Chapel NotesPastor Richard Koerselman

Some things get started on the wrong foot no matter how hard we try to make a good, fi rst impression. The following story illustrates that point.

A young man called his mother and announced excitedly that he had just met a young lady of excellent character and reputation who interested him very much. What should he do to try to impress her?

His mother had an idea. “Why don’t you send her fl owers, and on the card invite her to your apartment for a home-cooked meal.”

He thought that was a great idea, and a week later, the woman came to dinner. His mother called the next day to see how things had gone. “I was totally humiliated” he moaned. “She insisted on washing the dishes.”

“Why, what’s wrong with that?” asked his mother. “Mom, we hadn’t even started eating yet.” He didn’t make a very good fi rst impression. Each of us

could write an ending to the story. Would he keep trying to win the love of that woman

or search somewhere else. Would he give up and resign himself to the single life? It’s the New Year. This is a time when we all get in the

mood for new starts. We want to do our best to keep the promises we make. And we make a lot of them. We commit to wearing a helmet riding our bike; cutting our sugar intake; rebuilding a relationship with our brother whom we have not talked to for years. And some of you might be ready to make a resolution to help those in crisis - serving food at the soup kitchen, volunteering at a youth rehab program or visiting the sick in the hospital. Or perhaps you are thinking about attending worship and singing the old hymns that you heard as a child.

A French philosopher, Blaise Pascal once said, “We all have a God-shaped hole in us,” and that God-shaped hole can only be fi lled with the things of God. It’s a yearning void waiting to be fi lled. I encourage you to make a resolution to fi ll that void. Make 2016, a year to remember.

GARDEN CONDO III NEWS

Wow! How the neighborhood has grown in such a short time. By now, almost all of our community is full, a tee time reservation is mandatory, tennis courts are humming, the gyms are clanking, the softball is fl ying, and club events are full. Summer has lulled many of us into a feeling of being the last people on earth. Now the rest of the population is here and it is great to have everyone bring the vibrancy for another season. If you cannot fi nd anything to do here, you are not looking around. Join in and enjoy!

Garden Condo Community Social Event is on January 28. Please call Julianne Hansen at 678-448-8843 [[email protected]] and volunteer to assist. For the rest of us, prepare for a perfect time to meet your neighbors and kick off the “winter” season.

The Community Recycling program is in place, and the bins are located for your convenience. Just be sure to put only recyclable stuff in the proper bins please. Remember, you asked for recycling and we now have it, so let us all use it properly

Changes, they are a coming…Most of us moved to the condominium community from a freestanding house, or still have a summerhouse elsewhere. As we transition to condominium life, we must consider that there are differences in what we can do with our condominiums as opposed to a standalone building. As a reminder, it is the responsibility of each homeowner to request authorization from the Architectural Committee prior to making any exterior alterations. If you are making a change to front screens, satellite dish or any other physical changes, contact Wayne Berg for the “must complete” forms and guidance prior to installation. You can fi nd Wayne’s number posted at the bulletin boards, so call him for assistance.

Welcome to our “Winter” Now get out there and enjoy it!

Garden Condo IIIThe festive spirit of 2015 holidays will continue for

Garden Condo III residents with a PARTY on January 28th in the Auditorium. DO NOT MISS IT!! Be sure to get your tickets in the SVE offi ce beginning the 28th of December and continuing to Friday, January 21st. Tickets are limited.

The best bargain of 2016 is a ticket that costs only $10.00 per person. We will have dinner catered by Joe’s BBQ and entertainment by two of the Mann brothers, Ole and Gene, who will sing your favorite songs by request. You may be familiar with them from Karaoke at Willie’s. They are seasoned and versatile entertainers. You couldn’t ask for a more delightful combo.

Dinner includes Joe’s famous BBQ sandwiches, cowboy beans and mac ‘n’ cheese. Ice cream will round out the dining experience. It will just slide down and fi ll in the cracks. Coffee and lemonade will be provided. BYOB for a more sparkling experience. Thanks to those who have offered to help at the January event. Your help is very much appreciated.

