Vive la

Difference!

Page 4: Sustainable Biofuels Update

“La femme fatale” “L’homme glorieux” or

Page 5: Sustainable Biofuels Update

Different opinions!

Right or Wrong!

Is the global warming

caused by humanity?

“Is climate change a

natural phenomena,

caused by Sun spots,

planet’s position etc!”

Global warming and

increased CO2 has

occurred before!

“Nature is forgiving!”

Really, I do not have to

worry!

Page 6: Sustainable Biofuels Update

OK! But what about pollution? Not to worry!

Page 7: Sustainable Biofuels Update

Pollution? It’s not me! It’s the other guy! Not to worry!

Page 8: Sustainable Biofuels Update

You see! It’s not me! Not to worry! The average 500 MW coal-fired plant produces approximately 3

million tons of CO2 emissions per year

Page 9: Sustainable Biofuels Update

“Anyhow, the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico will solve itself!”

Not to worry!

Page 10: Sustainable Biofuels Update

Deep Sea drilling under the North Pole sea ice? No problem!

Not to worry!

Page 11: Sustainable Biofuels Update

Melting ice, global warming, pollution, acid seas etc,

it wont change the Gulf Steam!

Not to worry!

Page 12: Sustainable Biofuels Update

Anyhow, volcanoes cause the GHG emissions;

Not to worry! (Volcanoes emits 195 to 255 million short tons of SO2/CO2 every year,

but is still less than 1% (one) of the total CO2 emitted from human

activities.)

Page 13: Sustainable Biofuels Update

45% remains in the atmosphere!

2008 Not to worry?

Page 14: Sustainable Biofuels Update

30%

25%

< 1%

Page 16: Sustainable Biofuels Update

However, since thousand of years while life on earth

started to develop, CO2 fluctuated between 200 and

275ppm, but never as high as it’s now - and even

worst, foreseen to climb!

Page 17: Sustainable Biofuels Update

385ppm 350ppm

275ppm

Page 18: Sustainable Biofuels Update

The higher the global temperatures increase, the worst it gets for the planet.

Page 19: Sustainable Biofuels Update

Number of Hot Days and Heavy Rainfall Days

Page 20: Sustainable Biofuels Update

World Population Growth Scenarios – three possibilities!

“Just” 3, 5 or 7 billion additional mouths to feed! Not to worry!

Page 21: Sustainable Biofuels Update

Hey – give me a break!

Stop the bad news; please, lets talk about the good news!

Page 22: Sustainable Biofuels Update

What’s needed! WIND

5.8TW (51% of supply)

3.8M Wind Turbines (5MW each - 1% in place)

720T Wave Converters (0.75MW each – 1% in place)

SOLAR

4.6TW (40% of supply)

1.8M Rooftop PV’s (0.003MW each – 1% in place)

48T Solar Power Plants (300MW each – 1% in place)

40T PV Power Plants (300MW each – 1% in place)

WATER

1.1TW (9% of supply)

490T Tidal Turbines (1MW each – 1% in place)

5,350 GeoThermal plants (100MW each – 2% in place)

900 Hydroelectric plants (1300MW each – 70% in place)

Page 23: Sustainable Biofuels Update

Renewable Installations required Worldwide

in 2030 (BAU = 16.9TW) Renewables = 11.5TW • Water – 1.1TW/ 9% of supply;

– 490,000 Tidal Turbines/ 1MW* (1% in place)

– 5,350 Geothermal plants/ 100MW* (2% in place)

– 900 Hydroelectric plants/ 1300MW* (70% in place)

• Wind -- 5.8TW/ 51% of supply;

– 3,800,000 Wind Turbines/ 5MW* (1% in place)

– 720,000 Wave Converters/ 0.75MW* (1% in place) [wind drives waves]

• Solar -- 4.6TW/ 40% of supply;

– 1,700,000,000 Rooftop PV units/).003MW (1% in place)

– 49,000 Solar Power Plants/300MW (1% in place)

– 40,000 PV Power Plants/300MW (1% in place)

– This covers the majority of the world’s energy requirements, but others such as biofuels, fuel cells and new technology sources are also needed.

The steps into the future Roadmap of Energy!

Page 24: Sustainable Biofuels Update

The good scenario

• Over time, we must replace all use of fossil fuels (oil, coal and gas) with sustainable and renewable energy and product sources; – All terrestrial power generation must be based on power from

Windmills, Wave converters, Hydro Power plants, Solar farms, Solar cells, Geothermal energy sources and other sustainable and non-polluting resources.

– Convert all terrestrial transportation to electrical vehicles except maybe Heavy Road Transportation (HRT).

– Convert world shipping to sustainable/renewable energy sources such as fuel-cells, biofuel and/or other sources with low or zero CO2/GHG emissions.

– Convert all aviation’s requirements from fossil Jet-Kerosene to biofuel with low or zero CO2/GHG emissions.

– So how do we do that – and is it feasible with today’s technology and world economies?

Page 25: Sustainable Biofuels Update

Well, that’s exactly the

subject of today’s workshop;

Energy Strategy 2050 is a Danish

version of global vision.

Can we do it!

How do we do it!

Local versus Global action!

What does it cost?

- and many other questions.
