Contacting Community Division Faculty

Please ask your private lesson and group class teachers how they would prefer for you to get in touch with them. Each teacher runs his/her studio a little differently, so you should find out what works best for him/her. General questions about the Suzuki program should be directed to Alexandra Hadden, Suzuki administrator, at [email protected]. Messages for Teri Einfeldt, the Suzuki Program Director, can be sent to [email protected].

Parking at Hartt and the UUC

University of Hartford Parking for our families having lessons/orchestra at the University of Hartford is available in Lot D.

8

Page 10: Suzuki - 2018 - hartford.edu Strings Handbook 2017 ... Guitar Coordinator Emmett ... The Hartt School Community Division 2 0 0 B l o o

In Lot D, please remember to park in regular spaces (i.e. not in faculty parking, visitor parking, commuter parking marked with red lines, or at the end of rows in unmarked areas). Public Safety will ticket cars that are not parked properly and/or cars that do not display a proper parking permit. Parents will be given directions by email in order to login to their University account and register your vehicle(s) on campus. Car registrations will be valid for one year, from September through August. In addition, please do not park in the designated drop-off/pick-up area in front the Community Division office on the campus road. Universalist Unitarian Church Parking Parking is located in the lot behind the church. Please only park in designated spaces. We realize that some days parking is extremely difficult. If the lot is full, you may find convenient street parking adjacent to the Church, or across the street on side streets. Please make every effort to cross the street safely with your child when parking on side streets. Failure to park in designated parking will result in your vehicle being towed at your expense.

Cell Phone/Computer-Free Zone in All Lessons and Groups

Turn off your cell phones, computers, and other devices with a screen. Your child(ren) and teachers need your undivided attention, and you need a break from multi-tasking. Your child will learn the value of what he/she is doing when you view it as an important enough activity not to allow interruptions. Don’t let your child catch you on your phone!

Program-Specific Attendance/Absence

General: No refunds will be given for classes/lessons missed by students.

Private Lessons: Students will receive makeup lessons for unplanned school closures and teacher absences. Teachers are not obligated to make up lessons or classes missed by students. Students are responsible for reserving their regularly scheduled lesson time during make-up weeks for teacher/weather related absences unless the teacher releases the student from those times. In lieu of one lesson each academic year, students in the Suzuki department participate in an Achievement Day evaluation program.

Group Classes and Orchestras: No refunds or makeups will be issued for student absence. Some ensembles and group classes have more specific policies regarding attendance; please consult relevant handbooks.

School Closings

Cancellation information will be announced on the Community Division home page and via email (if you are signed up for our newsletter). Please note that the Hartt Community Division will no longer notify radio and television stations of any closings. However, the University of Hartford may notify these stations independently of the HCD.

When the University of Hartford or any satellite of the Community Division is closed due to holidays or inclement weather, all lessons and activities at that site are canceled.

Additionally, the Community Division may choose to cancel its activities for the day independent of a University closure. Please be sure to check the HCD website for the most up to date information.

9

Page 11: Suzuki - 2018 - hartford.edu Strings Handbook 2017 ... Guitar Coordinator Emmett ... The Hartt School Community Division 2 0 0 B l o o

Announcements will be posted by 12:00 p.m. on weekdays, 6:30 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays for morning activities and by 12:00 p.m. for afternoon and evening activities. Additional notices will go out for special events as needed.

If you are concerned about weather-related issues, please contact the Community Division:

● Main Campus office, (860) 768-4451 ● Simsbury location, (860) 651-3570 ● Dance Department, (860) 768-6000

Rescheduling of Activities

When the Community Division is officially closed, private lesson teachers will make up lessons. Families should reserve their regularly scheduled time during the make-up week unless otherwise arranged. Ensembles, classes, and other group activities are not made up.

UUC Notes and Reminders

Here are some reminders, and some updated information, to help us all navigate things at the UUC in a successful manner.

Parking

We understand that it’s very difficult to tell where spaces are in the parking lot since the paint has mostly worn away. The UUC is in the process of a study about the parking lot and how it could be most safely and efficiently utilized. In the meantime, here are some guidelines to help us park effectively.

