Still wasting your food scraps? Unless you have

NO garden or balcony, there is a method of turning your foodscraps into great fertiliser! Let us help you choose & learn a method that suits your circumstances. We’ll help you find a demonstration or class to suit your needs, either here or elsewhere.

BOKASHI fermentation kitchen composting

was developed by Japanese scientist Dr Higa in the 1980’s. It’s ideal for small households, with small gardens, meat eaters or folks who are away a lot, AND for wormfarmers or composters who’d like to do something with those meaty, cheesy, prawny, citrussy, smelly foodscraps. You’ll still need at least 5m2 of garden in which to bury the fermented foodscraps so they turn into compost. The bucket sits in your kitchen. Empty your day’s food waste into it, sprinkle the microbe liquid or granules onto it, compress a little, drain once or twice a week, and in ~3 weeks when full, bury the contents. Mixed with soil, it becomes great compost in 2-3 weeks in summer, 5-6 weeks in winter. Diluted liquid is great plant food also. Takes all food scraps - vegies, fruit (inc.citrus) meat, fish, bones, the lot!

Worms suit patios, balconies, laundries.

DON’T feed them meat, citrus, onions or bread.

Our ‘FOODSCRAPS to FERTILISER’ collection

WORM CAFE $74.50

Wormfarm ‘accessories’

Worm blanket $12 or find a piece of thick cloth or some old woollen carpet Wormfarm conditioner $12or buy yourself a bag of dolomite (garden lime) from a hardware. Have it on hand for when tiny ‘vinegar flies’ let you know that things are getting too acidic.

WORM FARMINGis for smaller

gardens, balcony gardens - or for anyone who wants yummy worm juice and castings for their garden or pot plants. You start your worms off in coconut fibre bedding in the lowest of the 3 working trays. (1000 for one person’s scraps, 2000+ for 2+.) When this is full of castings, put food scraps in the next tray up, and the worms will ‘eat their way up’ into it.

Liquid drains down through the working trays to the solid-based collector tray, where you tap it and use it (diluted) on everything inc. indoor pot plants. (No smell!)

By the time the top working tray is full, you take the bottom tray and remove the castings, then return it to the top again in a neverending cycle.

Worm ‘wee’ or ‘tea’ is great fertiliser, adding microbial life to your soil. Castings are great liquefied too!

Don’t overfeed: check that they’re keeping up with your food supply, and remove foodscraps that have gone

RELN wormfarms are made from recycled plastic, so you’re complet-ing the cycle in another way as well when you buy one.

We stock the Worm Cafe, a perfect shape for the corner of a patio, balcony or laundry. It’s a big improvement on the fiddly old Worm Factory. They are sturdy enough to pick them up and drive them to Grandma’s for a long summer holiday! If you want the round CanOWorms or are missing bits for an older Worm Factory, we’ll order them in for you.

COMPOST BINSIf you have a sunny spot in a

backyard, we suggest you recycle your food waste, lawn clippings, cardboard, etc. in two compost bins, buried about 20 cms into the ground. We suggest a solid compost bin with a well-fitting lid and no air holes. We stock the GEDYE bins which look good and work well.

The SEED PAGEEnvironment House is strongly committed to supporting organic, GM-free food-growing, so we source and supply only

ORGANIC, non-hybrid, non-irradiated seeds. One of our WA suppliers is YILGARN SEEDS from the Dryland Permaculture Nursery in Geraldton. Dryland’s Julie Firth has sourced seeds from many drier parts of the world for the permaculture community. We stock only some of her seeds, but her catalogue is a great resource for those seeking more unusual permaculture plants. We also sell a good range of Queensland’s SELECT ORGANICS (part of Eden Seeds) with great photos of the plants you’ll soon be growing!

