Q1. Do you use social media to deliver services in your library? (such as current awareness, monitoring clientsand prospects etc.)

1 Use Twitter to monitor clients Jun 27, 2012 8:49 AM

2 Lexis Publisher Alerts Jun 27, 2012 7:02 AM

3 I use it to monitor items of interest to research staff, it's for internal library useonly.

Jun 27, 2012 6:16 AM

4 Flickr, YouTube, Twitter Jun 27, 2012 6:13 AM

5 To locate foreign & hard-to-find materials for patrons Jun 26, 2012 3:15 PM

6 If you consider RSS, otherwise no. Jun 26, 2012 2:37 PM

7 We use it mostly for marketing and to look cool, but also to disseminateinteresting information that may not be appropriate for email. We also searchsocial media sites for client mentions.

Jun 26, 2012 9:42 AM

8 But not as a standard practices. We have 'monnitored' twitter for tweets on aspecific topic

Jun 25, 2012 3:42 PM

9 We find info/news on Twitter and then put it in an email. Jun 22, 2012 8:02 AM

1 To keep up to date with professional associations Jun 26, 2012 3:15 PM

2 meet up option Jun 26, 2012 2:37 PM

3 Researching specific topics and CI environmental monitoring Jun 26, 2012 2:32 PM

4 I use it in my personal life, but not for work. Jun 22, 2012 9:04 AM

5 To find information about people and companies Jun 22, 2012 8:43 AM

6 Focused use (through Hootsuite) for intelligence gathering Jun 22, 2012 7:47 AM

7 Nah. I use sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, Jigsaw, Spokeo, as corporateintelligence tools, to find out more about people and businesses, than theyrealize they're giving away for free.

Jun 22, 2012 6:15 AM

8 Following personal interests Jun 21, 2012 3:19 PM

Q3. Social media is a passing fad?

1 It's part of our culture. Jun 27, 2012 10:09 AM

2 I haven't really seen anything go away so I figure it's here to stay. Jun 27, 2012 8:49 AM

3 I think parts of it are but other tools will be adopted by the majority of youngusers. Still out on how much coporate america or law firms will use some of thetools.

Jun 27, 2012 8:22 AM

4 I'm pretty sure you can't put the genie back in the bottle. Jun 27, 2012 7:27 AM

5 Social Media remains an evolving tool, but it has too much mass to be a fad. Jun 27, 2012 7:02 AM

6 I think technology is so ingrained in our society today it will not go away onlyincrease.

Jun 27, 2012 6:44 AM

7 People are too used to the instant gratification of social media. It might changeand morph into something else, but it will always be there.

Jun 27, 2012 6:16 AM

8 I think it's a great way to connect with people and is only getting better. Jun 27, 2012 6:14 AM

9 As a Library tool, I believe most social media (Facebook, Pinterest) is a fad;however, user-generated content from places like Twitter and YouTube may beuseful for research/current awareness purposes.

Jun 27, 2012 6:13 AM

10 I think it will evolve over time, but still be a viable communication method. Jun 27, 2012 5:53 AM

11 It may or may not be. There are many ways to communicate and I am not surewhich way will dominate.

Jun 27, 2012 5:38 AM

12 It may drastically change over time, but I don't think that it will go away..... Jun 27, 2012 5:04 AM

13 Our firm has not yet embraced Twitter or Facebook. Jun 26, 2012 7:13 PM

14 I kind of wish it was but it is here to stay. Jun 26, 2012 3:58 PM

15 It may change format, but I think people enjoy the quickness and the connectivitythat it provides.

Jun 26, 2012 3:15 PM

16 But I think that the most effective way of using it has yet to be identified. Justbecause you have a tool does not mean it should be used for everything andconstantly. "Stuff" gets lost in the white noise and people don't always discernwell when it is best used.

