Susceptibility of Silverleaf Whitefly to
Group 4 Insecticides

Silverleaf whitefly,
Bemisia tabaci biotype B
Life cycle ~ ● about 3 wks from egg to adult.
● adults can live up to 2 wks.
● est. 5 wks btwn generations.
Tomato yellow leaf curl virus –
vectored by silverleaf whitefly
Managing TYLCV
● Destroy crop residues and
other virus reservoirs
● Complete destruction of
plant is necessary.
● New growth from flamed or herbicided
fields can be highly viruliferus.
Reflective mulches repel whiteflies early in the
season.
Managing TYLCV
Varieties of tomato tolerant of TYLCV are available.

Neonicotinoids, Closer, and Sivanto all have the
same mode of action:
Nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR)
agonists

Bayer has carried out
extensive tests to confirm
that Sivanto poses minimal
risk to honeybees and
bumblebees.

silverleaf whitefly to three established
neonicotinoid insecticides and one new
butenolide insecticide.

Methods
●Systemic cotton petiole bioassay
●Four insecticides
●Six concentrations: 0, 1.2, 4.7, 18.8, 75, 300 ppm.
●Field populations are compared to susceptible laboratory
colony.
●Mortality is measured 24, 48 and 72 hours after treatment
Cotton petioles
take up insecticide
treatments for 24
hours.
Admire: 29.4 mg ai /plant
Sivanto: 14.3 mg ai /plant
Platinum: 13.4 mg ai /plant
Venom: 37.2 mg ai /plant
