With that money, Fraser Heights and Panorama Ridge secondary schools will be expanded and two new elementary schools will be built in South Newton and East Clayton. As well, land will be bought for two other elementary schools and two new secondary schools in Clayton and Grandview Heights to offset enrolment growth at Earl Marriot and Lord Tweedsmuir secondary schools. “I would think this is going to get rolling really quickly,” Clark said on Monday afternoon. “There is more to do, there is no question about it,” she noted, but added this is “a pretty good start.” The Surrey school district is B.C.’s largest, and one of the largest nationally, growing by about 1,000 students per year. Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts characterized Clark’s announcement as a “great day” for the city. She noted there are 71,000 children in the district. School board chairwoman Laurae McNally said the board is “thrilled” with this new funding and will move “very, very quickly on these projects,” with architects to be assigned within two weeks. Jagrup Brar, NDP MLA for Surrey- Fleetwood, noted that with 7,300 Surrey students still in portable classrooms, some 6,000 will remain that way even when these projects are completed. He said Surrey school trustees had asked the provincial government “about a month ago” for $273 million to build eight elementary schools and two secondary schools. “This is way shorter than that,” he said of Clark’s announcement. But Clark said more capital funding announcements are to come. In the meantime, she said, “the more school space there is, the fewer portables there are. That’s the goal.” Other B.C. school districts benefiting from the province’s $353-million plan include Central Okanagan, Langley, Richmond, Vancouver and Conseil scolaire francophone. SURREY – What is it like to run against apopular mayor?

Surrey’s mayoral candidates should have athing or two to say about that, following DianneWatts’s fairing quite well in a recent poll.

The phone poll, conducted by ForumResearch Inc. from Oct. 21 to 23, asked peoplein Surrey two questions: if a person overallapproves or disapproves of the job their mayoris doing and if they plan to vote for their currentmayor or someone else in the next municipalelection.

Out of 407 people, 68 per cent said theyapprove of the job Watts is doing and 54 per centsaid they plan to vote for her in the election.

Results based on the total sample areconsidered accurate plus or minus 1.2 per cent,19 times out of 20.

Lorne Bozinoff, president of Forum Research, said Watts must be doing something right, because these results put her in fourth placeamong Canadian mayors in the 15 major cities

polled, in both questions. The most popular mayor in the poll was Hazel

McCallion of Mississauga with 78 per centpeople approving of that mayor’s work.

“She’s 90 years old,” Bozinoff said ofMcCallion. “She’s been mayor for 30 years.”

Mayors Rob Ford of Toronto and Gerald

Tremblay of Montreal took the country’s lowestapproval ratings with 37 per cent and 32 percent respectively.

When it came to Watts, Bozinoff pointedto a “high profile conference” that happenedrecently, in reference to the Surrey RegionalEconomic Summit where former presidentsGeorge W. Bush and Bill Clinton were amongthe speakers.

He said “having people of that calibre in thecity” has probably added to her stature.

“I think some of these mayors have really puttheir cities on the map,” Bozinoff said.

He said McCallion made Mississauga known, making it known as more than just a suburb ofToronto.

“And maybe the same thing with Dianne(Watts) if she is establishing identity forSurrey separate from Vancouver and is verypopular with residents,” Bozinoff said. “Anykind of city-building activity and any kindof city recognition activity, like the (summit)conference, I think is going to boost theirratings,” Bozinoff.

The pollster said Watts is in very good shapefor the next election.

“She’s probably heading for a win right now, barring, I guess, something unexpected betweennow and then.”

The civic election is set for Nov. [email protected]

SURREY – Meet Surrey’s greenest– person, that is.

Deb Jack was honoured with the GreenCity award in the individual category at theinaugural 2011 City Award reception at theCity Centre Library on Oct. 25.

Jack is the president and co-founder ofSurrey Environmental Partners, but wearsmany other green hats: She has workedwith White Rock Surrey Naturalists andparticipates in many forums, such as one onregional biodiversity conservation in MetroVancouver.

She often attends the city’s environmentaladvisory committee meetings.

So what does city’s greenest individualthink about the work Surrey is doing?

“However well we’re doing, we have to dobetter,” she said.

She gave a thumbs up to the city’s Nature

Matters programs, which she said hasexpanded to includemore adult offerings.

Jack acknowledgedthe city has a lot ofparks, but lookingat the bigger picture, she said even moreparkland is needed.

“My position is weneed much more natural areas and this is thetime to get them,” Jack said. “The greater thepopulation, the greater the need is for theseliving green areas.”

Jack said she would like to see the city putaside three large pieces of property for thesole purpose of being parkland – not waterparks or playgrounds, just plain old “livinggreen.”

