

* Sump pump: In some cases, the installation of a well and a submersible pump may be all that’s needed to keep basements dry. When water rises high enough to start

the pump, the sump pump will then expel the water out through a pipe to a drain or the street. Sometimes a sump pump works in concert with a French drainage system, which is a channel around the perimeter of the basement that funnels water to the sump pump well.

* Va p o r b a r r i e r s : Vinyl, plastic and paint encapsulation systems may be applied to the interior of foundation walls to serve as a barrier system. This prevents

water or condensation from reaching the interior of the house. A vapor barrier may extend below the foundation to direct water runoff into a drainage system.

* Exterior fixes: There are many ways to address flooding from outside the home. These include using outdoor vapor barriers and paints, having grading issues FRUUHFWHGVRZDWHUZLOOÀRZaway from the home, digging of a swale to catch water away from the basement,

exterior drainage systems, and utilizing specialized rain gutters and downspouts to direct water further away from the home during rainstorms.

* P l u m b i n g r e p a i r s : Sometimes water issues may be the result of a pipe backup or a faulty appliance and not necessarily an outdoor water issue. In these cases, repairing the source of the leak may be all that’s needed.

Shopping for a fire pit

People have sat around an open fire outdoors for centuries. Not only does fire provide warmth and light, but also it offers a relaxing setting for conversation and socialization.

The outdoor fire pit has transformed the concept of backyard entertaining. Homeowners understand how a fire pit can add value to a home and make their yard an inviting place to be on a summer evening or a chilly autumn night.

Outdoor fire pits are a relatively new creation that continue to grow in popularity. Once available strictly through specialty retailers, fire pits can now be found on the shelves of many home improvement and big box stores as well as online.

Fire pits can add a lot to a home’s exterior entertaining area. Some fire pit styles and materials will last longer than others. Homeowners should assess their needs and the space available before choosing a fire pit for their home.

First, homeowners must decide if they want a permanent or portable fire pit. If you are ready to make an enduring change to your yard and landscape, then a permanent fire pit is the way to go. These can be made of stone or brick and are often very durable. Permanent fire pits can be incorporated into landscape designs to create a professional patio look. They’re also some of the safer types of fire pits because they cannot be knocked over and the bricks or retaining wall construction provide a barrier around the fire.

Portable f ire pits are freestanding units that can be moved around the yard on a whim. They also can be loaded into the car and taken to a neighbor’s house or even to the beach. Portable fire pits are less expensive than permanent models, and some homeowners prefer a trial run with a portable pit before deciding to install a permanent structure.

Portable fire pits are made of metal and usually coated with a fireproof paint. Over time, exposure to the elements can cause the metal to rust or weaken, something homeowners should consider prior to purchase.

Homeowners also must consider a fuel source. Wood is a common fuel source for fire pits. Wood can be inexpensive, especially when gathered from around the yard. However, a wood-burning fire will constantly have to be fed with new branches. If you want to have a roaring fire but don’t want to maintain it, then a gas-fueled fire pit is better. Natural gas fire pits can run off of a portable propane tank (think barbecue tank) or be directly connected to a home’s natural gas supply.

Now you can decide on the style. Gas fire pits will give you a greater number of design options, but there are still plenty of choices with wood fire pits. From bowl-shaped pits to rectangular-shaped pits to barrel-style pits to chimineas, there are designs to fit most preferences and size constraints.

Once you have chosen a fire pit, safety should prevail. Here are some tips to consider.

* Keep the fire pit away from

the home and objects that can burn. Maintain a safe distance from the fire pit at all times.* The best place to have the fire pit is on hard stone, cement or tile. Portable fire pits can be placed on patio stones in the lawn.* Use a screen to keep embers and sparks from escaping during use.* Keep children a good distance away from the fire pit and always supervise when the pit is in use.* Make sure the fire is completely extinguished before going in for the night.* Do not use any accelerants to make the fire bigger or light faster.* Buy a vinyl cover to protect the fire pit from the elements when not in use.

How to treat a termite problem

Termites are houseguests few homeowners want to experience. With their reputation for voracity and the damage they can inflict on a home, termites are something most people want to avoid at all costs. If termites are already a problem or something homeowners simply want to prevent, there are effective ways to banish these unwelcome guests or keep them from ever entering a home.

What is a termite?

Termites are small social insects that have the capability to destroy wood. Sometimes they are mistaken for ants, but the two insects are quite different. Termites are actually close relatives to the cockroach. Many termites appear as white or light-colored and may seem translucent. Winged termites are darker in color. Termites have a grub-shaped body but, unlike ants, no discernable hourglass-shaped waist. Also, their antennae are straight and look beaded, like a string of pearls, while ants have elbowed antennae. Another way to differentiate ants from termites is that termite eyes are very small or nonexistent, while ants’ eyes are clearly visible.

Termites live in a nest or colony in large numbers. Their primary food source is plant fiber, known as cellulose. Most termites are rarely seen unless they are swarming or if their nest or a portion of wood has been opened revealing the insects inside.

Treating termitesMany people do not even know they have a termite problem until that problem has escalated. Because they remain hidden most of the WLPHWHUPLWHVFDQEHGLI¿FXOWto detect. Incidences of soft wood or visual recognition of swarming termites that occur in the spring can indicate that termites could be residing in a structure or nearby. There are different types of termites, and proper identification is QHFHVVDU\WR¿QGWKHFRUUHFWtreatment option.

Unlike other pests, termites are pests whose detection and removal is best left to a professional who can recognize the subtle signs. He or she will identify certain signs of an infestation, such as mud-looking material on wooden surfaces, discarded wings from a swarm, piles of sawdust, termite tubes running outdoors from the soil to a home, buckling paint, and other indications.

There are different ways to prevent or treat a termite infestation. To

prevent termites, there are applications of termiticides that are put into the soil surrounding a home or structure. Also, removal of moisture in and around the house is key because termites need moist conditions for survival. Poisoning of nests is also a treatment option.

If termites already have LQ¿OWUDWHGDKRPHIXPLJDWLRQmay be necessary to remedy that problem. However, fumigation is not always effective at killing eggs and all of the termites. Most exterminators will use a combination of treatments to rid a home of termites.

If extreme wood damage has occurred, portions of the structure may have to be removed and rebuilt. This also may help alleviate some of the scent trails termites use to travel to and from nests and food sources.

Other termite prevention tips

There are other tactics to prevent a termite problem.

* Don’t store firewood in contact with the ground.

* Use chemically treated

wood for building structures.

* Disguise wood by painting it or using a shellac or varnish. Termites may not like the taste of treated wood.

* Prevent hidden entry points where termites can go unseen.

* Remove cardboard , newspaper, cotton materials and any other cellulose from WKHÀRRU

* Vent kitchens and baths so that they will not trap moisture.

* Fix any and all water leaks.

* Don’t plant gardens or put soil directly against a home’s exterior walls.

Some simple precautions and a routine inspection can prevent termites from becoming a problem.
