Tourism has become a major international
industry, with many countries all over theworld relying on the income it produces. Itseconomic advantages as a major source offinance and employment frequently leadsto its active promotion by governments andother institutions, independent of theconsequences on the environment, ecologyand social structure of affected regions.
This conference will explore issuesconcerned with achieving environmentalsocial and economic sustainability of tourismalongside the governance mechanismsneeded to support sustainable tourism. Itcould also discuss how new resources oughtto be employed to avoid the errors
committed in the past and propose remedialactions when required. The meeting will alsofocus on empirical work and case studiesfrom around the world, which can offer newinsights and best practice guidance.
Sustainable Tourism 2014 will adopt a multi-disciplinary approach and will aim specificallyto foster greater understanding andcollaboration between scientists and social
science experts, practitioners and policy makers.
It will take a broad view of this sophisticated andcomplex industry, and will examine the practiceof sustainable tourism from global travel trendsthrough to destination and site management.Innovative solutions are particularly welcome, including ecological tourism as well ascultural initiatives that will lead to betterapproaches to tourism with the objectiveof preserving the diversity of our planet.
The demands of tourism can contribute tothe destruction of the natural and culturalenvironment upon which it depends. Thenatural and cultural landscapes capacity toaccommodate the local and worldwide effects
of tourism and the implications for the human
economy and society constitute veryimportant study objectives.
Sustainable Tourism 2014 aims to find waysto protect the natural and cultural landscapethrough the development of new solutionswhich minimise the adverse effects oftourism. This can be achieved through newstrategies involving the active collaborationof society as a whole.
