Sustainability is Good for Business
PURCHASING
Introduction
– Our customers are looking for accommodation that is working to improve its sustainability and reduce negative environmental impact
– The hotel is making efforts to reduce its water and energy consumption and to minimise the production of waste
– All departments are able to contribute to this effort
Purchasing – Energy Reduction
– Invest in energy efficient lamps – CFLS and LEDs in place of tungsten
– These not only use significantly less energy then incandescent lamps but last much longer (reducing maintenance) and don’t give out so much heat (reducing air conditioning load).
– When purchasing new equipment, investigate low energy alternatives.
– A higher cost price is often quickly offset by lower running costs
Purchasing – Water Reduction
– Buy low flow shower heads, tap aerators and flow restrictors to limit water use in guest rooms
– When updating toilets, purchase ones with a dual flush mechanism
– Invest in installing rain water collection systems for watering grounds
Purchasing– Waste Minimisation
– Source goods from retailers whose product comes in reusable containers
– Use local suppliers where possible
– Purchase goods in bulk to reduce the amount of packaging
– Buy cleaning solutions in concentrated form
– Avoid purchasing single-use disposable items
– Take longevity into account when making purchasing decisions
– Where possible reduce the need for plastic bags
– Purchase cloth bags for linen collection– Bins that do not need plastic liners etc.
Case Study - Cyprus
– Impacts– 100,000 fewer plastic cups disposed of than in the previous year –saving of
almost €2000, therefore paying off the investment in a matter of months
– Purchased 50% fewer bin liners, saving over €300
– A survey of over 100 guests showed that no one found that the project had a negative impact on their holiday experience
Ascos Beach Hotel, Paphos
– Actions– Aimed to reduce plastic waste across
the hotel
– Purchased 3000 durable plastic cups (at a cost of €867 )
– Stopped using a bin liner in guest room bins, only in bathroom bins
Action Planning
– Discuss what options there are for reducing energy, water and waste in your operations
– create a list of potential actions
– who needs to be involved to ensure that these actions can take place?
– how quickly do you anticipate these actions being put into place?
– will any further training be required?
MAKINGA WORLDOF DIFFERENCE…
