THE HEALTH EFFECTS OF RADIATION EXPOSURE

The calamity in Japan with possible meltdowns of the nuclear power station inFukushima is now a reality and a time-bomb waiting to happen. There is also the

possibility that radioactive particles can follow the jet streams to the S! "laska!#awaii and other countries.

$hen uranium-%&' nuclei are split in a nuclear reactor! various radioactive fissionproducts arise. The most harmful are iodine-(&(! caesium-(&)! strontium-*+ andplutonium-%&*. ,ust particles in the air with radioactive elements may be inhaled!deposited in the earth by rainfall and water! or enter the food chain via plants.

$hen the cells of the body are eposed to such radiation! free radicals areproduced. These free radicals or ions may impair cellular function and damagemay be caused to the ,N" in the cell nucleus! which carries the genetic

information for cellular replication! structure and function. t is now scientificallyrecogni/ed that such damage to the ,N" can cause cancer and other geneticabnormalities.

"s a #olistic health practitioner working in 0yprus! have recently beenbombarded with 1uestions from my own patients and readers of my blog2www.docgeorge.com3 as well as my articles 2www.naturaltherapycenter.com3

"s protecting oneself from radiation eposure is a large and comple topic! have written this e-4ook in an attempt to satisfy the layperson as well as thein1uisitive practitioner who is interested in helping their patients. The approach is

based on a holistic premise! as do not believe that there is one healing modalitythat can help the comple issue of radiation eposure.

Overall Health$eak organ systems! a poor immune system! high levels of toicity in the bodyfrom other heavy metals and enobiotics! an imbalanced p#! lots of internalinflammation from eating the wrong diet! smoking! drinking alcohol ecessively!lack of eercise and dehydration! is likely to make you more vulnerable toadditional stressors. So! if eposed to nuclear fallout! it is highly likely that youwill be weakened even further in these vulnerable regions of the body.

    t is best to prepare now by cleaning the body on different levels! as well astaking good 1uality multivitamin supplements to keep your supplies of nutrients toa high level. 5ou can see the outline of what to do in one of my articles entitled67s 5our 4ody in Need of a 8ood 0lean9: This is a very good starting point forimproving overall health;

    So where o we be!"n#

think it would be prudent to begin by trying to understand the various healtheffects that radiation eposure can have on the body < there are many factorsthat can affect the way symptoms develop including intensity of radiation! time

eposed and the current status of health of the individual.

"s radiation can adversely affect the body systemically < basically affecting allorgans and tissues < then there is no one substance that can help on all levels ofhealing. say this as there has been a lot of emphasis and focus on usingpotassium iodide as a radioprotective against all kinds of radiation. The truth isthat this will protect to a certain degree against radioactive iodine! but not againstradioactive cesium! strontium! uranium and others.

    Har$f%l Effe&ts of Ra"at"on E'(os%re on the )o*

=nce radiation enters the body it has the potential to damage every tissue andorgan in the body. #owever! the most vulnerable tissues are the fastest growingtissues of the body as radiation can do three times more damage during thegrowth phase of cells. 4one marrow which makes red blood cells are very fastgrowing cells! so is the developing fetus in the mother>s womb! as are childrenbecause their body cells are dividing rapidly due to growth < all these are etrasensitive to radiation eposure.=ther sensitive areas would be the testes and ovaries which can be renderedsterile with very small doses of radiation. The skin and the intestinal lining are

much more resilient while the most resistant cells are the brain cells becausethey grow the slowest.

,eath within a few hours can occur when there is sudden eposure to largedoses. ?posure to lower doses of radiation may lead to leukemias! cancers ofthe thyroid! brain! bone! breast! skin! stomach! and lung! cataracts or otheradverse health effects much later on in life. t may take a few weeks to a coupleof years to recover from lower radiation doses.

