Chairman’s Reportby Lois Dunn

The Lazy Days of Summer haven’t been so lazy for the Chamber!

You all received your hard-copy newsletter in July with a calendar of great upcoming

events for July, August & September.

In July Chamber staff and some board members participated in the first Biz Walk! What fun it was to call on over 70 businesses in the downtown area to say “Thanks for being in business in Grand Junction!” and handing them some cookies. We feel that way about every business.

August 1: Watch for time & place – the City of Grand Junction is looking at zoning changes on over 4,000 properties. It is essential that you check this out. Your property could be one. Call the City if you don’t see the posting for this meeting.

August 3: Next Economic Development session at CMU focusing on Existing Business.

The local committee has been formed to look at the pros and cons of whether the Colorado National Monument should be a National Park. The organization meeting was well attended with many interests represented including representatives from Senator Udall and Congressman Tipton’s offices.

We don’t all check those Electronic Newsletters. Don’t overlook this one for the Chamber. Among other important items, The Business Barometer is a great addition for business:

Monthly Sales & Use Tax •Revenue ColletionBuilding Permits•MLS Statistics•Hotel/Motel Occupancy•

Mesa County Foreclosures•GJ Regional Airport•Labor Market Statistics•

The summer has been busy with many ribbon cuttings for new members, expanding, or moving. If you would like to attend these great events and encourage fellow businesses, email [email protected] and give us your e-mail address.

Thanks again Nathan Wallace for reminding us, in the July Newsletter, to hop on the Blue Band Wagon and Buy Local!

Loving Grand Junction,Lois Dunn, Chair

Take A Walk (with the Chamber!) In June the Chamber began a new activity aimed at thanking local businesses for being part of the economy and seeking input on how we can help them grow. Dubbed the Business Walk this effort was very successful and over 70 businesses were visited within 90 minutes. Another Business Walk is scheduled for Friday, August 26th from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM and we need about 20 volunteers to help us call on 100 businesses. This is an easy way for someone to get involved in the Chamber, make business contacts and do something nice for fellow business professionals. Each team of two people will be assigned a geographic region, given ten “cookie plates” and sent to call on ten businesses. At each call volunteers are asked to first thank the business for being there and then ask a couple of simple questions. To sign up for this very short term assignment email [email protected]. And, if you can’t make this one, don’t despair. The Chamber intends to do six business walks a year so you can mark your calendars for October 28th and sign up early for the next walk with the Chamber!

Blue Band Heroes In early July Blue Band Committee members distributed blue bands at the Farmers Market on Main Street, as they had done in the summer of 2010. But, a big difference was noted. This year people actually sought out the booth and asked for the blue bands. There was no need to explain how important it was to shop locally and support local businesses. People knew! Such widespread recognition for the program did not happen overnight. And, in fact, it would not have happened at all without the tremendous support the program was given by local media. The Chamber would like to publicly recognize and support the contributions of the following:

KREX • donated over 1400 public service announcements valued at over $50,000

KKCO • continues to donate on average 20 spots per month promoting blue band

KJCT • donated approximately 800 public service announcements

Cumulus Broadcasting •consistently delivers five shop local messages each day

We know there are other media that also helped us spread the message but simply don’t have their specific contributions to share. Thanks to all of you for making blue band a household concept. We also want to thank Cabela’s for donating a blue pop up canopy to use at future promotional and band distribution events. The Blue Band committee is working to create some new messages for area residents

focused around consumer and business testimonials on why the program is important and why they participate. If you would like to be part of the effort or know someone whose perspective should be recorded please email [email protected].

Solar Program Offers Chamber Members Discount The Grand Junction Area Chamber is pleased to announce that it has entered into an agreement with High Noon Solar to offer members rebates on installation of SunPower high-performance solar systems for their homes and businesses. This is in addition to other rebates and tax credits and is available to member businesses and their employees. “This is just one more tool in our toolbox for helping small businesses manage their overhead costs associated with powering their businesses,” noted Diane Schwenke, President/CEO of the Chamber. Small businesses can learn more about this program and others available to them by visiting the GreenBack$ program website, www.greenbacksproject.org.