Jun 26, 2012 2:49 PM

17 It will form another information stream. Jun 26, 2012 2:37 PM

18 It has transformed society. It will continue to evolve but it won't disappear. Jun 26, 2012 2:36 PM

19 The tools we use will change but not the new behaviors that we are seeing withyounger generations.

Jun 26, 2012 2:32 PM

20 Not a fad, but unsure of use in the industry Jun 26, 2012 2:32 PM

21 Regardless of whether it is or isn't, any librarian who does not at least knowabout Twitter and its uses should fold up his/her tents and move on to an admin

Q3. Social media is a passing fad?

assistant job.

22 Who knows what is in store for the future but some form of social media will be apart of it.

Jun 26, 2012 7:09 AM

23 Not a fad, more a flavour - one of many ways to glean current awarenessinformation

Jun 25, 2012 3:42 PM

24 I THINK THAT NOW THAT FOLKS ARE USING IT THEY ARE ONLY GOINGTO WANT BETTER AND BROADER APPLICATIONS FOR USING IT.

Jun 25, 2012 3:38 PM

25 It could be. People are having less time keeping up with social media. Plus, Ithink people are concerned about their privacy and social media does not seemto protect it enough.

Jun 23, 2012 8:28 PM

26 Absolutely not, but firm policy doesn't support it; most social media sites areblocked by fire wall and firm devices don't allow social media apps....

Jun 22, 2012 2:39 PM

27 The concept is not a passing fad, some of the its instruments may be.Remember Friendster?

Jun 22, 2012 1:48 PM

28 It is being incorporated in our work as a good tool Jun 22, 2012 1:36 PM

29 People enjoy being social and using technology. It will remain a source ofinformation and background, although the audience may not stay as broad as itis now

Jun 22, 2012 7:47 AM

30 Social media isn't a fad, it's constantly developing! Jun 22, 2012 7:43 AM

31 It's too useful for professional purposes to disappear. Jun 22, 2012 7:42 AM

32 i think it's here to stay, but will continue to change and evolve at a very quickpace.

Jun 22, 2012 7:08 AM

33 It may fad a bit, but I believe it's hear to stay. People like to connect with eachother!

Jun 22, 2012 6:51 AM

34 Not a passing fad and likely to become more prevalent in the workplace as ameans of communication since it is used by the "young folks" as their mainsource of communication.

Jun 22, 2012 6:21 AM

35 The vehicles may change but the concept will remain. Jun 22, 2012 6:17 AM

36 I'm not sure Facebook and Twitter will be around in 10 years, but there will besomething we all use to cmmunicate in the same way.

Jun 22, 2012 6:17 AM

37 Like anything else that's new, it'll lead to the next thing....which might be "better".Social media is whatever you want it to be. It can be lots of things or have lots ofuses....or it can be nothing and ignored. I've ceased using RSS feeds and useTwitter for breaking news.

Jun 22, 2012 6:15 AM

38 I don't use any of it, but as an observer I suspect I will at some point. It willevolve, of course.

Jun 22, 2012 6:00 AM

Q3. Social media is a passing fad?

39 Social media is just an extension of how we communicate already. I think it's anatural development of communication technology.

Jun 22, 2012 5:07 AM

40 I think social media will be around for a very long time. In 5 years it will looknothing like Facebook or Twitter

Jun 21, 2012 4:28 PM

41 With the growth in smart phones, social media is becoming more ubiquitious Jun 21, 2012 3:19 PM

42 It 's hard to tell right now whether it is a fad, but it just seems that it won't bearound in 5-10 years as something new and better will come along that replacessocial media -- who knows what it will be.

Jun 21, 2012 3:17 PM

43 It has its place, but as too often with new technology, people jump on thebandwagon before they determine the possible benefits and limitations

Jun 21, 2012 2:38 PM

44 It's becoming the way we live now. For younger people, they're constantlyconnected & via more than one device simultaneously.

Jun 21, 2012 2:26 PM

45 I think it will evolve, but it's not over. Jun 21, 2012 2:16 PM

Q4. I see little use for social media in my library.