#eavy radiation eposure can lead to acute radiation sickness. The signs andsymptoms or radiation sickness( vary according to the dose of radiation and

tissues eposed! but the general symptoms include6

    Nausea and vomiting

    ,iarrhea

    $eakness

(This information was initially compiled mostly from survivors of the atomic bombblasts over Japan in (*@'.

"nemia 2low red blood cell count3

    #air loss 2usually from just the scalp3

    ,ecrease in platelets

The initial symptoms reported by the Japanese and "merican observers in (*@'were the loss of hair from the scalp! bleeding into the skin! inflammation of themouth and throat! vomiting! diarrhea! and fever.

Nausea and vomiting that appeared within a few hours after the eplosion wasfre1uently noted and while it usually subsided by the following morning!occasionally it continued for %-& more days. ,iarrhea of varying degrees ofseverity was also observed and in severe cases! it was fre1uently bloody.Tissues of the mouth and throat are likely to begin dying as the tissues breakdown with low white blood cell counts being the norm.

The syndromes of acute radiation illness can be divided into three categories!based on the amount of radiation dosage in total.

    The + Cate!or"es of A&%te Ra"at"on S"&,ness:

    1. The cerebrovascular (brain) syndrome< this is when the totaldose of radiation is etremely high! eceeding -. to +. /*-." person withcerebrovascular 2brain3 syndrome rapidly develops confusion! nausea!vomiting! bloody diarrhea! and shock. $ithin hours their blood pressurefalls due to heart and circulatory damage! accompanied by the inability tocoordinate gait! sei/ures and coma. Batients often die within hours2usually within the first two days3 after severe radiation eposure.

2The gray 2symbol6 8y3 is the international system of units 2S3 unit of absorbedradiation dose of ioni/ing radiation and is defined as the absorption of one jouleof ioni/ing radiation by one kilogram of matter 2usually human tissue3.

n particular! the cerebrovascular syndrome has & phases6 the first periodof nausea and vomitingC then listlessness! drowsiness! apathy andconfusionC and finally! tremors! convulsions! sei/ures! coma! with deathusually within a few hours. Since the cerebrovascular syndrome is alwaysfatal! treatment is geared toward providing comfort by relieving pain!

    aniety! and breathing difficulties.

    2. The gastrointestinal syndromeoccurs when the radiation dose issmaller but still high! and is due to the effects of radiation on the cellslining the digestive tract. ,oses in the 0.1-. /* range affect theintestines! stripping their lining and leading to death within & months dueto vomiting! diarrhea! starvation! and infection.

Dictims receiving E-(+ 8y all at once usually escape an intestinal death!but instead face bone marrow failure and death within % months from lossof blood and the protection against infection provided by white blood cells.

The symptoms of people suffering from gastrointestinal syndrome includenausea! vomiting and diarrhea that can lead to severe dehydration!diminished blood plasma volume and vascular collapse that can result indeath within &-(+ days. Severe nausea! vomiting! and diarrhea begin %-(% hours after eposure to 2 /*or more of radiationC and the symptomsmay lead to severe dehydration! but they usually resolve themselves after% days.

There will be a period of feeling well! after which there is often a return ofbloody! severe diarrhea which will produce a state of severe dehydration!so plenty of fluids and minerals is important during this time. The intestinescontain a variety of good and bad bacteria which will begin invading therest of the body resulting in severe infections.t is important that people with the gastrointestinal syndrome takeintravenous fluids if available! or regular drinks of pure mineral water s ability toscavenge radiation-induced free radicals. The plant>s immuno-stimulatory actionis also said to prevent damage to the cells.

    POTASSIU3 IODIDE

The media and nternet recently are full of reports of the benefits of usingpotassium iodide 2R3 tablets after a radioactive incident.

Botassium iodide2R3 contains )E.'O iodine and the thyroid gland uses iodinepresent in the blood to help it produce the hormone thyroine! whether it isnormal or radioactive iodine-(&( from nuclear accidents < the uptake of latter willlead to cancer of the thyroid a few years later.

f the thyroid has stored enough normal iodine! then it will not absorb radioactiveiodine and this is the logic used for taking R in a radiation emergency.

