Survey• a method of gathering quantitative

• gathering information by individual samples so as to learn about the whole thing
Common Sampling Methods
1. Radom Sampling2. Systematic Sampling3. Stratified Sampling4. Convenience Sampling
1. Radom Sampling
• choosing subjects from a population through unpredictable means
• everybody has a chance of being selected
Sample Random Sampling
• mall surveys• political polls• online surveys• restaurant surveys
2. Systematic Sampling• involves selecting items using a constant
interval between selections

stratum: segment of the population who share a common characteristics
• separation may be by gender, ethnicity, age or other common interests
3. Stratified Sampling
4. Convenience Sampling
• sample is selected by convenience
What Sampling Method would best serve your research?
Questionnaire• instrument you distribute to the sample
you will survey
• contains series of questions that elicit information that help you in answering your research questions
Considerations before creating a survey
1. Identify your purpose
2. Go back to your thesis Statement and Research Questions
3. Determine what are you going to do with the data.
4. Determine how are you going to use the date.
Considerations before creating a survey
In putting together a questionnaire,
• provide clear instructions on how to complete the questionnaire
• start with interesting questions
• ask clear questions, use simple words
• ask close ended questions
• ask only one question at a time
• group questions in logical order(make sure that the previous question is linked to the next)
In putting together a questionnaire,
• ask important questions in the first half of the questionnaire
• keep your questions short
• provide a cover letter to accompany your questionnaire
In putting together a questionnaire,
Kinds of Questions to avoid in a Survey
• Biased questions• Questions that assume what they ask• Double-barreled questions• Confusing or wordy questions• Questions that do not relate to what

Cover Letter-persuades the respondent to take
part in the survey
-motivates the respondent to answer the survey
Contents of a Cover Letter for a Survey

• purpose of the study
• catch to the respondent
• actions with the results
• confidentiality policy
Contents of a Cover Letter for a Survey
• person to contact in case the respondent has a question
• close by expressing thanks for their participation
