Talking about young people profes-sional training, SNF group welcomedin2012:•41 trainees inalldepartments,withvalidatedtrainingtopicswhichhelpeddeveloptraineeskillsandwereofrealinterestforSNFCompany.• 17apprenticeshipcontractsorpro-fessionalcontracts.•3primaryschoolteachersandtheirpupilstoreinforcelinksbetweenpro-fessionalandeducationcircles.•Agroupofhighschoolsstudentstointroducethemtothedifferentpro-fessionswithinthecompany.

The SNF group has always favouredcooperation with universities on nu-merous topics. We recently handeda25.000€donationtoSaintEtienneUniversity on the theme of “nonconventionalgasdevelopment”.

Concerning the employment of re-duced mobility people and otherdisabilities, SNF employs about 30disabledpeopleindifferentjobs.Ouraim istotake intoaccountanydisa-bility in the company and to set upsignificantandlonglastingactionsforallactorsinthecompany.Thisdeter-mination was awarded the “HandiLoire”labelin2010.

Moreover, the company uses servicecompanies which are specialized intheemploymentofdisabledpeople,especially incleaningandprotectionequipmentcleaning(suchasgloves).

At the same time, SNF organizes inall departments the collection of ITdisposable products for associationswho help people in great financialconditions.

Onamedicallevel,SNFoffersame-dical care service with 3 nurses anda companyworksdoctor.Thus, each

employee is personally followed ac-cordingtohisjob’srisksandhismedi-calrecords.

TogetherwiththeRedCross,wehavecommittedourselvestoorganizinginourpremisesblooddonationsamongourwholepersonneltocontributetolocalhospitalsbloodneeds.Wehavealsotrainedourstafftoproblemslin-kedtotheuseofpsychoactivedrugs.Ontopofworklawandhygieneregu-lations compulsory obligations, SNFdonates to its workers committeeanadditionalsumof200,000€.Thissumisdedicatedtothewelfareofthestaff through holiday vouchers, forexample.

ManyothermeasureshavebeentakenbySNF,forexample:•Health insurance:SNFprovidesandsubscribes to a mutual health insu-rancegroupatfavourableprices• Saving fund: SNFoffers a companysavingfundtoallemployees.• Pension fund: SNF funds a supple-mentaryprivatepensionscheme.And finally, SNF being concerned bythe well-being of its employees, hassetupapsycho-socialrisksevaluationscale.

AsanactivememberoftheUIC,SNFenthusiasticallytookpartintheinter-national year of Chemistry both inLyonandParis.Moreover,tosupportChemistryinallitspositivesides,SNFdonatedover20.000EurostotheAICassociation,affiliatedtoUNESCOandUN.

SNFisalsoamemberofvariousorga-nizationswhichpromoteandrespectthesamevalues,suchas:• A UN project called Global Com-pact, about human rights, workingstandards and environment protec-tionwhichalsofightsagainstcorrup-tion.•CIRRID«InternationalCentreforin-novationandresourcesinsustainabledevelopment », on any issue relatedtosustainableDevelopment.•Handi-Loire,fortheemploymentofdisabledpeople.

We hope thus to contribute on ourownscaletosettingupfair,socialandresponsible development patternsfullycompatiblewithecological andsocialequilibriumsinthelongrun.

SNF personnelSNF staff is mainly in production.Workshopsworkin3shifts5/7days.Saturdays are usually dedicated tomaintenance and to emergency pro-ductionorders.

Since 1983, SNF SAS has witnessed aconstantgrowthofitsworkforceinallsocio-professionalcategories.

SNF employs around 3700 people in60subsidiariesworldwide.Thereare1200employeesatSNFSASEurope, mainly in France with 899employees, (25%ofourglobalwork-force).

The age average of our employeesis 39 years. The largest age group is41/45years.Itcanbementionedthat60 % of SNF SAS employees haveworked in the company for 10 yearsormore.

Resignation rate is extremely low:atSNFSASitwentfrom3%in2007to 2.33 % in 2012, which proves thatemployees feel comfortable in ourcompany.Ofcourse ithasapositiveimpact on work quality and custo-

mer’ssatisfaction.

This Human resources intranet web-pagewascreatedbySNFin2007.