Saturating your thyroid with non-radioactive iodine can therefore possibly limit therisk of damage to your thyroid gland because the R 2potassium iodide3 suppliesenough non-radioactive iodine that your thyroid glands absorbs it and becomes

saturated before any radioactive iodine 2from fallout or other contamination3presents itself.

t is important to begin taking the R as soon as there is a radiation emergency e "n &ars7: There is disclosed a patentedmethod of protecting animals including humans against ioni/ing radiation by

The oral administration of sodium bicarbonate diminishes the severity of thechanges produced by uranium in the kidneys. The kidneys are usually the firstorgans to show chemical damage upon uranium eposure. =ld military manualssuggest doses or infusions of sodium bicarbonate to help alkalini/e the urine ifthis happens. ?posure to radiation causes a cascade of free radicals that wreak havoc on thebody. Gadiation decimates the bodys supply of glutathione. Nebuli/ation is oneof the best ways to 1uickly increase glutathione levels as is the use of glutathionerectal suppositories. The main cancer risk from inhaled uranium oide and other

airborne radioactive particles is from tiny insoluble particles lodged deep in thelungs. Thats a good reason to nebuli/e both glutathione and bicarbonate directlyinto the lungs and one must wonder why governments and health officials haventsponsored this.

ranium oide can be inhaled by soldiers and civilians! it sticks to the lining ofthe lungs! it is taken up by cells of the immune systems and gets into lymphglands! bone! brain! hormone producing glands! ovaries and testes. t stays inthese organs for many decades and is only very slowly ecreted in urine.Nebuli/ation topically treats the lung tissues allowing for best effect oncontaminated lung tissues.

    PROTECTIN/ A/AINST RADIATION =ITH FATT ACIDS

n the field of radiation therapy! there is a man whose work is hardly known!famous cancer doctor ?manuel Gevici! P,. n a lecture entitled 7The nfluence ofrradiation pon nsaturated Fatty "cids!: presented in Aondon in (*'+ to the

Sith "nnual 0ongress of Gadiology! ,r. Gevici eplained that the effects ofsevere radiation poisoning tend to increase over time due to a cascading effect ofmore and more fatty acids becoming abnormal. #is paper shows thatabnormally-conjugated trienic fatty acids 2leukotrienes3 induce radiation illness.

Gevici was one of the first pioneers to do substantial research in this area!concentrating on the study of lipids and radiation. n this particular lecture and inhis monographs! Gevici correctly described the inflammatory effects ofleukotrienes 2trienic conjugated fatty acids3 and their derivation from arachidonicacid! research that was paralleled decades later by 4engt Samuelsson! '* whowon a Nobel Bri/e for the discovery.

$hat happens is that if there is a fatty acid imbalance! a small bit of radiationdamage will actually grow worse over time until the effects are unstoppable.Gevici developed an o'al"& a&" "ne' to measure abnormal fatty acids in thebody! and determined that once this inde reached a critical level! death wascertain.

$hen the SSG suffered the 0hernobyl accident and many doctors werevolunteering their services to perform bone marrow transplants for the radiationvictims! Gevici felt that the approach of using bone marrow transplants to saveSoviet radiation victims would not work but was actually doomed to failure

because! :So long as 2abnormal fatty acids3 are in the body! they will act againsttransplanted bone marrow cells.:

n other words! for the acute radiation sickness hematopoietic syndrome wherebone marrow transplants are considered! Gevici basically said you have to checkfatty acid conditions to see whether that approach would be successful.

Gesearch on animals has suggested that a variety of cytokines might be usefulfor the hematopoietic syndrome that often re1uires this bone marrow therapy! butmost of them are not currently available or yet approved for human use.

"nyway! Gevici believed that the best antidote for the radiation poisoning was afatty acid antagonist and he developed a product! n1b%tanol! which has beenproved particularly useful in treating radiation burns.