• The area in front of the glass-walled portico is a fire lane. Do not leave a car there without a driver.

• Parking spaces labeled “reserved” are just for church staff 24/7. Please do not use these for any reason.

• The reserved spaces are the closest spaces to the church building. Please DO NOT PARK closer to the building than the reserved spaces. These are part of the fire lane and driveway.

• In the middle row of the parking lot, the “first” space should be even with the first reserved space. Please do not park to the driver’s left of that spot as it impedes people from backing out of the spaces along the side.

There are about 50 parking spaces in the lot. During peak times, we could have as many as 75 families in the building just for group classes and orchestras! This means that it will always be necessary for some people to park on Fern St. or across the street on one of the perpendicular roads. Please allow extra time so that you can park/walk safely.

Inside the building

Please help your child(ren) to learn to walk in the hallways and rehearsal rooms.

The area available for cell phone use is by the bench near the nametags in the stairwell on the main level. Please do not talk on your phone in any other area inside the building.

There are families who are at the church for many hours at a time, and it may be necessary to feed children when they are there. Please make sure that:

• you do not use the kitchen facilities on either the main level or first floor

10

Page 12: Suzuki - 2018 - hartford.edu Strings Handbook 2017 ... Guitar Coordinator Emmett ... The Hartt School Community Division 2 0 0 B l o o

• you clean up after yourselves completely.

There are no areas of the church which are available for practicing.

We do not have permission to use any of the rooms beyond those in which we are teaching.

Please do not allow your child(ren) to practice in any part of the hallway on any level of the building. Even though we are mostly there after business hours, churches often have business at different times of day and we don’t want to accidentally disrupt a meeting.

Suzuki Information

Suzuki Philosophy

As stated on the Suzuki Association of the Americas website: www.suzukiassociation.org:

Every Child Can Learn More than fifty years ago, Japanese violinist Shinichi Suzuki realized the implications of the fact that children, the world over, learn to speak their native language with ease. He began to apply the basic principles of language acquisition to the learning of music, and called his method the mother-tongue approach. The ideas of parent responsibility, loving encouragement, constant repetition, etc., are some of the special features of the Suzuki approach. Parent Involvement As when a child learns to talk, parents are involved in the musical learning of their child. They attend lessons with the child and serve as “home teachers” during the week. One parent often learns to play before the child so that s/he understands what the child is expected to do. Parents work with the teacher to create an enjoyable learning environment. Early Beginning The early years are crucial for developing mental processes and muscle coordination. Listening to music should begin at birth; formal training may begin at age three or four, but it is never too late to begin. Listening Children learn words after hearing them spoken hundreds of times by others. Listening to music every day is important, especially listening to pieces in the Suzuki repertoire so the child knows them immediately. Repetition Constant repetition is essential in learning to play an instrument. Children do not learn a word or piece of music and then discard it. They add it to their vocabulary or repertoire, gradually using it in new and more sophisticated ways. Encouragement As with language, the child’s effort to learn an instrument should be met with sincere praise and encouragement. Each child learns at his/her own rate, building on small steps so that each one can be mastered. Children are also encouraged to support each other’s efforts, fostering an attitude of generosity and cooperation.

11

Page 13: Suzuki - 2018 - hartford.edu Strings Handbook 2017 ... Guitar Coordinator Emmett ... The Hartt School Community Division 2 0 0 B l o o

Learning with Other Children In addition to private lessons, children participate in regular group lessons and performance at which they learn from and are motivated by each other. Graded Repertoire Children do not practice exercises to learn to talk, but use language for its natural purpose of communication and self-expression. Pieces in the Suzuki repertoire are designed to present technical problems to be learned in the context of the music rather than through dry technical exercises. Delayed Reading Children learn to read after their ability to talk has been well established. In the same way, children should develop basic technical competence on their instruments before being taught to read music.

Private Lessons

Hartt Suzuki Program Private Lesson Expectations

The Hartt Suzuki Program requires active and supportive parent participation; including mandatory attendance at all lessons and a willingness to serve as the child's at-home teacher. Parent Involvement Suzuki involves a commitment of time and effort from parents!

