Sinceitsinception,JCRhasdevelopeduniquestrengthsandachievedsustainedgrowthasacompanywhichtakes“onestepahead”ofcompetitorsatalltimes.Webelievethatourcoremissionistofocusinrareandintractablediseasesanddevelop and create the worldʼs first innovativebiopharmaceuticalsoriginatingfromJapan.JCR has defined rare diseases, environment, society, andcorporate governance as its priority areas, and isdetermined to solve issues in each through its businessactivities.Thebenefitsderivedfromtheseactivitieswillbereturnedtoandsharedwithabroadrangeofstakeholderswithinandoutsidethecompany.Intheprocess,weaimtoachievesustainabilityfromanESGperspective.JCRseekstobea“Researchorientedspecialtypharmawithglobal exposure.” Concurrently, we will make a concertedeffort to engage in sustainability and steadily realize ourcorporate philosophy of “Contributing towards peopleʼshealthcare through pharmaceutical products.” We lookforwardtoyourcontinuedunderstandingandsupportasweendeavortoreachourgoals.

RAREDISEASEProjectThe RARE DISEASE Project is a cross-sectional internal awareness-raising project for all JCRemployees to further increase theirunderstandingof rarediseases,with “What JCRcando”as itsmotto.We collect information and share it internally to deepen employeesʼ understanding of rarediseases.We also support and cooperatewith patient groups and support organizations that helppeoplefightrarediseases.At JCR, we promote awareness within the company by conducting fundraising activities andencouraging employees to wear official badges for Rare Disease Day, distributing reports onparticipation by employees in events organized by patient groups and organizations that supportpatientswithrarediseases,andarranginginternallecturesforouremployees.Foreachlecture,weinviterarediseasespecialistsandmembersofpatientgroupstotalkaboutdiseasemechanismsandtheirexperiences.In January 2019,weheld our first publicseminar titled “LearningMore about RareDiseases” in Ashiya, Hyogo Prefecture,whereJCRisheadquartered.Attheevent,lectures were given by a rare diseasespecialist, a leader of a patient supportgroup,andthemanagerofMomijiHouse,afacilityforseriouslyillchildrenandtheirfamilies operated by the National Centerfor Child Health and Development.Through this seminar, we strove toincreaseknowledgeofrareandintractabled i seases pr imar i ly among Ash iyaresidents.

RareDiseaseDayFrom FY2015, JCR has been a supporter ofRareDiseaseDay(celebratedglobally).Thereare patients suffering from rare andintractablediseasesaroundtheworld,butthetotal number of these patients is small, andthe disease mechanisms are complicated.Therefore,almostnoprogresshasbeenmadein research and development of therapeuticsandmethodsofdiagnosesforsomediseases.RareDiseaseDayactivitiesbegan inSwedenin2008withtheaimofimprovingthequalityof life of patients with rare and intractablediseases through better diagnoses andtreatments. It is hoped that these activitieswill create a bridge between patients andsociety, and help to increase awareness ofrareandintractablediseases.

FundraisingActivitiesTo commemorate Rare Disease Day, JCRencourages employees to wear official RareDisease Day badges and raises funds withinthe company in February every year. Fundsraised are donated to organizations workingto provide information to patients with rarediseases, encourage cooperation withhealthcareprofessionals,promoteresearchtodevelop therapies, and raise awareness insociety.

The RARE DISEASE project is a cross-sectional internalawarenessproject thathasbeenactivesince2016.Currently,atotalof13membersfromvariousdivisionswithinJCRareactiveasmembersoftheproject.Our activities center on two areas: (1) Collection and internaldissemination of information intended to deepen understandingof rare diseases and (2) Collaboration with and support forpatient groups and rare disease support organizations.Specifically, our activities include participation and interactionwith patient groups at seminars and distribution of reports onthose activities within the company. We also hold in-houselectures and fundraising events, disseminate Rare Disease Dayevents in the company, and participate in other nationwideevents.Thisyear,weheldapublicseminaraboutrarediseaseinAshiya,HyogoPrefecture,where JCR is headquartered, andwewere able to carry out awareness-building activities for localresidents.Going forward,wewould like toexpand the rangeofourawareness-buildingactivitiesaboutrarediseases.