“We’re doing all sorts of investments inthe new City Centre and the fabulous library. We need to be doing capital investment, additional investment, in these areas of landto be set aside, and this is entirely separateand apart from the parkland acquisition.”

She said Surrey has many variations ofparks: cultivated parks such as Holland Park, and Bear Creek Park – chunks of which

are cultivated while other chunks of it areuncultivated.

“And those serve their purpose,” she said, but added that unfragmented units areessential.

Jack said she doesn’t want to see the cityexpand 84th Avenue from 140th Street toKing George Boulevard, going through BearCreek Park, a project she said was stoppedbut isn’t removed from the books.

She pointed to Green Timbers Park, whichshe said is terrific, but is broken up by roads.

“How on earth does a snake go from oneside to the other?”

Jack said preservation on a city level isimportant because cities can’t depend onprovincial and federal parks alone.

“People depend on what they have locally,”she said.

She pointed out the plethora of benefits ofhaving natural green, including temperaturemitigation, pollination, cleaner air, not tomention the several studies Jack referred tothat show human beings are happiest andmost efficient when they have easy access to“living green.”

“It’s for our grandchildren’s grandchildren.“We can’t take it all for granted,” Jack said.

SURREY – Surrey teachers haveendorsed the Surrey Civic Coalition slate ofcandidates for school board.

Surrey Teachers’ Association presidentDenise Moffatt said Friday the unionbelieves the SCC candidates would be thestrongest advocates for public education.

“We also believe that the candidates bestreflect the diversity and multiculturalism inthe community,” Moffatt said.

Moffatt said the current board iscomprised “predominantly of English-speaking Caucasian candidates” and the STAwould like to see the makeup of the boardbetter reflect the city’s ethnicity.

The SCC team includes Ram Sidhu, MohChelali, Sukhy Dhillon, Charlene Dobie,Laurence Greeff and incumbent trustee IjazChatta.

Earlier this year, SCC members and

incumbent trusteesTerry Allen andLaurie Larsen quitthe party and joinedthe newly-formedcentrist Surrey FirstEducation slate.

Currently, only incumbenttrustee Ijaz Chattaclaims official leftycredentials.

Moffatt said the current board ofeducation has failed to secure adequatecapital funding from the Ministry ofEducation to build new schools and easechronic overcrowding.

She also said trustees should conduct lessbusiness behind closed doors and more of itat public meetings.

Moffatt believes the STA’s endorsementwill sway voters.

“We think our endorsement makes adifference – teachers are a respected voice inthe community.”

Hydro’s cashhocus-pocusis outlandish

In terms of sheermagnitude, the monkeybusiness going on with

BC Hydro’s accountingpractices may rank as themost misleading financialdodge ever performed by aB.C. government.

The province’sindependent financialwatchdog – Auditor GeneralJohn Doyle – recently blewthe whistle on the deferredaccounts being piled up bythe Crown corporation. Now, “deferred accounting”seems like a benign and dulltopic, but the ramificationsof this ongoing practiceare potentially huge forratepayers in the foreseeablefuture.

Not only that, but thiskind of financial hocus-pocus has allowed the B.C.Liberal government to maskthe true state of its financialposition.

And we’re not talkingchump change here. Alltold, BC Hydro has funneled$2.2 billion of expenses intothose deferred accounts, andthe total is expected to hit$5 billion by 2017.

In the 10 years the B.C.Liberals have been in power, the deferred accounts haveballooned from just over$200 million to more than$2 billion. Meanwhile, inthat same timeframe, thegovernment has taken morethan $2 billion in dividendsfrom BC Hydro.

In other words, thegovernment has artificiallyimproved its bottom line bybillions of dollars. In thisfiscal year alone, the deficitwould climb by almost$450 million if the deferredaccount for the year waseliminated at BC Hydro.

The government hasgiven the impression thatBC Hydro’s profitabilityhas allowed it to be paid ahefty dividend every yearwhen the reality is that thedividend was made possibleonly because a huge amountof expenses were simplydeferred for payment at alater date.

The motive for thisexpensive sleight-of-hand appears to be thatit prevents BC Hydrorates from increasing tooquickly, which can bepolitically damaging for thegovernment.

But the deferred costsstill have to be paid back atsome point, which meanseventually hydro rates will

have to increase significantly(on top of the increases thatwill come with or withoutdeferred accounting).

Energy Minister RichColeman says he’s confidentthe corporation will be ableto pay down the accountsonce big projects like theSite C dam are completedand more revenue isgenerated. We’ll see.

