Transportation

The public transportation system in Austria is well organized and known for itsreliability. The flip side of this is that many connections stop their service in thelate evening hours. The prices are reasonable and the transportation networkis well developed.

CabsCabs or taxi’s are ratherexpensive in Austria. Ifyou get in a cab, you willbe automatically chargeda start fee. This fee variesin each city. Also the pri-ces for the kilometer canbe quite different, depen-ding on the taxi com-pany. In general it is agood advice to negotiatea fixed price before youstart your journey withthe cab.

BusThe bus system in Aus-tria is mostly designedfor local transportation. Therefore buses are notthat interesting for ex-change students.

The train offers a moreattractive and good valuealternative to travel inAustria.

CurrencyThe currency in Austriais the Euro. The Euro isthe official currency of22 European states (16member states plus 6 EUcountries).

It was introduced in1999 and became the of-ficial currency in 2002.Besides the Dollar theEuro is the most impor-tant currency in theworld.

BanksKrems itself has manybanks. The city houses 9banks (with 23 bran-ches) of many differentlocations (also withATMs) throughout thecity.

In Austria paying cash isstill very popular. CreditCards are rarely usedand most of the shopsusually don’t acceptthem due to high costsfor the shop itself. Ne-vertheless Austrians douse debit cards. Debitcards are plastic cardswhich are linked to adebit account (“Giro-konto”) at an Austrianbank and can be used innearly any shop (also towithdraw money atATMs). This gives you abetter cost control than

paying with a credit cardwith a higher withdra-wal limit.

Paying abroad withthose debit cards is usu-ally possible as they sup-port maestro cardfunctions (if you find the“maestro”-symbol onyour card it is valid towithdraw money in fo-reign countries). There-fore you can use themto withdraw money inother countries (addi-tional costs apply here).Nevertheless youshould contact yourbank advisor for moredetailed information asthose might vary frombank to bank.

SfS InsiderStudent accounts areusually for free. Fur-

thermore most banksoffer special assis-

tance for internationalstudents.

Saving accounts (“Spar-buch”) is a very popularway of saving in Austriawhich offers the custo-mer a safe investment ofmoderate interest rates.Investment in funds orshares is not as com-mon as in other coun-tries. Saving accounts forexchange students whostay in Austria for 1 or 2semesters are not veryuseful. Therefore a che-cking account is suffi-cient.

Studying in Krems willquite likely require anaccount at a local bank.Choosing a bank is nota crucial issue. Mostbanks are offering equalservices also due to mi-nimum regulations fromthe state. Applicationprocesses for getting anaccount are similar aswell. Usually you have toprovide the following in-formation:

Payment slips / Zahl-scheineNot relevant in manycountries the paymentslip or also called “Zahl-schein” survived in Aus-tria. During your stay inAustria you might beconfronted with thispayment method seve-ral times.

You will get this slip forexample when you getan invoice for a maga-zine-subscription. Then

you fill out your name, address, account num-ber as well as the BLZ(bank code) of you andthe 2nd party as well asthe amount you want topay. This might be un-usual for some interna-tional students.

Imagine: Mario Bergerwants to transfer €200(for the rent Decem-ber) on Florian Rinnof-ner’s bank account. Theslip would look like this:

The red slip is moreimprtant. The blue slipwill stay in your poses-sion.

If you have problemswith the German onyour slip the bankagents are happy to helpyou with your request.

Fees for letters canrange from € 0,65 / 1,40(EU/Worldwide). Thoseprices vary according totheir size (regular: 50g). Prices for parcels usu-ally include a basic fee(around €12) with addi-tional costs for each ki-logram (e.g. 0,75 - 6,50).Those Kilogram-pricesvary due to differentzones.

The postman alwaysrings twice… but incase you shouldn’t be

home by that time heor she leaves you a yel-low form which informsyou that you receivedmail, were absent andcan pick it up at thenearest post office. This,of course, just happensif you receive a parcelor a registered letterwhich cannot simply beplaced in your post box.By handing the paper inat the Krems office youwill receive your mail.

