Susan B. Anthony

Birth and early life

• Susan B. Anthony was born on February 15, 1820, near Adams, Massachusetts.

•  She was one of eight children, although only six lived to be adults.

• When she was between fifteen and sixteen, she went to other people's houses to teach children.

• She liked the chance to earn money of her own.

Her Family

• In 1838, her father lost his cotton mill business because of the financial depression in the United States.

• And in the spring of 1839 he had to sell their house . They moved to a town called Hardscrabble.

• One day, she was teaching next to New York City and she heard some people talking about getting rid of slavery she agreed with the idea, as her dad did. And she believed that all people are equal. In 1849, when she came back home to Rochester, her father start inviting his friends that wanted to talk about getting rid of slavery. So, Susan listened to her father and his friends that wanted to help slaves to find freedom.

Her work for the slaves

• In 1850, the abolition was becoming an important issue.• The people in North were against slavery, While the people in

South wanted to keep slavery.• Those who were against slavery were called abolitionists. A lot

of them were invited to the farm. • They all supported Susan B. Anthony in her work for women’s

rights.• In1856, the abolitionists were asking Susan to write and deliver

against the slavery. In 1865, their efforts will pay off with the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. constitution. Even the slaves were free they didn’t get the right to vote.

Goal and movements

Her goal • Her goal was to seek protection

for working women through trade unions.

• In 1853 Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton founded the Women's State Temperance Society with the goal of petitioning the State legislature to pass a law limiting the sale of liquor.

Popular movements • The women’s suffrage movement. • The right of women to vote was

first seriously proposed at a women's rights convention in Seneca Falls, NY , in 1848.

• Founded the National Woman's Suffrage Association in 1869 with life-long friend Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Together they worked for women's suffrage for over 50 years.

Popular Movement

• The movement achieve its goal by having the slaves free.

• She was worked with  Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Matilda Joslyn Gage.

• She was famous because she was helping the slaves to be free.

Susan B. Anthony’s Death

• She died on March 13, 1906.

• Susan B. Anthony died in her home in Rochester, New York of pneumonia and heart failure. Her last public words, "Failure is impossible," became the suffrage rallying cry.

Interesting Facts

• Long after Susan B. Anthony's death, Charlene Connors, who portrays her, became interested in women's history while working with a variety of women's organizations. She developed a multi-media presentation on the suffrage movement before joining Women in History.