1 We are a law firm of 340 attorneys. Our new intranet (as Sharepoint portal) isserving in this function to a large extent.

Jun 27, 2012 11:38 AM

2 We aren't using it too much in our library, but that doesn't mean we aren'tthinking about the uses.

Jun 27, 2012 10:09 AM

3 We would need younger customers is order to invest the time and effort to rollout any adoptable social media tool. The generational issues make this effortnot worth it right now.

Jun 27, 2012 8:22 AM

4 I'm sure there is something to be done; I just don't know exactly what and how. Jun 27, 2012 7:27 AM

5 Research tips, location, and new sources pushed out close to the group or viaTwitter. just thinking off the cuff.

Jun 27, 2012 7:02 AM

6 More and more attorneys ask for it and new ways of getting info. Jun 27, 2012 6:44 AM

7 It helps me keep on top of breaking news and current trends & topics. It alsohelps me to get immediate help if I put up a "bat signal" to fellow librarians.

Jun 27, 2012 6:16 AM

8 I see a lot of potential for it but I haven't gone through the process ofimplementing.

Jun 27, 2012 6:14 AM

9 It is pointless to try to promote a private law library using social media sites likeFacebook because those applications are primarily used by people for fun, not toconduct business.

Jun 27, 2012 6:13 AM

10 My users mainly communicate via e-mail. Jun 27, 2012 5:53 AM

11 When people are bombarded with e-mail, facebook, twitter, voice mail and anyother means, they will tune out.

Jun 27, 2012 5:38 AM

12 I'm 2 yrs from retirement & see limited use for it in it's current form Jun 27, 2012 5:04 AM

13 Eventually we will catch up. Our firm has just hired a social media person inMarketing who I hope will bring us into the future.

Jun 26, 2012 7:13 PM

14 I have posted questions on relevant groups on LinkedIn and Facebook to locateobscure or foreign documents.

Jun 26, 2012 3:15 PM

15 Bill rates are too high for consultants/attorneys to be constantly interupted bytrivial matters, plus the issue with material confidentiality.

Jun 26, 2012 2:49 PM

16 I see a lot of need to find other means, but most of the people I work with don'tuse it and do not.

Jun 26, 2012 2:37 PM

17 It would be great but our IT department has everything so locked down that it'snearly impossible to implement any social media initiatives.

Jun 26, 2012 2:36 PM

18 We need to be on top of any information trend, source, fad, service, etc. Thesetools are just another way to gather information.

Jun 26, 2012 9:42 AM

19 Could be useful for engaging with digital natives and remaining relevant andcredible.

Jun 26, 2012 7:09 AM

Q4. I see little use for social media in my library.

20 Until we find better ways to harvest meaningful information from the torrent, wecannot take advantage of what might be useful for us to act upon or pass on.

Jun 25, 2012 3:42 PM

21 Not sure how is all works, but if it is a means for getting out information, I'll try it. Jun 25, 2012 3:38 PM

22 I use it for my own information to stay current. And as a second track atconferences.

Jun 25, 2012 1:04 PM

23 Unless the firm is going to have an initiative where attorneys are using socialmedia more, I don't think the audience is there for my library.

Jun 23, 2012 8:28 PM

24 But we're too understaffed to implement anything 'radical' Jun 22, 2012 2:39 PM

25 For the moment. Attorneys here aren't early adopters. Jun 22, 2012 1:48 PM

26 It can be a great tool to dissiminate information Jun 22, 2012 1:36 PM

27 Our firm has Yammer, but the group of users is small and it allows silos of socialactivity. We've tried it some but couldn't figure out how to manage referencequestions that roll in that way. People expect immediate and relatively publicresponsiveness on it and I couldn't integrate it into my existing workload.

