She always liked riding on a bike whenshe was a kid. Then she eventually movedup to riding a motorcycle as she got older. Iteven turned out to be a nice thing when shemet Will after she had finished her collegedegree. They actually used the bikeas a measure of their caring for oneanother. It was like who drove themotorcycle and sat behind as ameasure of which one was incharge of that particular day intheir lives.

They cared for each other andeven when dealing in business withothers. It showed in the way theybounced off each other when they were outsocially. It really was a beautiful thing tosee. Unfortunately life’s negatives some-times sticks its nose into bliss. He camedown with the big “C” and within 20months he was gone.

Fortunately she worked for a fine firmthat helped her to put her life back together. After a while she tried to deal with hersocial life and that was a very rough one. At

the start she thought that maybe she couldfind someone who liked riding the bikes. However, it seemed that any of the ones shemet looked and acted as if they were part ofthose vicious groups even though the wereordinary ones with five-day- weekly jobs.Put them on a bike on the weekend and sud-denly they tried to act like a biker of the

“Me Tarzan and you Jane” vari-ety. This had made her socialdates not of the kind she wanted.

She recently met a nice guythrough a friend. He didn’t owna bike but did own a boat. Eventhough it was a negative as towhat they would do when outsocially, it was worth a try to goout with him on the boat.

All of a sudden this mild guybecame a boat captain showing off hisprowess and even to ordering her how tohandle the duties of a mate. She found it abit different for herself and resentful of theskipper of the boat as she did the secondarywork. After all she straightened out her latehubby and why couldn’t she enjoy doing itto her boat captain? Almost like having toride on the back of the bike but a challengeto move to the front.

Thanks to the city’s finan-cial strength, Sunny IslesBeach can afford to giveresidents the gift of “thehighest quality of life” year-round. The city’s budgetfunds everything from capi-tal improvements to cultural

events – but wouldn’t it be nice if gifts likethese could also be on the city’s list…

STAIRMASTERS AND TREADMILLS – The city has a convenient shuttle bus sys-

tem and very comfortable bus benches – butit would be great if cardio equipment couldalso be acquired so while waiting for the busto come, you could get in a quick workout! This innovative exercise initiative wouldsurely help make Sunny Isles Beach one ofthe “fittest” model cities in America!

UNLIMITED TEXT MESSAGING – City parks already have free WiFi, but if it

was also free for people to send unlimitedtext messages about how wonderful life is inSunny Isles Beach, it could be the marketingcoup of the millennium! The only catch is,everyone would have to learn new text mes-saging acronyms like: WYWHISS (wishyou were here instead of shoveling snow);MTIBTY (my tan is better than yours); andDYWYCWTTB? (don’t you wish you couldwalk to the beach?)

VIDEO IPODS – It would also be well worth the expendi-

ture if the city bought thousands of videoiPods to distribute around the world - play-ing nothing but documentaries about how

wonderful it is to live and vacation in SunnyIsles Beach – Florida’s Riviera. The CityManager could even apply for a publicitygrant from Apple to help pay for the effort todownload a never-ending stream of evenmore residents and visitors!

TICKETS TO BASEBALL GAMES – If the city invested in purchasing Marlins

season tickets for all residents, this couldhelp increase attendance at the new stadiumnext season. Then to show appreciation, theteam could agree to help coach little lea-guers at Pelican Community Park or evendecide to change their name again from theMiami Marlins to the Sunny Isles BeachMarlins!

GAS REBATES – Instead of lowering property tax millage

rates when budget revenues increase, thecity could fund gasoline rebates so everyonescrounging for loose change under theirsofas could afford to keep paying pumpedup prices…Better yet, the city could mone-tarily reward residents who start taking thecity’s shuttle bus and give up driving to helpalleviate traffic on Collins Avenue.

ICE CREAM FOR EVERYONE – Even though it’s cold up north, it still

feels like summer in South Florida and stud-ies show heat can often lead to “hot tem-pers” and an increase in crime. So to keepthings calm, cool and collected in SunnyIsles Beach, the city should consider creat-ing a great gift entitled “Ice CreamSundays.” Once a week on Sundays, all res-idents and visitors would be invited to enjoyfree ice cream to perpetuate the city’s repu-tation for being home of “the sweet life!”