Sending money by mail

is a possibility to receivea larger amount ofmoney. NeverthelessSfS recommends using awire transfer via anIBAN number to yourAustrian account. Thisresults in additionalcosts but is safer.

The Austrian Post alsooffers a banking optionwith its PSK Bank. Thisis mainly attractive forsaving accounts andother saving plans.

How to tip

Compared to manyother states (like in theUSA) waiters get atleast a minimum wage. Therefore tips in Aus-tria usually lie around5% of the total amount. Also many Austriansjust round up to thenext higher amount(instead of 9.70 € theyjust round up to 10 €). Where to tipTipping in restaurants, bars or in service areas

in general is very com-mon. Tipping after gro-cery shopping on theother hand is very un-usual. Also in othershops (eg. buying shoes, clothing or electronics)giving tip is not com-mon and usually raises“weird looks”.

Paying on time

As mentioned before inthe Survival Guide Aus-trians are people whoare very into punctua-

lity. This fact can also beseen at the paying disci-pline. Paying on time is acommon practice.

Period of Payment

The period of paymentsin Austria varies fromoccasion to occasion. Aspecific deadline is usu-ally given in the invoice(if applicable) or in anyother confirmation.Average and also verypopular periods are 2or 3 weeks.

Nevertheless, especially when you arefrom outside the EU, anadditional private healthinsurance which coversall aspects your nationalinsurance does not sup-port might be a goodsolution should youever have an insurancecase. Therefore consul-ting one of the big insu-rance agencies in

Austria after you arrivewould be an option.

Household InsuranceHousehold insurancesare a way of ensuring, that you and your pos-sible flat/roommates arecoverd when actionsoccur like fire, water da-mage, burglary andmore. Austrian insu-rance agencies alsooffer special student in-surances which usuallycover most commoncauses of household ac-cidents at a lowmonthly rate.

Healthcare

Doctors

The Austrian health sys-tem as in any other statein the world can be avery complex thing. Ne-vertheless patients aretreated the same nomatter where they arefrom. So if you have anaccident (no matter if inthe kitchen or on thestreet) you get the sameprofessional treatmentas an Austrian. In case ofan accident you do nothave to get back home, get your passport or ID.This is not required byAustrian emergencyrooms. For EU-citizens costs willbe covered through themandatory health insu-rance. Therefore the hos-pitals need your EHIC(European Health Insu-rance Card).

Should you need to stayin the hospital a patient’scontribution of 10.78€/day has to be paid bythe patient. Neverthelesssome insurances (e.g.some travel insurances)can cover these costs aswell.

With Non-EU-Citizensthe cost issue gets a littlebit more difficult. Eventhough you might haveinsurance the Austrianhospitals are required toask you for paymentahead. In this case youhave to pay for yourtreatment which can berefunded by your healthinsurance at home.

students is the outpa-tient unit (Ambulanz). Ifyou have any medicalemergencies, please donot hesitate to go there.Help in the “Ambulanz”will be provided withlittle administrative ef-forts. The hospital also has ahelicopter at its disposal,so that in case of veryserious injuries anybodycan be taken to one ofthe big hospitals inVienna.

and contracts are availa-ble from different provi-ders. The big players onthe Austrian mobilephone market are A1, T-mobile, Telering, Drei andOrange, further there isa growing number of lowbudget providers such asYesss and Bob.

The advantage of a bigplayer is that there is va-riety of information andsupport accessible. Youcan easily receive infor-mation about the diffe-rent offers and contractsthrough the providerstores, which are situa-ted in the town centeror in the Bühl Center. Toget overall informationabout the different pro-viders visit an electronicgadget store such asHartlauer, Niedermeyer

or Media Markt. Theseshops sell all contracts ofthe main providers andhelp you with informa-tion. Please be aware thatthe low budget providerYesss is only sold via thelow budget retailerHofer.

