Shrubs—Beyond Peak Season Appeal

With Wayne Mezitt

Wayne Mezitt, the chairman of Weston Nurseries in Hopkinton explained to us how to extend our shrub displays well into the fall. He told us of his family’s history with Weston Nursery, founded in 1923, and the extensive work with flowering shrubs. A major contribution was the PJM Rhododendron in 1945. Ed Metzitt, developed the hardy hybrid and named it in honor of his father, Peter John Mezitt, Wayne’s grandfather. The PJM is now known worldwide as one of the most beautiful and resilient rhododendrons, and graces many gardens in New England. Wayne was very helpful with questions from those in attendance. As usual, being hosted in Whitinsville by the Blackstone Valley Garden Club made for an enjoyable evening.

2nd September Program Recap

Tick Talk All You Need to Know

With Mark Blazis

Thursday, September 27, as guests of the Grafton Garden Club, we met at the Grafton Community Barn for a very informational and entertaining presentation by Mark Blazis. See last month’s newsletter listing Mark’s background as a scientist and extensive research worldwide. This presentation was about his work with deer ticks, birdbanding and Lyme disease. He became more interested in Lyme disease in the 90’s after three friends were debilitated with the illness. The disease spreading rapidly in the 70’s led him to research if migrating birds were playing a role in the spread. Working with other researchers from the medical and pharmaceutical fields he has partnered (and “divorced”) with numerous associates at locations from Maine Medical Center, Harvard School of Public health Tufts and elsewhere. This research included researching ticks on birds during birdbanding, the bacteria, Borrelia bergdorferi, that causes Lyme disease and trying to find a way to eliminate it or vaccinate against it. The most interesting information for me was his explanation of the life cycle of ticks and their relationships to deer and mice populations. Ticks only eat three “blood” meals in their life cycle. These meals can come from various hosts, including deer, mice, birds or humans. I’ve included a chart on the next page from https://www.cdc.gov/ticks/life_cycle_and_hosts.html

Thank you to Helen Blazis and the Grafton Garden Club for inviting us to this program. Helen has worked alongside her husband during his research and provided the visual presentation.

Gardening with Native Plants:

It Matters

https://www.grownativemass.org/

Tuesday, October 23, 2018, @ 7pm Dudley Gendron 156 Boston Rd

Sutton, MA 01590

Native plants are increasingly recognized as important to our gardens and landscapes. Claudia Thompson, will give us an overview of their essential role in ecosystem health. She will explain the differences among native, naturalized and invasive plants. Using Claudia’s 7,000 square foot garden in Cambridge as a case study, we will learn about the essential principles for designing gardens that are places of both beauty and biodiversity. By the end of the program, you will “get” why native plants are so important and understand what you can do in your own garden to make the world a better place!

Claudia Thompson, our speaker, founded Grow Native Massachusetts in 2010 and has been recognized nationally as a leader in the native plant movement. She has had an extensive career in the environmental sector, including past roles as the Director of Education for the Appalachian Mountain Club, Director of Drumlin Farm for MA Audubon and serving nine years on the Board of the New England Wild Flower Society.