For questions or to volunteer, call: Julie Hansen, 678 448- 8843 or Teresa Esterly, 320 249- 8898. See you in January!

Break out the calendar…It’s 2016! The New Year marks a fresh new start of brighter and more exciting journeys. I hope you will have the most enjoyable ride ever! Happy New Year to you and your family! As we grow older in life, years seem to shorten and New Year’s Day approaches with an ever increasing tempo.

The more mature we get, the more we realize that time is only relative; how we live means more than how long we live. We are so blessed to live in this beautiful community. If anyone needs a “helping hand”, it seems there is always someone to help.

Important dates for January, 2016: January 20, 2016 – 1:30: Board Meeting in Saguaro Room

January 25, 2016 – 5:00: “Summer from the Basket” Picnic Party: Tickets will be $5 per couple or $2.50 a single. Someone will be coming around to sell tickets. I hope you can make it!

The car show will be coming up on Thursday, February 25, 2016. We will show a video of last year’s car show at our January 25th Picnic.

Be sure to welcome our new owners and renters! I’ve met some really nice new people.

The Great Minnesota Get Together

Save the Date!!!! All present and former Minnesotans and guests are invited to attend an Ice Cream Social on Wednesday, March 2, 2016, at the SVE Auditorium from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. There will be entertainment and door prizes. SVE LIBRARYWANTED: Volunteers for

our SVE library. Currently nearly every shift has coverage. However, the library could use more people. Extra bodies are needed if a regular volunteer has an appointment or has travel plans. Being in the library is the most exhilarating volunteer experience that SVE offers.

“UNBROKEN” is one of the longest-running titles on the NYT best seller list. “On a May afternoon in 1943 Lt. Louis Zamperini crashed into the Pacifi c Ocean and disappeared.” is

but the beginning of a truly gut wrenching biography. Zamperini had led a less than stellar life prior to his USAF enlistment. You be the judge – did this aid or hinder his military career? The true grit of his makeup comes forward to help him survive the ocean ordeal. He was a heroic WWII soldier who not only survived the Pacifi c Ocean but also the worst of prisoner of war experiences. Thanks to Laura Hillenbrand, the author of “Sea biscuit” we walk in the footsteps of Lt. Louis Zamperini.

Total year-to-date for all areas of Operations is $1,693,096.60 and was above budget by $218,990.29.

Expenses for the month shows landscaping and offi ce expenses were above budget. However, the majority of all other expenses are below budget for the month. Currently, we have a surplus of a positive net income for Operations of $186,097.38.

The bank accounts and investments are reconciled. As of November 30th for operations, there is a balance in the bank accounts and investments of approximately $580,336.90. In additions, the reserve/capital balance in the bank accounts is $953,187.74.

SECURITY REPORT – Bill RandallSecurity has reported a total of 105 garage doors left open,

91 total RV’s parked overnight on surface streets and escorts provided to Bingo singles and other activities. As a reminder, please ensure that your guests have secured a guest pass or are provided an escort to use all of the facilities. Also, when leaving a building or room that the lights are turned off and all appropriate doors are locked securely.

ARCHITECTURAL REPORT – Roy BraunbergerFor the month of November, there were 57 for architectural

changes, two (2) violations, fi ve (5) second violations, three (3) rescinded and two (2) courtesy letters issued. There was a total of 11 homes changed hands for the month.

MANAGER’S REPORT - Lisa TitmasLand acquisition update. Per Craig Ahlstrom, CEO

of Farnsworth Properties, the family is ready to resume discussion on the property. Any prior discussion is voided. Both parties will begin from scratch. This includes potentially

purchasing the land in its entirety. Once again, be leery of anyone asking for personal information either via phone or at your door. There are a lot of scams out there. There are four new computers in the library. When walking, running or driving your golf car in the evening or early morning hours, please take the time to use refl ective tape on your clothing and turn your golf cart lights on.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT – John HewittThis past year has gone so fast. Our next Board meeting in

January could possibly be the last for this board as assembled. It’s time to vote for next year’s representatives. Ballots will be mailed out sometime this week. The last of two (2) candidates meetings have been held. We also vote on whether to move our annual meeting date ahead two (2) months to accommodate resident’s schedules during the holidays. Should the majority of you feel it is a good idea and pass the proposed bylaw change, the board elected on January 20, 2016 would serve an extra two (2) month term in 2017

If so, you must complete the SVE Renters Application, every year you have a renter, even if it is the same renter each year, and provide a copy to the association offi ce. There is no fee associated with this application. This applies to seasonal renters and long term year round renters.

