Hypertufa Workshop

The workshop at Joan Stone’s home that had been scheduled in September (but was cancelled due to the weather) was held on October 14th in her yard. About ten club members came prepared with rubber gloves to get their hands dirty!

Mixing expert, Jenni Peters mixed up the wheelbarrow recipe: Equal portions of Portland cement, perlite and sphagnum peat moss.

One of Joan’s pots previously made and planted with beautiful succulents

Some finished planters.

The October “road trip” to the Florence Griswald Museum in Connecticut was cancelled due to low member response. It is still running until October 29th if you want to join in the fun and fantasy. https://florencegriswoldmuseum.org/visit/

Faerie Garden Exhibit Cancelled

The October 17th meeting of the executive board was held at the Dudley Gendron. All members were invited to attend. It is really the best way to learn about how the club functions and to get to know more of the members. After a brief discussion of the Town Meeting and Library vote from the night before, Chris G. asked that we each share summer happenings, gardening related experiences or travels, etc. We went over the current and prior year budget with Joan S. regarding what worked, what didn’t and where our money was spent. Brigitte talked about this year’s scholarship candidate changing career paths and losing our scholarship. Karen R. discussed the expense of printing/mailing membership booklets after input from Liz regarding printing costs going up. We discussed possible ways to trim this cost. Joanne and Joan are finalizing the Holiday Event and we are all looking for a great turnout this year. The Alicante Restaurant has delicious food and is a perfect setting. Sharon M/K wowed us with the quality of our publicity and blog. Our club is no mystery to the public because of Sharon’s dedication. The summer and winter bandstand projects were discussed and we all agreed that this year the bandstand plantings were spectacular. Janet W. told us about the history of our club in maintaining the plantings of Manchaug Square. Joan and Joanne started discussion about what worked and what didn’t at last year’s plant sale (the bake table and white elephant table most likely won’t be repeated). We talked about or membership drive, membership form, and timeliness of paying dues. All members (new and current) are requested to fill in the form every year. This is proof of membership/payment. Also, it is one way to express what one’s areas of interest are in supporting the club. As the newsletter writer, I brought up that I’ve been doing the newsletter since 2013 (this is my fifth year). Many on the board have also held their positions for several years and we would love to have someone step up and give the position new life! Those who are interested will be supported until they feel comfortable in the position. I did not take notes at the meeting and if I forgot to mention an issue, please let me know.

Every year it has been tradition that the Garden Club participates in decorating the Sutton Common. We have the privilege of decorating the bandstand tree that is the centerpiece for the town and its citizens. Decorating occurs on the Saturday after Thanksgiving and takes only about 2-2.5 hours depending on the number of volunteers present. The tree has been the background for countless family cards and the delight of the town children on illumination night. Won't you volunteer and illuminate your seasonal spirit? Please contact Dale Coulter. Thank you! [email protected].