Standing Tall at the Wall‘11-11-11’

Today is our memorial Veterans DayThe USA recognizes patriotic service in many ways.

Calvin Coolidge said it well – as we are begotten“The nation which forgets its defenders will be itself forgotten.”

And so, we cheer Sunny Isles BeachBecause, while honoring Vets, they also teach….

The lesson being, if evil dictators force a fightA strong military can show its might and make it right.

So on this day of 11-11-11We cast our eyes to the heavens

Standing at attention in Heritage Park at 10:00 AMWe loyally dedicate this veterans Memorial with an AMEN.

Our City honors those American Veterans who are aliveWe additionally praise those heroic soldiers who did not survive.

So always be loyal to the Vets of the USAThey have preserved our freedom in many ways.

Sing our anthem “God Bless America,” home of the braveBecause America’s legacy from our Veterans

Is our world that they saved.

A recent front page story reported atouching story about a female humpbackwhale that had become entangled in a webof crab pots and lines. She was weigheddown by hundreds of pounds of these trapsand by hundreds of yards of lines that werewrapped tightly, completely around herbody including her tail. There was even aline that was entangled in her mouth. Shewas struggling just to stay afloat.

She was spotted near the Golden GateBridge by a fisherman who called for help. When a rescue team arrived from an envi-ronmental group, they decided that the bestand perhaps the only way to save her wasfor the members of the team to dive intothe water and begin to untangle her byhand. They worked for hours with specialcurved knives and eventually they wereable to free her.

When she was free, the divers say thatthe whale swam in what seemed like joy-ous circles. She then came back to eachand every diver, one at a time, and nudgedthem, and pushed them gently around asshe was thanking them.

Some said it was the most incredible andbeautiful experience of their lives. The rescuer who cut the rope out of hermouth said that her eyes were followinghim the entire time. He said it was a life-alter-ing experience and he will never be the same.

There is a lesson to be learned thisThanksgiving Day from that whale. Shecould have left after she was freed but shedidn’t. She made sure that everyone whowas part of her rescue received an individ-ual expression of her gratitude. If animalscan be thankful and show their apprecia-tion, it behooves human beings to do thesame to each other. There is no questionthat at some time in your life, you too wererescued by the kindness of others. You mayeven owe someone your life. Take this Dayto say, “Thank you.”

The presidential candidate pleaded for“greater civility in political discourse by boththe media and the political parties.” Thosewere not the words of Herman Cain concerningrecent allegations, but were said by AndrewJackson, during the poisonous, scurrilous pres-idential campaign in 1828.

According to presidential historian WilliamA. DeGregorio, at age 17, a vivacious RachelDonelson married and lived with LewisRobards in Kentucky. “Insanely jealous,Robards wrongfully accused Rachel of infideli-ties with other men. Despite her pleas of inno-cence, he ordered Rachel to return to her familyin Nashville, Tennessee until he called for her.”Soon after Rachel rejoined her mother, now awidow, Jackson arrived in Nashville to practicelaw and became a boarder at the Donelsonhome. Eventually Rachel and Jackson fell inlove, however, “when Robards came toNashville to claim Rachel, she dutifully

returned with him to Kentucky. Rachel soonfound Robards had done nothing to curb hisrages of jealousy. When told of her unhappiness,Jackson raced to Kentucky and rescued her.”

In December 1790, at Robards request, “thestate legislature passed an enabling act permit-ting him to sue for divorce. Mistaking this pre-liminary action for a final divorce decree,Jackson, who as a lawyer should have knownbetter, married Rachel.” Robards then suedRachel for divorce on the grounds of adulterywith Jackson; the final decree issued inSeptember 1793. A furious Jackson and a mor-tified Rachel then learned that their marriagewas not legal. They immediately remarried in1794 but that did not end their troubles.“Scurrilous attacks on Rachel’s character poi-soned the presidential campaign of 1828.”Although Jackson tried to keep the vicious, scandalous charges away from his wife,Rachel, with previous heart trouble, realizedshe was being “raked over in the nationalpress.” Rachel became depressed, grew ill anddied suddenly on December 22, 1828. Jackson, who defeated President John Quincy Adams, held his political opponents responsible for herdeath. At her burial, President-elect Jacksonvowed, “I can and do forgive all my enemiesbut all those vile wretches who slandered hermust look to God for mercy.”