SVE has many amenities for our renters to enjoy. In order for them to have access to the fi tness center, etc., they must be “registered” with the SVE HOA offi ce. It is your responsibility as the homeowner to complete the SVE Renters Application.

In order for SVE to maintain an adult community status of persons 55 years of age or older, the SVE HOA must obtain age verifi cation on all renters in accordance with the SVE RCCRs 4.1.9 and the Housing for Older Persons Act, 1995. In keeping with

this law, the application must be completed in its entirety with the renter’s name, date of birth, phone number and the dates

they are renting your property. Acceptable documents to verify age: driver’s license, passport,

military ID, or any other state, local, national or international

documentation that shows date of birth. This information is updated in your homeowner’s fi le.

In addition, we provide our security guard with your renters name, telephone number and rental dates.

The rental application is available in the association offi ce or you may download the form from the SVE website; www.svehoa.com , click on Village Info, then click on Village Rules, Guidelines, and Forms. If you have questions, please contact Linda Hayden at 380-0106.

Fitness ClubHAPPY NEW YEAR. Now that you have made the

resolutions for 2016 to be a healthy year, come join us at the Fitness Centers. Our new elliptical, treadmill or stair climber machines will help you lose that holiday weight gain. Come try them out. The Fitness Committee has also requested the purchase of four new treadmills this year to replace the outdated treadmills in the North Center with the current four treadmills in the South Fitness Center. We want to keep making SVE Fitness Centers in good shape.

A reminder to members that there are rules that have to be followed for the use of the Fitness Centers. These include: No beverages other than water is allowed in the Centers. No one under 18 years of age is allowed to use the equipment; after the use of a machine, it is to be wiped down with solution and toweling supplied; and do not alter the thermostats or roller shade settings. All the rules are posted at the entryway, if you are not familiar with them, please read them. You are responsible for your guests following these rules as well.

The Donation Plaques are now on display in the South Fitness Center, located on the North wall. The plaques honor those who have generously given to the Fitness Club to help purchase the great equipment we enjoy here at SVE. There is still room for more names, if you would like to donate to the Fitness Club for future equipment purchases. We are also taking donations for the ornamental decorations in front of the South Fitness Center. They were on loan to us from the sculptor and need to be funded to keep them. Donations can be made at the SVE Offi ce for the SVE Fitness Club. Thank you.

LAPIDARY/SILVERSMITHING

CLUBSharleen Harvey

WELCOME TO THE NEW YEAR IN SVE! Now is the time to develop a new hobby. The Lapidary and Silversmithing workshop is buzzing with new projects by club members.

The election of offi cers was held at the December meeting and the following members will serve for year 2016: President Wayne Gish, Vice President Will Yarde, Secretary Margie Ginnaty, and Treasurer Sharleen Harvey. All SVE residents who have an interest in “rockhounding”, lapidary work, or silversmithing, should stop by the workshop located in the SVE north complex. For your use, are diamond bladed cutting saws, grinders, sanders and polishing equipment to fi nish your stones. If you don’t have any stones, but would like to learn the skills, you will fi nd a supply of “rough rocks and minerals” to choose from in your learning process. All the tools and supplies needed to create the silver mountings for the stones are on hand in the workshop and members will be glad to help you learn the craft.

The workshop is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and visitors are always welcome.

DRAMA CLUB

Come one, come all, to the delightful Drama Club! The fi rst meeting was held and we had a hilarious time reading through some outstanding scripts found by our awesome director, Vickie Briscoe. There was a murder mystery, slapstick comedy and lots of fun plays to choose from. We would love to have others join us on our quest to step out in the bright lights of the SVE Stage. We have a talented director and a great president, Alan Lewis and a few “ wannabe” stars.