The decision between acontract with a minimumterm of subscription anda prepaid depends highlyon your requirements.Just be aware that theminimum term of agree-ment is normally about 2years, therefore the pur-chase price of the mobilephone is lower. In caseyou choose a long termcontract check if your fa-vored provider offers aneasy contract exit, incase you leave the coun-try.

Another important pointto consider is the roa-ming fee. Probably youplan to travel throughEurope in your sparetime, be aware that yourAustrian provider willcharge roaming fees forthe service abroad.

GreetingGreeting in Austria isvery common and isusually used more oftenthan in other states. Therefore don’t be sur-prised to get greeted bypeople you have neverseen before even in ele-vators.

Formality / InformalityAustrians, especiallyelder Austrians are verysensitive about how youtalk to them. German it-self has 2 forms of“you”. The formal “Sie”which you usually usewhen you first meet orif the counterpart didn’toffer you the “Du”-

word yet. “Du” is thesecond “You” and isused for friends orpeople you alreadyknow very well.

TitlesTitles in Austria are avery strange subject.Young Austrians careless and less aboutthem. Neverthelessolder Austrians (40+)and especially thosewho have honorary tit-les or are active in thegovernment love andfurthermore request tobe greeted with theirofficial title. So neverforget to greet a “Bun-desrat”, “Bürgermeis-ter” or a Doctor byher/his title.

Talking with AustriansIn nearly every culturethere are some thingsyou better not talkabout. Austrians don’tlike to talk about sala-ries and politics. Thetopic of salary is usuallyconsidered to be ratherpersonal and Austriansfeel uncomfortable tal-king about it. Politics it-self is not taboo as longas you don’t ask howAustrians vote. Austri-ans consider preferenceof parties also ratherpersonal and don’t wantto be confronted with itin a discussion.

Shopping hours are alsodifferent than in someother countries. Manyshops close betweennoon and 2pm forlunch. Also most ofthem close at 6 pmwhile most offices al-ready call it a day at 5pm. Banks are not openon weekends. Never-theless Saturday is themajor shopping day ofthe week. Sundays are a“national treasure“.Therefore just restau-rants, bars or museumsopen on Sundays.

Floors

Don’t be confusedwhen an Austrian meetsup with you at the 2ndfloor of the Piaristen-gasse. In Austria unlikein some other countriesthe 2nd floor is actually

the 3rd floor. Why? Be-cause Austrians have a“Ground Floor” the socalled “Erdgeschoss”which is the 1st floor ofevery building. The“Austrian” 1st floor isthe floor above the“Ground floor” – there-fore the 2nd floor.

Electricity

Austria’s electronic pro-ducts are made for 220-volt AC, 50HZ, which ispretty common forEurope. NeverthelessAustria uses plug-inswhich might not fit foryou cable in your home-town. Therefore we re-commend buyingadapters for your lap-tops or other devicesyou might want to takewith you.

Credit Cards

Credit Cards are widelyaccepted in stores inAustria. Please look forthe typical signs (e.g.VISA, MasterCard, ...) orask the cashier. In barsand restaurants it is alittle bit more difficult. Please ask before yourmeal if you can pay withCredit Card. Please alsoalways control your de-duction. If you need toinactivate your card, please have a look atchapter “Importantphone numbers”, whereyou can find your emer-gency number.

Besides unique soils and ideal climatic conditi-ons, the quality of wine here is attributable first andforemost to the work in the vineyards. Krems wine-makers set great store by ecological, natural and en-vironmentally friendly methods of production..

Short remark

Due to the heavyamount of informationthat we actually couldpost here about everycity, town area and soforth we decided to keepour focus on Krems andVienna.

If you really want to getinto it and want to ex-plore even the smallestpart of this country it isprobably a good idea togo for a professionalguide like „The LonelyPlanet“.

What we provided youwith were simply somemost important and inour view really good andnice spots that you actu-ally should see while be-eing here.

Of course if you have anyquestions feel free tocontact us at any time!
