PRECISE, EFFICIENT AND VERSATILE

The new Sutton MK-V Light Alloy extrusion press series comes with state-of-the-art design solutions for top-notch front loading extrusion presses: the linear bearing guided components guarantee maximum precision, while the laminated tie rod design ensures a highly rigid press frame, offering significant advantages with regard to both longitudinal rigidity and anti-tilt stability. The billet loader is operated entirely using energy-efficient high-speed electric servo motors. Productivity is further increased by short dead cycle times and long billet capacities. What’s more, the MK-V Light Alloy is highly versatile: a change from left hand to right hand design can be realized with minimum effort, and the newly designed billet loader can be operated on both sides of the press. In combination with the highly efficient HMI system, SMS’ Sutton MK-V Light Alloy is best in class.

Conventional extrusion press concept

SMS’ Sutton MK-V Light Alloy hydraulic system comes with submerged pumps inside the hydraulic oil tank. This design allows a significant reduction in the required floor space. The pumps are continuously lubricated and cooled as they are bathed in the oil. The optimized foundation design means the overall investment costs for setting up a modern extrusion line are reduced.

The combination of variable displacement axial piston pumps with softstarter-controlled motors guarantees high energy savings. By deactivating motor pump units which are not needed during extrusion, energy savings of up to 25 percent can be realized. The integrated intelligent PLC control system restarts motor pump units only when they are needed for fast movements during dead cycle times. In addition, the fully automated start-stop function increases the pump’s service life as it minimizes pump running times.

REDUCED NOISE LEVELS AND

COOLING REQUIREMENTS

The reduced number of motor pump units in operation has a positive effect on noise levels. Furthermore, the softstarter drive concept means less oil heating, which in turn results in a significant reduction in the required cooling capacity.