It is composed of 3 manuals whichcan be consulted by all employees;theDIFguidebook(IndividualrighttoTraining), the GPEC guidebook (skillsandemploymentprovisionalmanage-ment)andtheRHguidebook(Humanresources).These3toolspresentanytraining scheme and skills manage-ment tool available within SNF aswell as general HR information (di-sabledworkers,pension schemes ....).Theyweresetup toencourageeachemployeetobecometheactorofhisownprofessionallife,histrainingandtheoptimizationofhisworkabilityinSNFcompany.

Besidetheseguidebooks2 interfacesare also accessible according to jobpositions: a Training interface and aDistributioninterface.

Thefirstoneenablesmanagerstofol-lowinrealtimewhichtrainingstheirteam members are doing, with fore-seen retraining but also to validatethepresenceofworkers inatrainingwhich they are organizing (presencesheetandtraininggrid).

Global CompactSNFgrouphasbeenstronglyinvolvedinasustainabledevelopmentstrategyformanyyears.

Wehavetakenpartinmanyimprove-mentprojectsrelatedtothe3sustai-nabledevelopmentthemes:• Economical: to maintain local em-ploymentandeconomicalactivity.•Social:toguaranteeouremployeesoptimizedworkingconditions.• Environmental: reducing to a mini-mumourfootprintonenvironment.

This commitment is also actedthrough SNF membership to the UNGlobalCompactagreement.The values supported by the Glo-bal Compact agreement are totallyconsistentwithSNFvisionandcom-mitment.Afuturecanonlyexistifalongtermbalanceisfoundatasocial

andenvironmentallevel.

SNF signed this Global Compactagreement two years ago. In these 2years,SNFhasreinforceditscommit-ment towards the promotion of the10principlesoftheagreement,based

onhumanrights,workingconditions,environment protection and fightagainstcorruption.

Through its actions and initiatives,SNF contributes to the promotionof the Global Compact agreementvalues.

Integrating disabled workersSNF has subscribed to Club HandiLoire since 2004 to improve integra-tion, professional advancement andcontinuous employment of disabledpeople.

Inthisfield,SNFmonitorsvariouspro-jectstogivedisabledpeopleaprofes-sionalstatus.

Early 2010, SNF decided to recruit ahearingdeficientworkerandtotrainhimasaproductionlineoperator.InJunewemetasecondpersonwithasimilar deficiency and took him onintotheproject.

ThetrainingwassetupwiththeAFPI(continuous training organization) toadaptthetrainingtothedisabilityofbothemployees.A hearing deficiency awareness trai-ning was set up among productionteamsbytheURAPEDA(specifictrai-

ningorganisation).

Thefirstobjectiveofthese2contractswas tomakeSNFemployees theac-tors of this integration and trainingscheme, and allow all staff to moveforward on the subject of disabilityatwork;thesecondobjectivewastogive these2disabledworkers aqua-lification, anexperienceand theabi-litytojointhecompanypermanently(oneofthemhasnowsignedaCDI–permanentcontract)

Theintegrationofthesehearingdefi-cientworkerscreatedarealdynamicwithintheteamsbutalsointhewholecompany (Many employees asked tobetrainedinsigning….)

Early in December 2012, the expe-rience was renewed with the takingon of a new hearing deficient wor-kerwhowillbetrainedasachemicalindustryproductionoperatorona17month professional contract, toge-ther with other chemical industrycompanies.

2012An encouraging Second se-mesterEvenifthenumberoflosttimeacci-dents slightly increased in 2012, it isimportant to mention that the se-cond semester was more than satis-fyingwithonly3 lost timeaccidentsrecorded.

Our objectives for 2013Ourobjectivein2012wastostabilizethefrequencyrateunder10.Ouraimstill being « Zero accident », it wastherefore not reached. SNF commitsitself in 2013 to pursue its efforts toreach:

•Alosttimeaccidentsfrequencybe-low6.•Adecreaseby30%ofreportedope-rational accidents, which means lessthan 20 reported operational acci-dents with or without lost time in awholeyear.

A human commitmentTraining and information of the staffare carried out by a supervisors’network.

A culture for safetyThesafetyculturewillprogressthankstothedailycommitmentofeveryone,managers as well as employees. Theobjectiveistoseebehavioursimpro-vingandbetterpracticessetup.The-reforeourtrainingsandourmeetingsmustincludetwomajortopics:healthandsafety.