Jun 22, 2012 9:04 AM

28 Right now. We don't have much of a user base yet. Jun 22, 2012 8:17 AM

29 What's wrong with e-mail? The last thing I need is 4 more places to rememberto check every day

Jun 22, 2012 7:54 AM

30 It has great potential for information gathering but little for marketing orinformation dissemination

Jun 22, 2012 7:47 AM

31 Our It set up and library service delivery do not lend themselves to theintegration of social media.

Jun 22, 2012 7:42 AM

32 It can be used as a research tool. I just see little use as an internal marketingtool in my small-law firm library.

Jun 22, 2012 7:10 AM

33 It's not somthing I see my attorneys wanting from the library, although it isprevelant in the outward facing firm.

Jun 22, 2012 7:08 AM

34 Depends on which platofrm. We use wikis increasingly, but adoption is slow. Jun 22, 2012 7:03 AM

35 If more of my attorneys were on Twitter I might use it more to push info, but Idefinitely use Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn for finding info on People,Companies and for keeping up to date in the profession.

Jun 22, 2012 6:51 AM

36 For right now, yes. E-mail and/or portal is still the preferred means ofcommunication.

Jun 22, 2012 6:21 AM

37 People are inundated with information. Hard to get them to read the emails wesend. Might appeal to a certain audience but not all.

Jun 22, 2012 6:17 AM

38 Most social media relies on: 1) constantly updated content - not sure we wouldreally have all that much to push out and 2) the willingness of the attorneys toconstantly be reading that content - which they wouldn't - they won't even read

Jun 22, 2012 6:17 AM

Page 16: Survey Social Media @ Law Firm Libraries

Q4. I see little use for social media in my library.

the current awareness emails they begged me for and 3) brevity - not all currentawareness can be reduced to 140 characters (not all of it SHOULD)

39 See no. 2. Jun 22, 2012 6:15 AM

40 Hey, I'm being phased out! I just do books. Jun 22, 2012 6:00 AM

41 We could be using it for the reasons listed above, but we're still trying to catch upto how we think our services should be.

Jun 22, 2012 5:07 AM

42 My attorneys are not tech savvy. Jun 21, 2012 4:28 PM

43 Until our firm lightens up its policies! Jun 21, 2012 3:19 PM

44 It's hard to have attorneys in my firm pay attention to the e-mails I send, so Idon't think they would pay attention to any postings in social media.

Jun 21, 2012 3:17 PM

45 Information overload. There are plenty of tools pushing info to our attorneysalready

Jun 21, 2012 2:38 PM

46 From comments in the catalog on books to another way to communicateinformation, this is an area we are looking to use in the library.

Jun 21, 2012 2:33 PM

47 We could do much with SM in promoting services, delivering services, etc. Jun 21, 2012 2:26 PM

48 There appear to be a number of pitfalls and I don't want to take the risks. Jun 21, 2012 2:16 PM

49 But I'm not sure how to implement it in a firm setting. Jun 21, 2012 2:13 PM

50 I use it for competitive intelligence Jun 21, 2012 2:05 PM

Page 17: Survey Social Media @ Law Firm Libraries

Q5. I check LinkedIn, Facebook and/or Twitter at least

1 Facebook once every three months Jun 27, 2012 8:22 AM

2 I use Linkedin & Facebook for info on litigants & corp. officials Jun 27, 2012 5:04 AM

3 Linked-in every 2 or 3 months - Not on other 2 Jun 26, 2012 2:49 PM

4 Not so much LinkedIn - usually only once a day, but I am on FB and Twitter allthe time.

Jun 26, 2012 9:42 AM

5 LinkedIn weekly Jun 25, 2012 3:42 PM

6 Once or twice a week. Jun 22, 2012 8:17 AM

7 maybe once every 2 weeks Jun 22, 2012 7:01 AM

8 I have FB and Twitter open all day. Jun 21, 2012 2:26 PM

Page 18: Survey Social Media @ Law Firm Libraries

Q6. My firm allows access to social media sites at work.