JCR has been implementing a wide range of measures to mitigate its environmental impact,including reducing CO2 emissions and effectively using water resources. For example, we haveworkedto transition toLED lightingatallcompany facilitiesandshiftallourcommercialvehicles,including thoseusedat plants and theResearch Institute, tohybrid cars andelectric vehicles. Inaddition,we have promotedmeasures such as reducingwater use atmanufacturing sites, alongwithadoptingsingle-usebioreactorstoensuretheefficientuseofmanufacturingfacilities.In2015,weintroducedelectricvehiclesasameansoftransportationbetweensites,inconjunctionwith installing power feed systems at our headquarters as well as at plants and the ResearchInstitute.Currently,hybridcarsaccount foraroundhalfof thevehiclesused inbusinessactivities.Going forward, we will sequentially switch over to electric vehicles as public charging stationsbecome more widely available. In 2016, we installed a solar power generating system at ourResearch Institute (in Nishi-ku, Kobe). Moreover, we have taken steps to improve energyconsumption in production activities in cooperation with The Kansai Electric Power Company,Incorporated.

EnergyUseJCRhasseenanincreaseintotalenergyuse(electricity,gas)asitsbusinessresultshavegrown.IntheResearchDivision,totalenergyusehasincreasedduetothestartofoperationoftheClinicalTrialMaterialManufacturingCenter(CTMC)andCellProcessingCenter(CPC)in2016.IntheProductionDivision,totalenergyusehasremainedmostlyflat,mainlyowingtotheinstallationofhighlyenergy-efficientequipmentandrevisionstohowweuseenergy.Weexpecttoobtaindataonenergyuseinbusinessactivities(mainlygasoline)fromFY2019.

WaterResourcesWehaveseenadecreaseintheuseofwaterresources,despite growth in our business results. The mainreasonsforthedecreasewerereductionsintheamountofwaterusedinresearchandproductionprocessesandefforts topromote therecovery, reuse,etc.ofexhauststeam. All water used in research and productionactivitieshasbeentreatedappropriately.

EnvironmentalImpactFluorocarbon emissions are known to be a cause of global warming. JCR complies with theFluorocarbonEmissionControlLaw(ActonRationalUseandProperManagementofFluorocarbons)tocontroltheimpactoffluorocarbonemissionsontheenvironment.Pursuanttothislaw,weimplementstatutoryinspections(simplifiedandregular),managethenumberofrefrigerationfacilities,whichcangenerate fluorocarbon emissions, andmonitor the volume of fluorocarbon leakage.We also complywiththeNoiseRegulationActtocontroltheimpactofnoiseontheareassurroundingsites.Pursuanttothisact,weinstallequipmentandotherfacilitiesinconsiderationofanynoiseimpactssitesmaycause.We comply with the Water Pollution Prevention Act and Sewerage Act to control the impact ofwastewaterontheenvironment.Pursuanttotheselawsaswellasordinances,wemonitoritems(suchaspH,BOD,andheavymetals)at therequired frequency, taking intoaccount thedifferent typesofraw materials. We have confirmed that every item is within the legally required environmentalstandards. Turning to waste, we conduct industrial waste treatment in compliance with theWasteManagementandPublicCleansingActandrelatedordinances,andrecyclecertainrecyclablematerials,suchascardboard.To date, we have confirmed that none of our environmental impacts has exceeded statutoryenvironmentallimitsasaresultoftheaforementionedresearchandproductionactivities.Upuntilthispoint,wehavealsoappropriatelymanaged theweightofwastematerials, recycling rate,andothermetrics. However, data convertible to weight has not been obtained, but we plan to gather thisinformationfromFY2019.

InitiativesfortheWorkplaceEnvironment

Introducing flexible working systemstorealizeworkstylereformsWebelievethatworkandprivatelifeareboth important, and have introduced aflexible working system that will helprealize workstyle reforms, such as aflextime system and allowing employeesto use their annual paid leave in hourlyincrements.

SupportingemployeesraisingchildrenWe have provided an in-house daycarecenter at the Research Institute foremployees who are raising children. Inaddition,weprovideamonthlychildcaresubsidy to support employees who areunable to use the in-house childcarecenter due to their work location. Inrecognition of these initiatives, wereceived the Kurumin certification fromthe Ministry of Health, Labour andWelfareinJuly2018.

