AWARENESS ON IMPLEMENTING SUSTAINABLE HOUSING DEVELOPMENTIntroductionMeeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs is defined as sustainable development which needs and limitations are the key concept of it. However awareness regarding to all the problems and issues exist in relation with sustainable housing development is very important to ensure that the natural environment, social and economic aspects are carefully considered prior to any implementation. Implementing sustainable development is the most important step that has to be completed perfectly and meet all needs of the people and future generation while being environmental friendly. However awareness about why sustainable housing development needs to be implemented is a big issue as well.Lack of Awareness Many stakeholders in the construction industry are not aware of the concept of sustainable housing which is because sustainable development has been in infancy stage for the past decade.Furthermore, many construction professionals are not aware of sustainable housing development and its benefits in different aspects due to low level of understanding. In the other hand many developers are not interested to incorporate sustainable housing in their projects which can be because of budget limits and lack of understanding. Education systems can be very effective in this situation. In addition, lack of awareness in societies and public about sustainable housing development is another important issue. Cheaper price of conventional houses compare to sustainable houses is another reason that societies still prefer to buy conventional houses which cause low demand of sustainable houses. So they are not willing to pay more and they do not feel the necessity to incorporate any sustainable concept in their houses. In other word the high cost of living has discouraged people from implementing new expensive sustainable housing, however the financial benefits are remarkable in the long run. All these reasons plus lack of urgency of this issue in different societies cause discouraging stakeholders and developers to sustainable housing development.ProblemsLack of awareness in relation to implementing sustainable housing development causes many problems that push back this concept from growing in different societies and among stakeholders or developers. Basically awareness level of stakeholders in terms of implementation divides into perception, understanding and knowledge; however its affects are on environment, economic and social. The most important problem that occurs due to lack of awareness affect environment which results on waste of energy, water and resources as well as effecting healthy natural environment and healthy indoor environment. Furthermore the economics problems that happens due to lack of awareness about concept of sustainable housing are losing all the benefits that society can get in long run such as affordability, value for money, low cost of maintenance and low living cost. There are also many social affects like usability, health, safety and interaction with the surrounding. Conclusion and RecommendationsConsideration of sustainability can help housing development to be more environmental and social friendly. All different criteria of sustainability need to be considered and implemented in housing developments to allow future generations to be able to meet their needs. The world is moving toward sustainability and countries with high attention to this concept will be better places for next generations. For the first step, informing public, societies, developers and stakeholders about benefits of sustainable housing development could be the most effective solution on lack of awareness. This can include education system which can prepare future construction professions and aware them about sustainable development. However, broad casting can be very affective in informing public and societies about this concept such as documentaries and television commercials that promote and aware people about all the benefits of sustainable houses in long run. Furthermore government and all authorities related in construction industry can force developers and stakeholders to move more towards sustainability and try to support and encourage them in building sustainable houses and also fine them for avoiding this concept and lack of satisfaction requirements in sustainable development. Therefore, it is not a practice of a single party; involvement between the nations is crucial to sustain quality of life