Interested in Serving on the Chamber Board? The Nominating Committee of the Chamber Board of Directors is currently in the process of selecting a slate of new proposed directors to present to the membership and current Chamber Board for approval. There are five slots on the Board currently up for election this fall. Those selected will represent a cross section of the membership and their single four-year terms will begin January 1, 2012. Board members are expected to attend monthly Board meetings, serve as liaisons to other Chamber committees and attend as many Chamber functions as possible in order to stay in close contact with the membership they represent.

Anyone interested in serving is invited to submit a letter of interest by August 16th to the Grand Junction Area Chamber of Commerce, 360 Grand Avenue, Grand Junction, CO 81501. Letters should outline previous Chamber involvement and how the member is uniquely qualified to fulfill the requirements of a Chamber Board member.

Be a 500 Plan Volunteer - Give One Hour Per Week To A Student! The Mesa County Business Education Foundation and School District 51 are reintroducing a program aimed at K-12 education in an effort to increase our economic competitiveness and better prepare our future workforce. Last year we had over 180 people involved in the 500 Plan. We’d like to get closer to our goal of 500 volunteers as we start a new school year this month. All we ask is that volunteers make an eight week commitment to spend time with an elementary student working on reading skills on Wednesday afternoons at a designated school.

Volunteers will need to:Submit to a background test and •fingerprinting to assure student safetyAttend a two hour class on working with •students to be scheduled several times over the next few weeksCommit to at least an eight week session •beginning on October 20th

Chamber members will be critical to the effort. Employers are being asked to:

Allow employees to be vacant from work for •one hour on Wednesday afternoonsEncourage participation among all employees•Sign up themselves for the program•Make a contribution to the Mesa County •Business Education Foundation equivalent to $50 per employee to help cover the 500 Plan’s cost, including background checks (This is not required but donations will be needed to offset costs of about $25,000)

Members can choose to do all of the above or selected elements. To sign up for the program visit the Chamber website at www.gjchamber.org/500plan.asp. The community, working in tandem, can add 500 hours of instruction a week to our children with this program. You can make a difference!

Why Does The Chamber Get Involved Politically? Some of our members question our involvement in business issues at the local, state and federal level. They feel it is inappropriate for the Chamber to speak out on proposed legislation and regulations. However, information recently released by the U.S. Chamber drives home why it is so important for this Chamber and others to be active advocates for local business. Did you know:

Businesses with fewer than 20 employees •incur regulatory costs 42% higher than larger businesses with up to 500 employees. Almost all businesses in Mesa County are small businessesThe average regulatory cost for each •employee of a small business exceeds $10,000 per year. For our average Chamber member with five employees that is $50,000 per year.A study by the U.S. Chamber of regulatory •burdens in all fifty states recently ranked Colorado as “fair”. The same study estimates that 843 new businesses could be started and over 12,000 jobs created if Colorado would simply streamline regulations.

There are real costs to businesses, employees and the economy of government oversight. It is important that we be at the table to insure that costs don’t outweight benefits of such oversight.

Jump Start Your Kids - No Jumper Cables Required The Mesa County Business Education Foundation is launching a new initiative in August to get students in the mood for going back to school. It is no easy task but by “jump starting” the process it is hoped that students will return to the classrooms refreshed and ready. For high school students the Foundation is offering a FREE speed reading course on Wednesday, August 10th, 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Colorado Mesa University Ballroom. This class which commercially can cost participants over $200 is being offered to any high school student with at least a ninth grade reading level. Sign up through the Chamber by calling 970.242.3214 or emailing [email protected]. Elementary students will

have a morning of fun in the sun while exploring all the places they can learn “cool stuff” outside of the classroom on Wednesday,

August 16th from 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM at Lincoln Park. Numerous local organizations including the John McConnell Math and Science Center, Museum of Western Colorado will be doing hands on activities aimed at engaging their brain power (but we won’t tell them that). For more information, contact Betsy Bair at [email protected] or 970.263.2917).