“YOUR AD HERE — BIGYELLOW SCHOOL BUS”

BY KAREN ARONOWITZ,President, United Teachers of Dade

Imagine the yellow school busso covered with ads that wesmack right into the back of one,our attention diverted by 3D,strobe-lit, hologram movie ads, flashing, pulsing lights for caf-feine-laden power drinks, logo-encrusted sportswear, and othertrinkets and trash we sell to moveour economy. It’s the Americanway! All supposedly G-rated,although what passes for G in ouroverly sexualized consumerismmakes the letter blush like a scar-let A.Still, our schools are so cash-

strapped from the decrease infunding to public education thatschool boards are putting out thefor-sale sign themselves. Nospace need be uncovered. Willstudents pay any attention to thework teachers place on whiteboards, smart boards, or, in a fewimpoverished public schools, chalk boards, when bells andwhistles from advertisers competefor their attention? It is not philanthropy that drives

companies into our schools. It’s

the thrill of a captive audience, anaudience that will have noParental Control button to screenwhat’s seen in a school, an audi-ence that is just learning to thinkabout the the credibility of asource, an audience that, by ageand maturity, will believe what isplaced before them. One does notchallenge authority until enoughlearning has taken place. We willabandon four-year olds and four-teen-year-olds to the hands ofadvertisers.

I suppose the next step is tomake each teacher responsible forselling enough advertising to“endow” their position. A sort ofcommission sales requirement toadd to the idea of “pay-for-per-formance.”It’s not surprising that the hal-

lowed halls of our schools will beturned into the inside of a casino, where the lights are low, there areno windows or clocks so that noone knows whether it’s night orday, and flashing, strobing lights, bells and whistles convince eventhe losers they’ve won.Lock up your children, folks.

Throw them an iPad, a Twinkie, and a bottle of water and call ithome schooling. You might notbe there, but it could be a saferspace than school.

The United Teachers of Dade rep-resents 35,000 teachers and schoolsupport personnel in MDCPS. Theunion is committed to being aleader in creating public schoolreform, fostering a quality publiceducation for all students and ele-vating the professional status ofteachers, paraprofessionals, officeemployees, and all school supportpersonnel.

request for transfer of development rights(TDR’s) to Porsche Design Residences, owner of the property at 18555 CollinsAvenue (the Golden Nugget site), for a 57-story, 132-unit condominium buildingpromised to be “the jewel in the crown ofSunny Isles Beach” and “the top of the top.”

Anticipated to be a catalyst for elevatingproperty values throughout the city,Porsche Design Tower will feature a revo-lutionary, ocean view glass elevator systemheralded as “the first of its kind” takingresidences, still inside their cars, directlyup to their unit and designated roboticparking space.

According to developer Gil Dezer, “Thetower is being designed by Germany-basedPorsche Design Group and The SiegerSuarez Architectural Group. The Dezersand architect Charles Sieger, have alreadybuilt and designed some of the most suc-cessful and luxurious oceanfront develop-ments in Sunny Isles Beach includingTrump Palace, Trump Royale and TrumpInternational Hotel.”

During a presentation of schematics tothe City Commission, the cylinder-shapedtower was described as having a “clean, slick, elegant, timeless design” and veryunique state-of-the-art features. The futur-istic elevator parking system actually lift-ing residents and their cars directly to their

front doors was designed by project tech-nology partners including Otis ElevatorCompany, the world’s largest manufacturerof people-moving products; and Wohr, oneof Germany’s leading manufacturers of carparking systems.

The ultra-luxurious condo “palaces”ranging from 3,800 to over 9,500 squarefeet with spectacular ocean views and opu-lent amenities such as swimming pools onterraces and fireplaces may sell for asmuch as $9 million.

“Porsche Design residences represent themerging of Porsche Design technology; theoutstanding architectural plans of SiegerSuarez; and the Dezers’ proven expertise inmarketing luxury oceanfront condomini-ums within a project that will lead SunnyIsles Beach forward in the new economicrealities of this decade,” Dezer says.

