A Discussion on SustainabilityIn the built environment what is really sustainable?

Sustainable vs. GreenAs the market demand trends more towards all things “green” we

have to ask ourselves what that really means.

Sustainable has a specific meaning that can be quantified and measured.

• A sustainable approach or product uses less resources and can be reused

• A sustainable product is inherently efficient• A sustainable product will have little or no adverse health effects

Green is a color. In the context of building projects, green is essentially a marketing word used to elicit an emotional response.

The conclusion is that a sustainable approach is both quantifiable and measurable and a green approach is just marketing.


How Does “Sustainable” Work?Is it a philosophy? And if so, how can I install it in a building?

Sustainability is an approach. A sustainable product is developed using the philosophy and will work like any product you are currently using. There might be some modification required in the actual installation process, or there might not.

Sustainable products among other things will: • Be made from renewable resources or reclaimed waste

materials• Be recyclable or reusable at the end of life• Contain no toxins or chemicals that will have an adverse effect

on the workers or final inhabitants• Perform as well as, or better than, the products being used now


Maximizing Efficiency and Cost EffectivenessThe Bottom Line

Does Sustainable Cost More?To be adopted a sustainable product needs to be cost competitive.

That being said, there are a number of factors to consider.• The product can be one-to-one price competitive to current

product• You may need less of the product to do the same job making it

cost competitive• Several functions may be performed allowing you to use less

overall product in construction lowering the overall cost• It may take less time to install a product saving labor coasts • Future legal issues might be averted by using products less likely

to mold, absorb moisture, allow sound to become an issue or cause allergic reactions

• Less sick day call-outs delaying construction due to employee reactions to toxic products

An Updated Definition of CostThis is a new way of looking at development and building that

includes:• Lifecycle analysis• Total cost of ownership• Return on investment• Long-term risk assessment

These are not nebulous concepts that focus on the green or environmental, they are business terms that focus on doing the job well with a profit.

What is needed to make this a true business function are products and technologies that meet the cost benefit needs of the project as well as the resource and environmental goals being adopted.

As resources diminish and costs rise, sustainable and efficient products become even more cost effective when applied to a business model.


The Overarching ImpactA sustainable approach will have an end to end positive impact that

will include benefits from the designer, the builder, the management and the inhabitant. The benefits will be quantifiable and will:

• Be cost competitive in the short term or have a significant return on investment

• Address lifecycle and or cradle to cradle goals

• Meet and/or exceed current product/technology performance

• Provide a reasonable cost benefit compared to traditional methods and products/technologies

• Reduced risk of litigation from some of the most common causes:• Moisture/Mold• Sound• Structural integrity

Goals and ObjectivesWhat is the Clean technology Trade Alliance?The Clean Technology Trade Alliance (CTTA) finds solutions that are cleaner, more sustainable and more efficient than what you are utilizing now. Our member companies bring customers added reliability, cost effectiveness and reduced risk.

CTTA is a powerful force for change: •Through adoption of sustainable technologies and processes. CTTA reduces risk of adoption through a strict validation process that assures customers the companies CTTA represents can and will do the job the promised.•With increased business, member companies grow and add jobs to our economy.•Solving problems by assessing and developing solutions to address the issue both tactically and strategically with value across the board.


The Process


Define

•Technologies, products, and services are defined by customer requests, projects developed by CTTA or a gap identified in an industry specific portfolio

Research

•A Member Services Researcher looks for companies that provide these technologies, products or services and eliminates those not commercialized.

Review

•A Member Services Coordinator reviews the companies that made the first cut and looks for news and information regarding performance, customer service, complaints, and resolutions

Contact

•The remaining companies will be contacted through their web-based channels to see how they respond to a request to develop a business relationship. 60% fail to respond to their communication process

Screen

•Those that respond are asked to engage in a 15 minute phone meeting to determine if there is a mutual value to continuing the process, less than 25% make it through the meeting and member referral stages

Validate

•The remaining candidates are invited into an interview process that engages them in a 2-3 hours interview where they are asked to discuss business planning, supply chain, customer and supplier relations, problem solving, etc.

HOMASOTE PANELS! 100% recycled content Homasote panels used

for temporary structures in wars, sound barriers in LEED buildings,

and decks to cover ice rinks were the choice as a dance floor for royal

horses. Really - if these panels could support tons of dancing horses

in echoey arenas without deafening us all, wouldn’t they be awesome

sound barriers and supports for little humans in high heels?


ReWallThe ReWall Company, LLC uses a proven European technology to recycle

polyethylene-coated cups, cartons, and their components into building

materials. The first U.S. ReWall products are manufactured in Des

Moines, Iowa, and distributed nationally. Almost all of our inputs are

sourced within 500 miles of our production facility.

They help recycle some of the 2 million tons of polyethylene-coated

cartons and cups that enter landfills every year. Those products were

first recycled in Europe through a process that has a smaller carbon

footprint and is more efficient than alternative processes that require

stripping away the plastic, removing the ink and salvaging the remaining

paper. The manufacturing process is environmentally friendly and does

not use added glue, water or chemicals. ReWall is 100% recycled.

Since the days of cave paintings, man has painted structures – that’s

Water Harvesting SolutionsWater is the topic of the decade. Questions are being generated by