FeedbacksTraining is an essential tool for pre-vention. Feedbacks on incident ormalfunctioning make it possible toavoid these happening again, this isthereasonwhytheyaresoimportant.Aftereachincidentormalfunctioningthecircumstancesandconsequencesmust be reported. A cause analysiswill be done and recommendationsmade. Thus all feedbacks are forma-lized.

Technological risk control and safety managementSNFhas2plants inFrancethatpres-ent risks according to the criteria oftheEuropeanSevesodirective.ItsRiskManagementSystem(RMS)issubjecttointernalaudits,andisalsoauditedbytheDREAL*.

Overthe last25years,SNFhasbeenconstantly improving its procedures,includingthosewhichareconcernedwithriskmanagement.

Rightfromtheoutset,SNFhasequip-ped itself with the resources, bothmaterialandspatial,requiredforcom-pliancewithquality, safetyandenvi-ronmentalnorms.

SNF’sRiskManagementSystemcom-plies with Annex III of the Seveso IIplanforthepreventionofmajoracci-dents.

The RMS deals with individual res-ponsibilities, reinforces staff training,anddevelopsin-housesystematicriskanalysis, and also reinforces inspec-tionandmonitoringprograms.

Careful of our Environment, SNF isISO14001 certified to formalize itsactionsintotheinternationalenviron-mentprotectionmanagementsystem.

We are also involved with the UIC(Responsible Care® partner) to act infavourofenvironmentprotectionandthereforehave:

•initiatedaworkingcommittee,afteran external audit by an independentcompany, to reduce our energyconsumptionbyactingonhumanbe-havioursaswellasonourproductiontoolsandequipments.•carriedoutacarbonfootprint®withADEMEmethod,todefinegreenhousegasemissionslinkedtoouractivityinorder to reduce them and thereforelowerourimpactonenvironment.

Thebestproofofourconcernaboutenvironmentprotectionwasourdeci-siontobuildournewplantona40ha

green-fieldsitededicatedtoindustry,outside of town: thus the infrastruc-turesneededtodealwithdischargeswerebuiltintothedesignoftheplantatthedrawing-boardstage.

SNF’s policy consists in using green-field sites, thus, the infrastructuresneeded to deal with discharges canbebuilt intothedesignofaplantatthedrawing-boardstage.

ISO 14001As far as environment is concerned,SNFhasalwayshadaveryclearstra-tegy,basedoncommitmentsandpre-cise objectives. This is reflected byconcreteobjectivesin:

•Energyconsumption,•Emissions,•Waterconsumption•Wastemanagement,•Researchandenvironment.

Carbon Footprint®To preserve the environment is thefirst objective of SNF group. Our po-licy regarding environment has there-fore always been at the heart of ourstrategyandisbasedoncommitmentsandobjectives.Doingcarbonfootprintmeasurementsbelongstothem.

SNFusedtheADEMEmethodtoeva-luate greenhouse gas emissions. ThisauditwascarriedoutwithanexternalcompanySOCOTEC.

SNFdiditsfirstcarbonfootprintstudyin2007andthefirstresultswere:353kgCeq/t of manufactured product, onAndrezieuxsiteinFrance.

Thesefirstfigureswereobtainedwithcalculationhypothesis,which impliedsomeuncertainties.

In the following years, we tried hard,ontopofemissionsreduction,toshar-pen our information collection andthereforegetmorepreciseresults.

Tobementioned isthattheemissionfactor corresponding to the energyconsumed to manufacture 1 tonne ofproductis54,1kgCeqin2011.

Those yearly figures enable us to setup improvement measures, especiallyconcerningenergysaving. A dedica-tedtaskforcewascreatedtoworkonthistopicandreduceourcosts.

In2009,78745tCeqemissions,whichcorrespondsto375kgCeq/tofmanu-factured products. This rise by 2.5%compared to 2008 can be partiallyexplainedbyaproductiondecrease.

However, the opposite trend wasobserved in 2010 with a productionincreaseanda significantdropofouremissions -4,5% with 358kgCeq/tformanufacturedproducts.

In2011,wecanobserveaslightincreasebutouremissionsseemtohavestabi-lised.

Results

Actions set upAnactionplanisstillinusetooptimizeour energy consumption and improvethe efficiency of our plants. There areseveral projects to recycle end energy(hot air coming from the dryers) andusingourutilitiesinabetterway.

Thetrendofourgasconsumptionoverthelast9years,asshowninthehereun-dertableshowsthatit isslightlygoingdown(exceptin2009)comparedtothetotal quantity of products manufactu-red.