Please come and join us. The play has not been selected yet, but parts will be chosen with fi rst play practice in January. We meet on Monday at 10:00a.m. in the auditorium. Questions, call Connie Young, 357-2490

Red Hat SocietyHappy New Year! The Red Hatters of SVE will meet

on the following dates in 2016: Jan 27, Feb 24, March 23, April 27, May 25, June 22, Sept 28, Oct 26, & Nov 22. Come join us in the Mesa Verde room at 9:30 a.m. to socialize, meeting begins at 10:00 a.m. and we adjourn at 11:00 a.m. Don’t forget to bring a teacup & tea bag, refreshments are served by the host group.

Conservative ClubWe wish all our SVE neighbors a very Happy New Year –

2016! Our fi rst meeting this year is January 21st from 10 to 11a.m., in the Mesa Verde Room. Our special guest speaker is Senator Russell Pearce, former President of the Arizona Senate.

It is not the objective of the Conservative Club to tell you how or for whom to vote in this election year. In America that is a matter of your personal choice. We thoroughly enjoy examining each candidates program to consider the various pros and cons. This helps all of us vote more intelligently.

Come and check us out. We have lots of fun.

KNIT AND CROCHET GUILD

The SVE Knit and Crochet Guild has been busy knitting many hats and scarves for Sister Adele O’Sullivan who is a doctor at Circle the City Hospital which has 50 beds in the heart of Phoenix. She administers to homeless, sick patients (men and women). The Guild members shown delivering the hats are Elaine Rody, Pat Devers and Judy Lowam .

CERAMICS CLUBWelcome back to our winter

friends. We have lots of news to report. First, as a reminder, annual dues of fi ve dollars (a bargain) were due January 1.

Our Christmas luncheon was a hit! We had over twenty attendees. The food was tasty. Thank you to Sherry, Sue K and Genie for putting everything together. We loved the poinsettia door prizes. Drawing winners were Bonnie, Carol, Charlie, Diane, Jane, Joyce, Laurie, and Marie.

On December 5 our annual raffl e concluded at the pancake breakfast. Special thanks to all who purchased tickets to support our club’s activities. Of course, there were two lucky ticket holders. John Challender was the winner of the large bowl hand-painted with a fall leaf design. The winner of the Southwest style pots was Don V. Both gentlemen are SVE residents.

CLASS PROJECTS - January, February, and March are the most active months in Ceramics. Our instructor Debbie is kept busy on

Monday and Tuesday mornings assisting members with their individual projects. In addition, Debbie prepares class projects -- for example, December’s holiday snowman platter and October’s ice cream dishes. Our current class project is to decorate a soup bowl/mug which we will use at a soup luncheon to be held in February.

HORSE HAIR CLASSES - Once upon a time Native Americans developed a process for decorating pottery using the hairs from horses. Basically,

the idea is to burn the hairs on glowing hot pots straight from the kiln to create localized carbon markings. Each winter the Ceramics Club provides several opportunities for making horse hair pottery. We have tentatively (depending upon demand) scheduled classes for January 25, February 15, and March 14. If you would like to participate in a class, you need to sign up in the Ceramics Room. Prior to the Friday before the class your greenware needs to be prepared for the horse hair firing. Please note that each class is limited to 6-8 participants, each with 1-2 pieces.

Classes are held on Monday and Tuesday mornings from 9 a.m.-noon, in the Ceramics room. We have an instructor who is present to teach the classes. The cost is $5.00 per day. If you attend both Monday and Tuesday, the cost for the Tuesday class is $3.00. Our membership dues are $5.00 per year. For more information contact: Sherrie Larson, 480-822-7124 or Sue Kobiela 480-380-6909.

THE SUNSATIONALSHAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!

And the Sunsational Tappers hope your Christmas was Merry and Bright. May the year 2016 bring happiness, peace, health, and love your way.