The student and parent both attend lessons every week. In the private lesson, student, parent, and teacher work together to help the child acquire the skills needed for the instrument. At lessons the parent observes and takes notes to be sure the home practices support what is learned in the private lesson. During home practice, the parent helps the child review and practice the material assigned.

Parents also provide the vital element of encouragement in Suzuki. When a young child first says “ma-ma,” our reaction is one of pleasure. We never say, “Is that all you can say?” This basic truth is why family support is so important. Positive encouragement keeps the child aiming high and working hard.

Listening Listening to recordings every day creates a nurturing musical environment for a child. It is particularly important to include Suzuki repertoire in daily listening; the child then becomes familiar with the pieces prior to learning them by ear on the instrument. If your child is having trouble finding the notes to their pieces, play the recording even more!

Repetition Children do not learn a word and then discard it. They add it to their vocabulary by repetition and gradually begin to use it in new and more sophisticated ways. The same is true of learning to play an instrument.

General 1. Students/Parents of the Hartt Suzuki Program are expected to attend all designated private lesson

dates listed on the 2016 - 2017 Calendar, or as arranged with your private instructor. 2. Students/Parents are expected to demonstrate behavior that will facilitate their learning. Specifically,

students are expected to be courteous, polite, and respectful of the teacher and parent. 3. Students/Parents are responsible to purchase in a timely manner and bring all materials necessary to

their lessons as specified by their teacher. Lessons

1. Students should plan to have their instruments unpacked and be ready to begin each lesson with all necessary materials before the lesson time is scheduled to start. This means getting to the lesson early so that the student can wash their hands and/or use the facilities, and getting their instruments ready in a calm manner independent of the parent. It is important for the student to have this transition time to prepare him/herself for the lesson.

2. Students should enter the room quietly once invited by the teacher and go directly to the lesson spot. If the student has written materials (etude books, note reading books, etc.) they should bring them to the stand in anticipation of using them.

3. There should only be ONE TEACHER in the lesson. Sit back and enjoy watching your child(ren) learn. If there is a time during the lesson that the parent feels they must interject. please wait for a natural break in which to do so. Unless it’s critical, try to hold all questions for the few minutes at the end of the

13

Page 15: Suzuki - 2018 - hartford.edu Strings Handbook 2017 ... Guitar Coordinator Emmett ... The Hartt School Community Division 2 0 0 B l o o

lesson time. If the question is a complex one, perhaps wait for the next lesson and ask in the beginning of the lesson or send your teacher an email during the week. Your instructor will attempt to save two to three minutes at the end of the child’s lesson to allow for questions and for the next student to transition into the lesson room.

4. Unless directly related to what is going on in the lesson please turn off all cell phones/computers/digital devices that may distract you from the lesson. Your child and your teacher need your undivided attention.

Attendance Policy

General

No refunds will be given for classes missed by students.

Private Lessons Students will receive makeup lessons for unplanned school closures and teacher absences. Teachers are not obligated to make up lessons or classes missed by students. Students are responsible for reserving their regularly scheduled lesson time during make-up weeks unless the teacher releases the student from those times. In lieu of one lesson each academic year, students in the Suzuki department participate in an Achievement Day evaluation program. Solo Recitals Several times a semester there are scheduled solo recitals at the University of Hartford. To perform on a Suzuki Solo Recital, a student must be invited by his/her teacher to perform. You are "auditioning" for this opportunity in every lesson! Once your private lesson teacher has asked your child to perform, be sure to sign up for a rehearsal with the pianist as soon as possible. (See “Practice with Frank”, below) Your child’s comfort level can greatly be increased by planning a rehearsal well in advance of the recital. Also, should another rehearsal be needed there will be time to rehearse again. “Practice with Frank” Frank is available to practice for Suzuki solo recitals during the week at the Unitarian Universalist Church (UUC) on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons from 4:00 – 4:50 and on Thursday afternoons from 5:00 – 5: 30, and on Saturday mornings at The Hartt School from 8:00 – 10:00. To schedule a rehearsal, please either:

● ask your teacher to sign you up when you are discussing playing on a recital in your lesson ● call the Hartt Community Division office at (860) 768-4451 ● see Frank before or after group class