Tomanufacture1tonneoffinishedpro-duct, our water requirements are now20% below those 10 years ago. Tankswashinghasparticularlybeenoptimizedby recycling more water and develo-pingnewwashingtechniques(differentwashing nozzles now enable us to re-duceourwaterneedby75%).

byourproductionworkshopsbeforebeinghandledbyourwasteteam.•Powderwasteisputinbig-bagsandburiedinspecificlandfillsites,•Emptyplasticdrumsandpalesfrom25 to 100 l are sorted according totheir dangerous nature and incinera-ted in a specialized centre, or givenbacktosuppliers.• Other empty packaging items arealso sorted according to the dan-gerous nature of the product theycontained:• Safe empty packaging items : col-lectedintransparentbags. It isoftenm•adeoflabelsupportpapers,shrinkwrapping film, innocuous raw mate-rialbags….Andotherindustrialwastesuchascanteenbins.Thesebagsareput in the DIB trash compactor andaretakentoawastedisposalunittobe recycled or used as substitutionfuel.• Reactive products bags (oxidizingmaterial and organic peroxides) arecollectedinyellowbagsintheworks-hopsandthenincineratedinaspecia-lisedcentre.•Bagscontainingpotentiallyexplosiveproducts(ADRclass4.1)arecollectedingreenbags,orintheiroriginalcard-board boxes; they are incinerated insmallquantityinaspecializedcentreinSwitzerland,• Other dangerous products bags(irritant, corrosive, inflammable…) arecollectedinredbagsintheworkshopand are pressed and incinerated in aspecializedcentre.

Each waste shipment is prepared bythe Environment department toge-therwiththewastecollectingteam.

For manufacturing rejects, powderbig-bags and other packing, infor-mation mentioned on the labels iscollected to track the rejects originwithinSNFandtosetupwaste indi-cators.

Forsomedangerouswasteandotherinoffensivewaste,wastetrackingslipsare filled in. These tracking slips willaccompany waste during transportuntil their final destruction. Thesedocumentsarefilledinbyeachtreat-

ment actor(carrier, storing centre...)and is sent back to us when wastehas been destroyed. This feedbackenablesustoinformtheDREALofthedestructionmodeused.

There is a specific software dedica-ted to issuing BSD, putting in detailsrelated to waste disposal (recyclingor incineration, service companies…)various costs in relation with wastedisposal(transport,processing,taxonpollutingactivities–TGAP-,containerrenting…).Thisinformationhelpsustosetupmonthlyinternalindicatorsandfill in the reportdocument transmit-tedeachyeartotheDREAL.

Waste Management

WasteSNF environment impacts are partlylimitedthankstoourwastemanage-ment :sourceseparation, researchingsolutions adapted to the differentkind of waste and encouraging reco-very channels, tracking waste untilfinal recycling, measuring costs andweightswithindicators.

Waste is sorted in each workshop,then handled by a specialized teamwhotakesittoastoringareadedica-tedtoeachkindofwaste:•Stainlesssteeltrim,ironandcopperscrapsaswellasenginesandelectriccablesareput in a special container,thensortedandrecycled.• Used empty big-bags are pressedintobalesthenrecycledtofurtheruseofrawmaterial.•Cardboardisalsopressedintobalesandsoldtocardboardmanufacturingplants,•Officepaperis storedinaspecificareaandrecycledbyacompanyem-ployingdisabledworkers,•Woodpalletsaretakenbackbyoursuppliers. Broken pallets are repai-red,nonstandardpalletsareusedforwaste transport, and wood bits arethrown into a container for energyrecovery.• Computers, refrigerators and otherDEEEaredismantledbyaspecializeddepartmentandallelementsaresor-tedtoberecycledtotheirbest.• Neon lights are collected and re-cycled,•1000Lplasticcontainersand200Lplasticdrumsaretakenbackbyaspe-cialized company, they are cleaned,anddependingontheirstate,canbere-used, recycled or destroyed. Thisalso is thecase for200Lmetalbar-rels,•Activecarbonsareregeneratedbyaspecializedcompanyandre-used.• Liquid distillation waste which wasused as fuel in incineration plants isnow re-distilledby anexternal com-panytobere-usedassolvent inma-nufacturingprocess.• Manufacturing and laboratory re-jects, filtration bags and other pac-kagedproductsareusuallyburntinaspecializedcentre.Theyareidentified