Club members Sharon Duryea, Linda Peterson and Pat Soderberg presented SVE Manager, Lisa T itmas with a $500 check for use in Auditorium improvements.

We also enjoyed December with parades, parties, dancing and exchanging gifts. Pink is the new red with this tap dancing organization. The golf carts and bicycle in the SVE Parade were easy to spot – such artistry! They were decorated to the hilt and loaded with beautiful ladies – all in PINK! We hope you noticed the pink bicycle – driven by our Pat Soderberg – a perfect lead to the golf carts. Following the parade, the Sunsationals performed a tap number to “Sleigh Ride” in our SVE auditorium. They rocked the house! Friday, December 4th, Vickie Briscoe hosted her

annual Christmas Party. She is the perfect hostess – and cook! More festivities were enjoyed at the annual Sunsationals Christmas party and gift exchange in the Mesa Verde Room on December 18th. It is always fun to see which gifts will be “exchanged” the most often – usually it’s something pink! Some of the ladies were off to the east for the holidays, and others stayed in sunny Mesa to celebrate.

January will be back to practice – seriously – we are working double hard to pay for the extra pounds enjoyed in December!

In December, we had a lively and productive discussion of the compelling novel Still Alice by Lisa Genova, a neuroscientist. The story is unique in chronicling the progression of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease from the perspective of the victim, Alice Howland, a celebrated Harvard professor, fi fty-years old, and at the height of her career. The effects of the disease on Alice, her family, and colleagues are vividly described.

Readers learn that Alice’s worth is comprised of more than her ability to remember. All members agreed this was a “must-read” book.

Please join us on January 5, at 10:00 AM in the Saguaro Room for a discussion of Teacher Man by Frank McCourt. Maureen Urlaub will lead the discussion. New members are always welcome; we meet the fi rst Tuesday of the month.

DOGS R US

“Tuff ”

People decorate themselves with pins, necklaces, earrings, ties and bright clothing for Christmas and the New Year. “Tuffy” enjoys being part of that and is still wearing his pretty wreath for the New Year.

He is the precious 11-year-old Chihuahua, with maybe a little Terrier mixed in, living with Dee Koplin. Dee and her late husband adopted Tuffy when he was only a couple months old. Tuffy now has a bit of arthritis, but he gets around pretty well. There is no fence in Dee’s backyard, but early on Tuffy was taught the boundaries of the yard, and he has obeyed those boundaries ever since. To most dog owners, that would be a miracle! Good job, Dee!

Dog owners dote on their pets. They are your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are their life, their love, their leader. They will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of their heart. You owe it to them to be worthy of such devotion.

There are so many dogs needing to be adopted and to share their love and devotion with a human. Please consider adopting a pet for 2016.

SVE GENEALOGY CLUB

Gary VanValkenburgWe have an exceptional

speaker for our January meeting, Steve Packer. Steve is an experienced Genealogist who has put on presentations throughout the valley.

He is an expert on German Genealogy, lived in Germany for

a number of years and speaks and writes fl uent German. At our meeting January 20th he will discuss what is free for Genealogists on the internet.

Our November presentation by Katie Gertz on digitizing your artifacts was a great success. We all learned much. Our Christmas party in our December meeting was fun as always with lots of treats and good conversation.

Our speaker in our February meeting will be Al Stoner. Her topic is not yet determined but she always puts on an interesting and informative program.

If you would like your name added to our monthly email reminder list and receive PDF’s relating to all things Genealogy, come to our meetings in the Mesa Verde Room the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 9AM or contact Gary VanValkenburg at 480-361-5441.

SUNLAND STITCHERSFreda Klein

December was a very busy month for the quilters. Anita Rizzoli and Norma Brunick picked six names from the tree for the Boulder Creek School for gift giving, quickly obtained the gifts, wrapped and delivered in fast time. Thanks.

More donated fabric has come in from Belva Bull who has relocated to Everett,WA. Another huge donation of fabric and notions came from Elaina Rorack which will go into many more charity quilts. A donation from Pat Bleckinger of a bolt of fabric has been turned into tablecloths for the domino group. Sally Wise has given us six yards of homespun for many chenille pot holders. A BIG thanks to all these people.