Rehearsals times fill up quickly the week of and the week prior to recitals, so please plan ahead as Frank is often not able to schedule additional rehearsal times. Be sure to arrive prepared for your rehearsal. In addition to practicing your part, you should be listening to recordings of the piece and making sure your memory is solid. Also, you should always have your music and a

14

Page 16: Suzuki - 2018 - hartford.edu Strings Handbook 2017 ... Guitar Coordinator Emmett ... The Hartt School Community Division 2 0 0 B l o o

pencil with you so that you (or your parent) can take notes. Lastly, if your piece is not in the Suzuki books or is not being played in a group class, you must bring your accompaniment with you. Especially when practicing at the UUC, please wait patiently, quietly, and respectfully in the hallway until it is your turn. At both the UUC and Hartt you should also plan to arrive a little early so that you can unpack your instrument in the hallway prior to your rehearsal. On days when Frank’s schedule is full, he wants to be sure to spend as much time as possible playing your piece during your rehearsal time. And while Frank tries his hardest to stay on schedule, that is often not the case – and for various reasons, some of which are out of his control. If you know you have to be somewhere at a particular time, please do not sign up for a rehearsal time immediately prior to your commitment as there is a chance that he will run late. For example, if you have a 9:00 lesson on Saturday morning, it would be best not to sign up for an 8:50 rehearsal time. Solo Recital Performance Attire Performers are asked to dress as though they were going to a wedding or nice event: dress slacks, nice shirt and/or blouse, and dress shoes. It is not required that girls wear skirts or dresses, but if they do, the bottom of the skirt should be no more than one inch above the knee. It is strongly requested that students do not wear jeans or sneakers. Achievement Days Performances Suzuki private lesson students participate yearly in Achievement Days, a performance and evaluation opportunity. This year’s Achievement Days will be announced. During this week there will be no regular lessons, groups, or orchestras. In lieu of one lesson each year, students who are near the end of Book 1 or above are scheduled for a time to perform for several members of the Suzuki faculty. Written feedback will be provided, along with positive comments from fellow students who are scheduled for the same time. More information will be provided in your private lessons as the time approaches. Participants are asked to treat this performance as any other performance and dress according to the guidelines listed for Solo Recital Performance Attire.

Hartt Suzuki Group Class Program Student Expectations

Parents are expected to attend all group lessons and orchestra rehearsals at the UUC. If this is not possible, they must have an adult other than the teacher responsible for their child at all times both for safety and medical reasons. General 1. Students of the Hartt Suzuki Program are expected to attend all designated rehearsal and performance dates listed on the 2017 - 2018 Private Lesson Calendar. If additional rehearsals and/or performances are required, they will be communicated well in advance. Students are not expected to attend rehearsals on religious holidays or that are in conflict with school music performances. It is the responsibility of the student and/or parent to communicate these instances with the teacher in advance. Students who miss more than two group classes before a concert may be asked not to perform. 2. Students are responsible to bring all materials necessary to their classes and performances as specified in this handbook or by their teacher. 3. Students are expected to demonstrate behavior that will facilitate both their learning as well as everyone else’s around them. This is especially important in group classes and performances. Specifically, students are expected to be courteous, polite, and respectful of other students and adults. Classes 1. Students must plan to have their instruments unpacked and be ready to begin each class with all necessary materials before the time it is scheduled to start. 2. Violinists in Vivace, Aria, and Opus group classes as well as violists in the Tour Group should bring a stand and a sharpened pencil to each group class. Cellists should bring a sharpened pencil to each group class. 3. Students should not ask to be excused to visit the restroom or water fountain unless it is an emergency. Drinks and restroom trips should be taken care of before class begins or after it ends. 4. Students must be attentive to all directions and follow them quickly. Any questions should be communicated with the teachers before or after class. 5. Students are responsible for preparing for class by reviewing and working on any special assignments as specified by the teacher. 6. Students who miss more than or the last two rehearsals before a concert may be asked not to perform. Performances 1. Students should arrive to the concert venue 20 minutes before the start of the concert and must be in place 5 minutes prior to the designated time. 2. Drinks and restroom trips should be taken care of before the students are expected to arrive. 3. Concert Dress/Uniforms must be worn for all group and orchestra performances unless otherwise specified. Students who do not dress appropriately will not be allowed to perform. Group Class Dates Group classes follow the the Hartt Community Division Private Lesson Calendar (included in this handbook). Regular rehearsals will NOT take place during make up weeks, college audition dates marked with an asterisk (*), or holidays.