“Porsche Design is the forerunner of thenew type of Sunny Isles Beach develop-ment that will generate millions of dollarsin real estate tax revenues and disposableincome to support the many city servicesprovided to Sunny Isles Beach residents. The Porsche Design development teamintends to break ground in early 2012 withthe demolition of the existing GoldenNugget building.”

During the Commission meeting, it wasnoted terms included in the resolution

approving the Porsche Design project includedeveloper contributions totaling nearly $4million for amenities benefitting the commu-nity including beach access easements; com-patibility with Collins Avenue streetscapedesigns; and a 10,000 square foot publicoceanfront park. Mayor Norman S. Edelcupnoted, “This is a landmark project and welook forward to seeing another great buildingfrom the Dezer family in Sunny Isles Beach.”

‘PAVING THE WAY’ In an effort to be proactive and pave the

way for the most desirable new develop-ments in Sunny Isles Beach, the CityCommission recently passed an ordinanceintended to help perpetuate prosperity.

Mayor Edelcup emphasized, “The city isn’twaiting for the Federal government to bringstimulus [for new development]…We’re tak-ing positive steps to bring new, wonderful con-struction back to our beautiful city.”

At the Nov. 17 City Commission, anordinance passed on second reading pro-viding for transferring building heightswithin the Sunny Isles Boulevard south-edge street type within the Town CenterDistrict; and amending a section of theMixed Use-Resort District (MU-R) tomodify Floor Area Ratio bonuses, establishFederal Aviation Administration restric-tions as height limitations [increasing from

a maximum of 550 feet to 649 feet]; and topermit connecting bridges between certainadjacent properties.

Attorney Cliff Schulman representingthe Trump Group [of Williams Islandfame] explained, “None of these changesadd density or intensity…it allows largerunits and gives architects added flexibility. The Trump Group [is planning to develop]The Mansions of Acqualina with averageunit sizes of 4,000 square feet and 8,000square foot penthouses - so there will be asignificant improvement in tax revenuescollected by the city. A skywalk to integrate[the existing Acqualina tower with the newbuilding is also being designed].”

‘ELEVATING SALES’ Overall, the South Florida condo boom

has generated nearly $4.1 billion in devel-oper sales of newly created units in SunnyIsles Beach as of Sept. 30, 2011, accordingto a CondoVultures.com study reporting:“Between 2003 and the third quarter of2011, developers sold more than 9.2 mil-lion square feet of condo space in SunnyIsles Beach.

Since 2003, developers have brought 27developments with nearly 6,400 units tothe Sunny Isles Beach market; and prior tothe boom, developers built nearly 60 proj-ects with 12,000 units in the city.

BY DEBBIE WASSERMANCongresswoman

Each November, we gather together tohonor all of the American soldiers whohave defended our great nation over thecourse of our 235-year history. Since ournation’s founding, men and women haveanswered their country’s call to service anddefended the principles of liberty espousedin our Constitution and Declaration ofIndependence.

It is only fitting that the same month inwhich we celebrate Thanksgiving we alsocelebrate those who served our country inuniform.

Just as we must never forget their serv-ice and sacrifice, we must also stand firm inour commitment to help veterans as theyreturn to civilian life. As the Iraq war drawsto a close this year and as we begin to tran-sition from Afghanistan, our nation willwelcome even more of these brave men andwomen to the already 23 million veterans inAmerica.

In Florida alone there are more than 1.6million veterans, and as our men andwomen return home, we must ensure thatthey have access to the help they need totransition to civilian life, whether it is find-ing a job or securing health care and hous-ing, or just getting back into the daily rou-tine of family life.

After serving our country honorablyand courageously, the last thing our veter-ans should have to worry about when theyfinally come home to their loved ones iswhether or not they will be able to find ajob. That is why I am proud to be acosponsor of H.R. 1941, the Hiring HeroesAct of 2011, which would help get veteransback to work. I also applaud PresidentBarack Obama’s expanded commitment toalleviate unemployment among our veter-ans, and to support our military families.

The President recently announced newcommitments to service members and vet-erans as part of a comprehensive plan tolower veteran unemployment. This planincludes:* Returning Heroes and Wounded WarriorTax Credits within the American Jobs Actfor businesses that hire unemployed veter-ans and veterans with service-connecteddisabilities. These tax credits would beworth up to $5,600 and $9,600, respective-ly, reducing the cost for businesses to hire aveteran.