Sue Shanley has announced several classes for January/February starting with a fabric

Christmas tree on a stand as a table decoration. The paint chip challenge is due for a showing this month, also later will be

a purse class and a wool applique session.

A secret luncheon menu for our Christmas party turned into pulled

pork or chicken on a bun along with mixed green, nuts,

seeds and cranberry salad, ambrosia salad

and for dessert a lot of mini cupcakes. Games were played with prizes for winners along with winners of the table decorations to

round out a productive and fun good year. The

party was hosted by Jan Carpenter, Flo Young, Sally

Wise, Twila Hall, and Eileen VeVea.

Thanks for the fun.

Santa and Father Time are on the way out. The Gals may be pushing for the future as the tournament against the Guys was an embarrassment (to the Gals.) The scores of fi ve, twenty minute games on four courts resulted in such an unbalanced tally the judges didn’t announce them. Well, just like the Cubs, ‘maybe next year.’ We all drowned

our sorrows and celebrated with pizza following the games.Regular league play will begin the fi rst Monday after the

New Year, January 4, 2016. Men play on Monday, women on Tuesday and mixed team play on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. All league play starts at 9:30 a.m. Open bocce will be available at 6:30 p.m. on all days but Tuesday and Friday. Tuesday starts at approximately 1:00 and Friday is a day off.

Looking forward to seeing y’all on the courts – we’ve missed the fun and camaraderie.

SVE Men’s Golf LeagueMike Kohrn

This month we welcome Tom Krings, Jon Elizondo, Gary Sondreal, Ora Smith, Gary Nytes, Randy Carlson, and Doug Eilers as new members to the SVE Men’s Golf Club.

Congratulations to Mike Ryan, club president, for his hole in one on par 3 hole #12. Rumor had it, he used a driver off the tee and banked the ball off two palm trees before the ball went into the hole. You know what they say about rumors, just not true. Good job, Mike

The club had their Road Runners (formally called the Desert Rats) versus Snowbirds tournament on Dec 7th and 9th. On the 7th, the Road Runners were in the lead 10 to 8. The 2nd day the score came in at 31 ½ Road Runners and 22 ½ Snowbirds. Better luck next year Snowbirds. The circle hole winners on hole #5 were John Anderson, Frank Bruno, Dennis Olson, Jerry Cartwright, Merl Haugestuen, Lon Kirkland, Dave Hall, Buddy MacDonald, Cliff Lowum, Jerry Hargis, and Dave Cink. Closest to the pin winners on hole #17 were Jerry Binfet and on hole #18 Buddy MacDonald. The longest putt winners on hole #8 were Jerry Bach and on hole #7 Bob Abbott. Good job, gentlemen. The Drawing winners were Hank Kraaenbrink, Al Jochim, and Mike Kohrn. The tournament was followed by lunch at Fat Willy’s.

We are in need of a few good men. If you haven’t heard of the SVE Men’s Golf League, please stop by the golf pro shop and talk to our friendly staff about eligibility requirements necessary to join the League. There are currently 224 active members in the men’s club. We play on Monday and Wednesday mornings. You can play when you choose, and you are not obligated to play every Monday or Wednesday. We offer handicap league play, so if you are just getting started or you are a pro, there is a fl ight for you to compete in with like opponents.

The next planned tournament is the Home and Home tournament with Sunland Village on Jan. 11th and 13th. There are also many other fun events planned throughout the year so come and join the group. It’s a great way to get some exercise and meet new friends in the village.

SVE COUPLES GOLFJudy Hileman

December was a busy month for the Couples Golf Club and we all had a boost to our holiday spirit through many activities! We started the month off on Tuesday, December 2 by participating in the Golf Cart Parade. Each year it exceeds the year before. What fun it was to see Santa, Mrs. Santa and Santa’s helpers this year, PLUS children along the route enjoying the festivities and picking up candy! Those utilitarian golf carts were wearing their Christmas best. Thanks to all who participated and especially our friends, Ardis and Bob Golay for taking charge of this event

Holiday fun continued on Tuesday, Dec. 8 with the singing of Christmas Carols throughout the village. This year members of the Chapel Choir and the Sunland Choir joined us as we spread Christmas Goodwill in the form of Christmas songs celebrating Christ’s birth.