Attendance Policy Attendance and active participation at all rehearsals/classes is crucial to the success of any organization. It is expected that all members will demonstrate responsibility, punctuality, and dependability as part of their commitment to the organization. If a student knows that he/she will have to be absent from a rehearsal /class, he/she should contact both his/her private teacher and group class teacher. Group class is a vital part of our Suzuki Program and attendance is required from all Suzuki students. Excessive absences are unacceptable and may result in the student being referred to a teacher in the traditional department. Concert Admission All concerts require a general admission ticket; including both Suzuki Orchestra and Group Class performances. Tickets are free of charge and may be reserved online at www.harttweb.hartford.edu or by calling the University Box Office at (860) 768-4228. The Box Office, located in the lobby of Lincoln Theater, is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tickets may be requested up to six weeks in advance and are also available at the door beginning one hour prior to each event. All persons regardless of age require a ticket for entrance; this includes lap infants and toddlers. We recommend reserving tickets in advance to prevent disappointment.

Performance Attire

The appearance of the group classes and orchestras is a vital component of a polished performance. Appropriate concert dress is one way that performers can show respect for their audience. It is the parent's responsibility to make sure their children are dressed appropriately in their uniforms for every performance, unless otherwise specified. If you have any questions about the information below, please ask your private lesson or group class teachers for further clarification. Members of the Hartt Suzuki Group Class Program are required to purchase uniforms as indicated below. Uniforms must be worn for all group class performances unless otherwise specified. All parents are responsible for placing their own uniform orders. Please allow at least 6 weeks for delivery prior to the first performance. The submission of a signed registration form indicates agreement to the calendar and attendance policy listed in this handbook. It also indicates that the student and his/her parents have read the handbook, looked at the yearly calendar, and are willing to make a commitment to the organization for the coming year. A student who does not fulfill his/her commitment to the organization may jeopardize current and future membership in the organization. Attendance Policy Attendance and active full participation at rehearsals and classes is crucial to the success of any organization. It is expected that all students will demonstrate responsibility, punctuality, and dependability as part of their commitment to the ensemble. If a student knows that he/she will have to be absent from a rehearsal or class, he/she must let the manager know in advance. In the case of illness, members are expected to email their respective manager (email above). Students are permitted three absences per concert cycle. Excessive absence (more than three times per semester) is not acceptable and may result in dismissal without refund for tuition and fees. If students must exceed three absences per semester, they must contact the conductor directly and apply for an additional absence. Should this application be declined, the student must attend the rehearsal or will be asked to resign from their place in the ensemble without refund for tuition and fees. All absences (either planned or unplanned) count towards the student’s absence count for the semester. Withdrawal Policy Please note: Absence does not constitute a withdrawal from any program. A signed registration form constitutes agreement to pay tuition in full, regardless of how much has actually been paid at the time of withdrawal. All students register for an entire academic year (September through June) and tuition and fees are assessed for the full academic year. Tuition may be prorated for students who begin become members after the start of the academic year. Absence and/or verbal notice is not sufficient for withdrawal notification. All requests for withdrawal must be made in writing to the Registrar. Withdrawal at any time is subject to the following program-specific penalties: Ensembles, Choirs and Group Classes: Withdrawal prior to the 1st rehearsal/class -$30 cancellation fee Withdrawal received prior to October 1st, 2016 -Partial penalty based on the number of rehearsals/classes held plus a $30 cancellation fee Withdrawal on or after October 1st, 2016** -Full year tuition penalty **Note: there are no mid-year withdrawals for Ensembles, Choirs and Group classes. Students will be responsible for the full tuition after October 1st, 2016, plus any applicable fees associated with their account. Please see our Academic Year 2016-2017 Policies packet for more information regarding Billing, Medical Withdrawals, and Delinquent Accounts.
