Advanced Learning Loans

FlexEd Higher Education Loans

Adults over the age of 24 looking to study at Sussex Downs College are entitled to an ‘Advanced Learning Loan’ to help support their learning. The Government has introduced the 24+ Advanced Learning Loans which provides a means for anybody aged 24 and over to improve their qualifications through access to further education. If you are aged 24 and above, studying level 3 and 4 qualifications including A Levels, Access to Higher Education diplomas and certificates, you can apply for the loan to help pay fees.

For courses branded throughout this brochure as 24+ Advanced Learning Loans you may be able to apply for a loan even if your course has already started, though you must apply before it finishes. Receiving the loan doesn’t depend on household income or credit history. You start repaying your loan in the April after you complete or leave your course – and only then if earnings are more than £21,000 per year.

Professional DevelopmentWe offer a choice of short courses aimed at keeping your staff up to date in the latest practices from appraisal training to time management and food safety to marketing. All courses are ideal for a range of staff, sectors and roles and are paced in sucha way to allow you to enhance your knowledge,ask questions and enjoy your learning experience with our friendly, and highly experienced trainers.

Our courses are delivered at our Newhaven, Lewes or Eastbourne campuses, all of which are located in close proximity to public transport, including frequently running buses and trains. In this interactive workshop, participants will learn the characteristics of assertive behaviour and will be encouraged to examine their own beliefs and behaviours and see where they could benefit from becoming more assertive. The VTCT Level 3 Certificate in Beauty Therapy Studies (Massage) (QCF) is a technical level qualification that provides you with the knowledge, understanding and skills to work as a massage therapist either as an employee or in a self-employed capacity.

The content of this qualification is comprised of all the required elements to work effectively as a massage therapist including health and safety, client care and communication and body massage incorporating anatomy and physiology and client consultation skills. These units are all mandatory.

This certificated half-day course is ideal for GP surgeries, Medical centres, clinicians, and the general public. The training will be a practical session carried out by a clinician.

This CIEH accredited one-day course is ideal for smaller workplaces that present few health and safety risks, where a nominated person is required to take charge of first aid in the event of an accident or illness. In larger organisations where there is a fully qualified First Aider, an emergency first aider with First Aid training could offer additional support, especially where there may be a number of floors or buildings, or where work is operated in shifts. The course will include an insight into relevant legislation and the duties as required by such legislation, such as a first aid kit and simple record keeping.

This Health and Safety Executive (HSE) approved 3-day course provides a First Aid at Work certificate that is valid for 3 years. The course will include the role of the first aider, managing an emergency through to dealing with specific injuries and situations.

Please note a first-aider can attend a First Aid at Work Refresher course up to three months before the expiry date on their certificate. The new certificate will then be effective from that expiry date. Any first-aider, who is not able to complete a requalification course, will be required to retake a full First Aid at Work course.

Paediatric First Aid (CIEH Level 2) / £180

This two-day course, supported by the Paediatric First Aid Association, covers all topics required by Ofsted, child minders, nursery workers and teachers and is a mandatory requirement for those working with babies and under school age children.

The course is conducted over two six hour sessions. Students need to be fi t and able to undertake the practical aspects of the course without risk of harm. The course content is designed to cover conditions and emergencies that are paediatric related. It has on-going assessment of the students over the two days with no formal fi nal assessment. Certifi cates issued are valid in the workplace for three years.

To attend this course you must have a Level 2 Hair Dressing qualification. The course is designed to enhance cutting skills and to improve confidence in using clippers and razors. On successful completion you will gain a certificate of unit credit towards the VTCT level 2 qualification.

There are two types of Apprenticeships that the college deliver:

• Day release• Work based

Day release involves your employee attending college for one day a week. However, many Apprenticeships are work-based, delivered entirely from your premises, with

our teams visiting the Apprentice in their work place..

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

For Apprentices aged 16-18 full government funding is provided for their training and for anyone aged 19 and over training is subsidised. Our team of Account

Managers will advise you fully on the funding available.

HOW TO APPLYFOR AN APPRENTICESHIP

OPTION 1: FINDING AN EMPLOYER

You may want to find your own Apprenticeship, based upon the Apprenticeships that the college o�er. A full list of these Apprenticeships can be found online at www.sussexdowns.ac.uk/courses/apprenticeships/apprenticeships-index/

To generate an Apprenticeship you can be sent a CV template, an example cover letter template, and tips on how to gain an Apprenticeship by the college’s Employer and Recruitment Advisor.

OPTION 2: REGISTER WITH THE EMPLOYER AND RECRUITMENT ADVISOR

Sussex Downs College students can register their details on the Recruitment Team’s Talent Bank. If a vacancy meets your designated sector, location and wage, it will be sent to you via email, along with a blank application form. Suggestions will be made if areas need to be improved. To register please contact Sussex Downs College’s Recruitment Team (030 300 39474) and request an Apprenticeship Enquiry Document.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF DOING AN APPRENTICESHIP?

● Earning money; The chance to earn around £117,000 more than those who have not completed an Apprenticeship, over the course of your career;

● The ability to progress, whether that is it go onto a higher Apprenticeship or gain a full-time job within the same organisation;

TRAINEESHIPS For those of you that are not quite ready for an Apprenticeship, there is the option of a Traineeship. Traineeships are designed for ages 16-24, and are in place to give you the skills so that you are ready to apply for an Apprenticeship.