The annual Christmas dinner/dance was held on Dec. 11 with a delicious buffet catered by AZ Premier Catering followed by a dance featuring Larry Charon. Thank you to our activities director, Sandy Ash and her committee for a festive evening with good friends, good food, and good music.

January will continue our busy routine with a potluck dinner and Karaoke on January 15. So get out those old favorite songs and tune up the vocal chords!

We are looking forward to a fun year here at SVE. Remember the golf socials are every Friday at 5:00 p.m. in the auditorium. Bring munchies to share and come on over!

SHUFFLEBOARD CLUB NEWS

Carleton MooreShuffl eboarders are bringing back the SLOPPY JOE LUNCH

fund raiser on Wednesday, January 27th in the auditorium from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Mark your calendars for this culinary event. It includes fun raffl es for prizes from local stores and restaurants. Buy the $6 tickets from Shuffl eboard Club members, the SVE front offi ce or at the door. Raffl e tickets can be purchased at the Lunch. This helps us buy our shuffl eboard supplies and equipment.

2016 is here and Shuffl eboard play is in progress at 10:00 am on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. Monday and Wednesday are open play and Saturday is in-park (SVE) league play, but there are a couple of boards for open play, too. Please come and give it a try or retry as the case may be. Come any or all days as you please. We are very happy to report we have picked up many new players.

The shuffl eborders were out in force to run the annual curbside Food Drive pickup led by Max Magnuson. THANKS to all of you who remembered to put out bags or take them to the offi ce. It was a great success! We collected many van loads of food.

Watch our bulletin board on the shuffl eboard court building for more activities and details. Our club president is Marion Yoder 656-4636.

The Sunland Village East Softball Club would like to invite all village residents to come to a dedication ceremony for our new scoreboard. In addition to some spirited softball game entertainment, there will be a short ceremony and free hotdogs, chips and cake, while supplies last. Soda pop and bottled water will be available for 50 cents. The ceremony, located at the softball fi eld, will be Monday, January 4 at 11:30 a.m.

Plan on coming out to join your neighbors to celebrate and have some fun!

Tennis TalkDiana Roskuski

We look forward to more residents participating in our beginner F.A.S.T. (Fun, Active, Senior Tennis) clinic at the courts on Saturday, January 9th; see the ½ page color ad in this January Outlook. This is a fun, free opportunity to try tennis!

More than half our 250 members started their tennis careers after retirement. If you miss the clinic, please come to the courts for beginner lessons on Tuesday, January 12th at 1 p.m.

The 2015 calendar year was completed with the SVE Tennis Club hosting seven other East Valley communities for the Holiday Mixed Doubles tournament, on December 28-30. This is the smaller of the two fundraising tournaments produced by our Club, and a rare opportunity to see the best senior men and women playing as a team.

At 9:00 a.m. on weekdays, SVE teams host other communities for League tennis. Residents are welcome to watch the play and enjoy a cup of coffee.

Nearly 100 members and guests enjoyed a Christmas dinner and show on December 4th at Barleen’s Arizona Opry. On December 12th the Club hosted players from Monte Vista for a fun day of tennis, snacks and lunch.

On December 19th, teaching pro Hank Brenner raised funds to purchase new bicycles for at-risk kids during his 2nd annual tennis marathon. Members donated $30 each to play with Hank during the marathon. His goal was to double the 46 bikes and helmets purchased last year!

Our annual Soup Night at the courts, with “round robin” play and dinner, is set for January 29th. The soups are always delicious, with enough variety to please every member.

Whether you are new to SVE, new to tennis, or just want to “get back in the game”, come to the courts and talk to one of our friendly players. Free lessons are offered for beginners and experienced players.