* The Department of Labor initiated a newonline resource: My Next Move forVeterans, which links veterans with civilianjobs for which they are well qualified.* The Obama Administration has alsolaunched the Veterans Job Bank, a NationalResource Directory, which is an easy-to-use tool to help veterans find job postingsfrom companies looking to hire them.

Right here in Florida we need to worktogether to encourage South Florida busi-nesses to make hiring veterans a greater pri-ority. Earlier this month, I met with JohnAlfano of Pembroke Pines, the president ofDoris Italian Market & Bakery, and GregRamos of Weston, the owner of Sources4,and we talked about the American Jobs Actand how tax credits for hiring veteranscould help them expand their businesses. With these recent announcements, now thiscan become a win-win reality for smallbusinesses looking to expand and veteranslooking for employment.

To help South Florida veterans lookingfor work, I’ll be co-hosting a Jobs Fair forveterans with Congressman Ted DeutchSaturday, Dec. 3, at the Fort LauderdaleArmory from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.Veterans and military families will be ableto learn more about employment opportuni-ties in the area and have a chance to meetwith potential employers. We will alsohave people on hand to talk about how toenroll in the VA health system and learnabout educational opportunities and otherbenefits.

America’s brave men and women inuniform should be able to count on the fulland unwavering support of their govern-ment, whether they are active duty, orreturning to civilian life. We must honortheir service and give back to those whofought to protect the freedoms we enjoy inthe United States of America.

I am proud to be an advocate for thepeople of South Florida, and my office isalways open to you. The “Boss” is back, and it’s every bit asgood as the original!

I’m talking about the legendary Boss 302Mustang that first appeared in 1969 billedas “the best all-around road-going perform-ance machine ever created by Ford MotorCompany.” Now, 43 years later, Ford engi-neers have crafted another one.

The 2012 Boss 302 in essence is a re-engineered 2011 Mustang GT, with theacceleration, handling, braking and topspeed all equally matched for perfect bal-ance and excellent handling. It is a factory-built racecar that is equally efficient as anevery day street car.

For power, the new Boss 302 has thesame 5.0 liter 412 hp engine that pow-ers the Mustang GT, but with intakeand camshaft revisions that bring it upto 444 hp and 380 pounds-feet oftorque, yet delivering a smooth idleand low-end torque for comfortable

around-town driving.It has a race-inspired clutch with upgrad-

ed friction materials and a short-throw,close-ratio six-speed manual transmission.Power is delivered to a 3.73 ratio rear axleusing carbon fiber plates in the limited-slipdifferential to improve torque handling andlongevity.

All Boss models are lowered by 11 mil-limeters at the front and one millimeter inthe rear. At the same time, the suspensionsystem has been further refined and givenhigher-rate coil springs on all four corners, stiffer suspension bushings, a larger-diame-ter rear stabilizer bar, and adjustable shocksand struts.

Working in concert with the suspensionupgrades, the new Boss 302 has unique, lightweight 19-inch black alloy racingwheels in staggered widths — 9 inches upfront, 9.5 inches in the rear. The PirelliPZero summer tires are sized specificallyfor each end of the vehicle, with the frontwheels getting 255/40ZR-19 tires and therear getting wider 285/35ZR-19 rubber. The combined power, suspension and tirepackage lets the new Boss clock a scream-ing top speed of 155 mph.

Changes to the Mustang Boss exteriorare subtle, but evoke the 1969 Boss in a

contemporary way. Each new Boss haseither a black or white roof panel, coordi-nated to the color of the side C-stripe, whileexterior colors are offered in CompetitionOrange, Performance White, Kona BlueMetallic, Yellow Blaze Tri-Coat Metallicand Race Red.

The unique fascia and grille are high-lighted by the blocked-off fog lampopenings and aggressive lower splitterdesigned to manage the air under andaround the car at high speeds to reducedrag and front-end lift, while forcing airthrough the cooling system. The rearspoiler complements the front aero treat-

ment and minimizes overall drag. The interior also is pure Boss, keyed by

a dark metallic instrument panel finish, gauge cluster and door panel trim, optionalRecaro bucket seats, a black pool-cueshifter ball and “Powered by Ford” door sillplates.

Pricing on the 2012 Mustang Boss 302starts at $41,105.
