About the AAGEThe Australian Association of Graduate Employers (AAGE) is the peak industry bodyrepresenting organisations that recruit and develop Australian graduates. Our currentmembership list comprisesover180organisations, includinga varietyof largeand smallemployersacrossawiderangeofindustriesinboththeprivateandpublicsectors.
TheAAGE is a not-for-profit body that has been in existence since 1988. It does notreceivegovernmentfunding;ratheritsactivitiesareentirelysupportedbymembers,bywayofsubscriptions,eventsandservicesprovidedtothegraduaterecruitmentindustry.

About the SurveyThe AAGE Employer Survey 2008 is based on research conducted for theAAGE by High FliersResearch with 180 graduate employers during August and September 2007. The survey isproducedtoprovideAAGEemployerswiththeverylatestinformationon:
Vacancy levels for graduates commencing work in 2008
Salary levels for new graduates starting work in 2008
Application levels and selection processes used by recruiters in 2007
Marketing spend for events and activities in 2007
Graduate VacanciesThesurveyshowsthatthenumberofgraduatevacanciesonofferfromemployersisrising:
Graduatevacanciesincreasedby11.2percentfor2008,comparedtothenumberofvacanciesonofferin2007.
Vacancylevelshaveincreasedin13outof18industrygroupsandareunchangedintwoothers.
Sixtypercentoforganisationshadnotfilledalltheir2008vacanciesbythetimethesurveytookplace.
Graduate SalariesThesurveyshowsthatstartingsalariesareincreasingathealthylevels:
Graduatestartingsalarieshaveincreasedbyfivepercentin2008,whencomparedtotheratespaidbyemployersin2007.Themedianstartingsalaryfor2008is$48,000.
Thehigheststartingsalariesin2008areforrolesininvestmentbanking,legalworkandchemicalengineering.
Nearlyhalfofallsurveyparticipantsplantoincreasetheir2009startingsalariesbymorethana‘costofliving’raise.
Graduate Recruitment MarketingEmployers’spendongraduatemarketingactivitieshasbeenprofiledfor2007:
Employersspentamedianof$6,000ontheirownrecruitmentliteratureandafurther$5,000ontheirgraduatewebsite.
Organisationsspentamedianof$4,500ononlinepromotionsin2007.Recruitmentadvertisingindirectories,newspapersandjournalshadamedianspendof$13,000.
Themedianspendoncareersfairswas$5,000withanextra$7,500beingspentbyemployersontheirowncampusevents.

Recruitment and SelectionRecruiters’selectiontechniqueswerereviewedalongsidebudgetsrequiredforstaffing,applicationprocessesandrecruitmentoverheads:
Overthree-fifthsoforganisationsactivelypromotetheirvacanciestowomen,withhalfactivelytargetingindigenousstudents.
Themediannumberoffull-timeequivalentstaffworkingingraduaterecruitmentis1.85.
Behaviouralbasedinterviewsareusedby93percentofsurveyparticipants.
Themediancostperjoinerin2007was$6,700.
Graduate Programs and RetentionGraduateprogramswereexamined,alongwith retention rates. Themediansalary for recenthireswasalsocollected:
Twothirdsofemployersoperategraduateprogramsthatlasteithertwoorthreeyears.
Overhalfofsurveyparticipantsonlyhaveonestartdateperyear.
Aquarteroforganisationsprovidemorethan25daystraininginthefirstyear.
Two-fifthsofemployershaveretainedover90percentofgraduateswhostartedwiththemin2006.

Introduction
ResearchingtheGraduateMarketWelcometoThe AAGE Employer Survey 2008,thedefinitivestudyofgraduateemployersandtheirgraduaterecruitmentactivities. ThesurveyisthemainsourceofinformationaboutgraduatesalariesandvacancylevelsinAustraliaandNewZealand.Itprovidesup-to-the-minute in-sights into the latestgraduatemarketconditions,alongwithbenchmarkingofrecruitmentpractices.
Thisreportexaminesthevacanciesandsalariesonoffer,aswellasthe selection and assessment processes used by recruiters. It alsoexplores the number of graduates retained by employers, and thegraduate recruitment marketing used by each organisation. TheSurveyiscarriedoutonbehalfoftheAAGEbythespecialiststudentandgraduateresearchcompany,HighFliersResearch.
SurveyMethodologyResearchforThe AAGE Employer Survey 2008tookplaceinAugustandSeptember2007,usinganonlinequestionnaireaccessedviatheAAGE website.The questionnaire contained forty questionsaboutemployers’graduaterecruitmentactivitiesduringthe2007season, focusing on graduate vacancies and salaries, graduaterecruitmentmarketing,graduaterecruitment&selection,graduatedevelopmentandretention,andchallengesinthemarketplace.
Questionswerespecificallydesignedsothatthesurveyresultscanbeanalysedbyemployers’industriesorbusinesssectors,bythelocationoftheirgraduatevacancies,andbythecareerareaorbusinessfunctionintowhichtheirgraduatesarerecruited.