Introducing of AED (automatedexternaldefibrillator)We have installed AEDs* at eachoffice, plant, and the ResearchInstitute.*AED: A medical device that returns anelectrical shock to a heart that hasundergone ventricular fibrillation (a statein which the heart shakes finely andcannotsendbloodtotheentirebody).

HelpingtocreateaworkenvironmentwithanopenandgoodatmosphereWe introduced a subsidy program for social events within departments in order to encourage closerrelationshipsbetweencoworkers.Theprogramisappliedtoawiderangeofeventssuchasdepartmentwelcome parties for new recruits, and farewell parties for those who are transferring from thedepartmentorretiring.InNovembereachyear,weholdaBeaujolaisNouveauwinetastingeventandayear-end party. Other events for creating a work environment with a good atmosphere include anannual lunchtimemeeting with the directors. Furthermore, our biannual companymagazine aims toencouragereaderparticipationbyrunningvariousfeatures.CreatinganidealworkplaceenvironmentwhereemployeescanworkcomfortablyAs an initiative to create an ideal workplace environment where employees can work healthily andcomfortably,weareencouragingtheuseofannualpaidleave.WealsoprovideGroupadministrationofinfluenzavaccinationsandsupportemployeesaged35andoverwhowishtoreceiveacomprehensivehealthcheck.Toimprovetheworkplaceenvironment,weholdamonthlySafetyandHealthCommitteemeetingandassist oneanother to implement anynecessary improvements.Wealsohavea teamofthree selected corporate physicians, including one who provides mental healthcare as a designatedmentalhealthcarephysician.Furthermore,insidetheResearchInstitute,wehavecreatedaspacecalled“JCROasis”whereemployeescangetamassageandrefreshthemselvesduringwork.InitiativestofosterasenseofbelongingwithinthecompanyAsacompanythatvaluespeople,weconductalong-serviceawardceremonyeachyearonourfoundinganniversaryinSeptember,anddistributecommemorativegiftstoallemployees.Wealsoholdafoundinganniversary golf tournament, in which many employees participate. In other initiatives, we observeValentineʼsDaybydistributingsweetsmadebya localHyogoPrefectureconfectionerycompanytoallemployees.

EnhancinghealthandwelfareIn preparation for its global development going forward, JCR conducts its annual Study Tour inEurope foremployeeswhohavebeeninJCRformorethanthreeyears.InFY2018,28participantsvisitedFranceandLuxembourg.InFY2019,40participantsaregoingtovisitItalyandLuxembourg.JCRalsostrivestoenhanceemployeebenefits,signingcontractswithseveraloutsourcingcompaniesthat support leisure pursuits or efforts to gain qualifications, as well as providing services foremployeesandtheirfamilies,suchaschild-raisingsupport.EnhancedtrainingprogramsJCR focuses its efforts on employee training, considering that improving employee skills leads togrowthforthecompany.IntheirfirstmonthafterjoiningJCR,newgraduaterecruitsattendgrouptraining,whichincludesbusinessetiquette,communicationskills,presentationsfromeachbusinessdivision, practical training at plants and the Research Institute, and accompanying medicalrepresentatives in thefield.Wealsoconductspecific training foreachemployeerankregularly,aswellasEnglishlanguagetraining.

CreatingworkplaceswherewomencanparticipateactivelyIn October 2018, JCR was recognized in the Third Annual HyogoWomenʼsActive ParticipationAwards for its efforts to expand career opportunities forwomen, raise the ratio of female employees in managerial positions (from5.8% in FY2012 to 10.3% in FY2018), establish in-house daycare facilities,andencouragetheparticipationofmaleemployeesinparentingactivities.Wealso received Eruboshi certification (Grade 2) from the Minister of Health,Labour and Welfare as an outstanding company with regard to promotingactive participation of women based on the Act on Promotion of Women'sParticipationandAdvancementintheWorkplace.

JCR has established a Compliance Committee as an organization to implement and promotecompanymanagement in linewithsocialnormsandcorporateethicsaswellascompliancewithlaws and regulations. As a company that handles pharmaceutical products that concern peopleʼs health, JCR hasestablished procedures for risk control in each of its divisions along with ascertaining risk incorporate activities.