1 I had to request permission for our two research librarians to have access toFacebook & Twitter for legitimate work purposes. They often search forinformation about plaintiffs and expert witnesses.

Jun 27, 2012 11:38 AM

2 well they're not blocked and linkedin accounts are encouraged. Jun 27, 2012 7:02 AM

3 To library staff and marketing only Jun 27, 2012 6:35 AM

4 I have special permission to access Twitter. The entire firm has Linkedin. Onlylibrary research staff have Facebook.

Jun 27, 2012 6:16 AM

5 n/a I'm employed at a public university's law library Jun 26, 2012 3:19 PM

6 The sites are not blocked. Jun 26, 2012 2:49 PM

7 Sort of, if I kept facebook open I would get questions. I am allowed on occasionto check it without a problem. Same does not apply to linked in.

Jun 26, 2012 2:37 PM

8 Facebook yes, Twitter no Jun 25, 2012 10:10 AM

9 Except MySpace Jun 22, 2012 8:43 AM

10 For some people - have to prove a business need! Jun 22, 2012 8:02 AM

11 Have to get special pemission. Jun 22, 2012 6:17 AM

12 I use my own hardware. Visiting "social media" sites on firm-provided equipmentis not allowed.

Jun 22, 2012 6:15 AM

13 For work purposes Jun 21, 2012 4:28 PM

14 Mostly - I have to make a business case for the individual sites. Jun 21, 2012 3:26 PM

15 We can, but I am sure it is monitored for non-firm use Jun 21, 2012 2:38 PM

Q7. My firm has the following internal enterprise social media tools (select all that apply)

1 A new Sharepoint portal (launched May 15th). Jun 27, 2012 11:38 AM

2 Yammer Jun 27, 2012 7:24 AM

3 While the intranet has the capability to house blogs and wikis, the Sharepointinterface is so clunky that nobody bothers to use them.

Jun 26, 2012 2:36 PM

4 Some attorneys have their own blogs. We help them with source information. Jun 26, 2012 9:42 AM

5 Yammer Jun 25, 2012 3:42 PM

6 We use sharepoint, which includes wikis, blogs, and discussion boards, but no-one uses them.

Jun 22, 2012 7:54 AM

7 Internal e-mail lists. Jun 22, 2012 7:10 AM

8 We have Sharepoint which we use for our Intranet and which can be used fordiscussion boards and collaboration, but which we defintely don't take fulladvantage of.

Jun 22, 2012 6:51 AM

9 BUT - I wouldn't really call them enterprise, because the tools are only beingused by certain groups for certain groups.

Jun 21, 2012 3:19 PM

10 We use sharepoint pages to collaborate, though definitley there is room forgrowth

Jun 21, 2012 2:33 PM

11 They have some test wikis and a group of us have experimented with IM,microblogging.

Jun 21, 2012 2:26 PM

12 SharePoint, used on a limited basis. Jun 21, 2012 2:16 PM

Q10. What role do you think social media tools will play in your job and your profession as a librarian.

Jun 22, 2012 10:01 AM

47 I hope it has very little role honestly. I find the professional Twitter thingdistasteful and part of the erosion of the boundaries between work and personallife. I'd like to keep them separate thanks. I'm a millennial, btw.

Jun 22, 2012 9:04 AM

48 For now, I use it to find information about other entities. I expect in the next 5years that some of our attorneys will be open to tweeting and connecting with theinformation center via Twitter.

Jun 22, 2012 8:43 AM

57 Exposure through social media is likely to help me find my next position Jun 22, 2012 7:03 AM

58 There is too much personal info out there about each of us as it is, we don't needto add any extra. You just don't know who is monitoring it all.

Jun 22, 2012 6:17 AM

66 It is difficult to determine in our law firm. There are restrictions on the use ofsocial media, so it is not a tool that I currently use. Eventually this may change.

Jun 22, 2012 6:03 AM