Grow vegies from seed in your own potting mix! Tips from our last wonderful gardener Bonnie Wykman Seedraising mix must provide 1) a good consistency for seeds to grow in

2) enough nutrient to grow into seedlings. You will need:• Coir (coconut fibre) brick/s To keep your mix organic buy one with no added fertiliser - read the fine print. EnviroHouse stocks CoirPower Garden Soil (100% coir) (optional) You can add kelp to the water you soak the coir in. EH sells EcoSeaweed. • Compost worm castings or compost sifted as finely as possible. EH can provide you with some for a small donation.• Garden soil For most of us this will be sand with very little organic matter. If you have no open ground, dig some from a friend’s backyard. • Clay, calcium bentonite or kaolin EH stocks Watheroo Bentonite and Soil Solver• Minerals EH sells No Frills Rock Dust Plus from Bunbury’s (volcanic) basalt

THE RATIO I USE IS:1/3 coir 1/3 compost OR 1/4 worm castings with a little extra coir) 1/3 garden soil+ a handful of clay for every 30L (3 buckets) of potting mix+ minerals according to the instructions for quantities according to the volume of potting mix you are making.

SEED PLANTING FOR BEGINNERSNow add your high quality potting mix you are ready to seedling trays or small pots. If you’re a new seed sower, start with seeds that have a fast germination time Here are some easier to grow autum/winter seeds.• lettuce • broad beans •radish • peas •rocket • broccoli • cabbage(Be aware that in spring, you’ll need to deal with cabbage moth for broccoli & cabbage. Your vigilance and Dipel is highly recommended!)The general rule is to sow them at a depth of 1.5 times their width. For very small seeds this means just a fine sprinkling of potting mix over the top. Don’t pat down soil hard. Space the seeds to give them room to grow into seedlings. If your seed packet doesn’t tell you, see http://www.gardenate.com/?month=5.for a sowing guide for a temperate climate. (Gardenate even has phone apps!)Happy propagating! Bonnie

A few tips via Google, on TRANSPLANTING YOUR SEEDLINGSwww.vegetablegardener.com/item/13615/5-tips-for-transplanting-vegetable-seedlings• Prepare to transplant when you see a couple of sets of true leaves, but before they get lanky. • Drizzly or overcast weather best. Otherwise early morning. (Full sun is too harsh.)• A few days ahead, use seaweed spray to help shockproof your babies. • A few hours ahead water seedlings • Prepare your holes first, (with some compost) so seedlings can be in their new ground ASAP.

SOAPNUTS? Used in Asia for thousands of years, the inner shells of the nuts of the tree Sapondus Mukorossi are lined with an amazing substance called SAPONIN which creates the perfect light wash. We recommend you also have a tub of EnviroClean’ Laundry Powder & Pre-Soaker on hand for those really dirty washes now and then.

Soapnuts give a lovely soft wash, and because they don’t foam, you can skip the rinse cycle and save heaps of water (as you can with the wash balls also.) But if you can’t interrupt the cycle, it doesn’t matter. We sell ‘NUTCASES’ Fair Trade Organic soapnuts from Nepal. You use 8 shells in a little pouch in your wash (top or front load) then after about 6 washes, throw them in your garden or compost and start again. (about 4 cents per wash)

They have also worked really hard to go PALM OIL FREE, having seen for themselves that the so-called RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) can be a very thin greenwash for companies still sourcing some of their oil from palms grown after illegal rainforest deforestation. Environment House knows that palm oil is not going to go away and that it is a big employer in developing countries. But we feel a boycott of this product will serve to properly regulate RSPO members’ practices so they can convince us that we can eat TimTams or buy EcoStore products again if we must!http://www.saynotopalmoil.comSo give Enviro a go, for ‘small footprint’ cleaning products -(only lugged around metro Perth and not destroying Asian rainforest!)

Our beautiful Tinderbox cabinet made by Rob in 2001 when we inherited Tinderbox stock from a shop that closed nearby..

from the Tinderbox website Cheekyherbs.com

In 1982, there were very few natural products on the market. We opened a shop in the township of Balingup in the south-west. The business blossomed as more people came to the Tinderbox via word of mouth, to try these pure plant products that really seemed to work! The herbs we use are clean and fresh, with their colour and aroma still intact; thus their medicinal and cosmetic values are conserved. They are hand-made in small batches, so harmful preservatives aren’t needed. We use organic ingredients where possible, and package mostly in beautiful protective blue glass. No animal testing, animal-derived ingredients and NO PALM OIL!

NOTE: These items are the ones we try to keep in stock. For other Tinderbox products, order directly from their website. Cheekyherbs.com