This kind of jiggery-pokery makes some ofthe financial hijinks thatoccurred during theNDP’s time in power palein comparison. The NewDemocrats were routinelyaccused of off-loadingspending costs into areasnot captured by theprovincial budget, butthe money involved theredoesn’t come anywhere nearthe $5 billion this particularscheme will eventually cost.

In fact, if the NDP hadtried something like thiswhile in government, theB.C. Liberals would havebeen apoplectic with rage. While in Opposition, the

B.C. Liberals constantlytried to portray NewDemocrats as economicincompetents and wrappedthemselves in claims oftremendous superiority onany economic issue. Butthe longer the B.C. Liberalshave been in power, themore the lie is put to thoseclaims. The B.C. Liberals’track record is actually quitespotty on this front.

For example, there havebeen numerous and hugebudget deficits posted bythe B.C. Liberals, while thegovernment’s incompetencedestroyed a tax policy shift– the HST – it insistedwas vitally needed by theprovince.

And the province’s totaldebt is approaching $60billion, almost doublethe amount when theB.C. Liberals first cameto power. Throw in theBoss Power fiasco, whichsaw $30 million paid to acompany for not developinga uranium mine, and itall adds up to quite the

opposite of a thrifty andtransparent government.

LEFT CAUSES TROUBLEFOR LEFT AT VOTE TIME

Another political ironymay be taking shape inthe Vancouver municipalelections. The OccupyVancouver crowd, whichappears to support a hodge-podge of assorted left-wingpolicies, has become an issuein the election in that city.

As managers of the city,Vancouver Mayor GregorRobertson and his VisionVancouver council arefinding themselves in a tightspot. Mayoralty candidateSuzanne Anton and the NPAhave effectively, if unfairly,

aligned the Occupy gangwith Robertson and Visionin the minds of many.

If public frustration andannoyance with the Occupycrowd grows – or if it turnsinto a nasty riot if the policemove to forcibly end theprotest – they may wearmuch of the fallout.

While Robertson himselfseems to be a safe bet forre-election, it will be ironicindeed if a left-wing protestends up costing even acouple of left-leaning Visioncandidates victory at theballot box.

The Editor,Re: “Teachers won’t fill them in, so report

cards will be blank,” the Now, Oct. 27.Contrary to popular belief, I write report

cards at home in the wee hours – not atschool.

When at work, I am teaching studentsseven or more subjects, marking work, assessing students, simultaneouslyprepping for the upcoming day/week/month, organizing school-wide events, planning field trips, booking guest speakers, answering questions, meeting parents, handing out Band-Aids, returning phonecalls, helping colleagues, talking to kids, implementing daily PE (apparently it is myresponsibility to keep students fit), planningHalloween activities, searching in vain forpaper and art supplies that do not exist, learning about computer programs so Ican teach the students at all learning levels, attending meetings, referring students toLST, counselling, doctors, etc. and teachingmyself French.

That pretty much covers my eight-hourwork day. Then, when I get home and mytwo- and five-year-old are in bed at around8 p.m. (if I am lucky), I start working on

my report cards. I invite anyone who isinterested to come and hang out with meand my Grade 5 class for a day. Seriously, mydoor is wide open.

Then you can decide for yourself whetheror not I work hard enough.

Job action is difficult and never black andwhite no matter what side you are on, butI’m keeping my 15 per cent. I’ve earned it.

Newton pay parkinghas got to go, WattsThe Editor,

Re: “Pay parking issue is choking outbusiness,” the Now letters, Oct. 25.

I agree with Gobind Singh 100 per cent– and even though I work in the heart ofNewton, I no longer purchase sushi, donairsor health-food products from merchants on137th Street. It is just too much of a hassle.

Once again, the interests of big businesssupersedes mom-and-pop enterprises.

I would like to know what the return is

from the parking meters as opposed to thecost of installation.

Though I am an avid supporter of DianneWatts and her forward thinking, I believethis was a big mistake.

Admit it and get rid of the pay parking.

Flo McCafferty, Surrey

Celebration of Lightsshould be a lot quieterThe Editor,

Re: “What is Diwali and how is itcelebrated?” the Now, Oct. 25.

I am under the understanding that thiscelebration is a celebration of lights.

The article explains how and why it iscelebrated. Not always on the same day eachyear, depending on Hindu calendar.

My question is – why fireworks andfirecrackers?

I see candles were shown in the picture. Ican understand putting up lights, the sameas Christmas decorations.

But fireworks and firecrackers going off

days before and days after Diwali?People who have to go to work the

next day, are woken up at 1 a.m. or 2 a.m.,thinking a gun went off – and then can’t goto sleep.

Is Diwali celebrated like that in India? Orhas this started here in Canada, because ofthe use of fireworks for Halloween?

My husband and I were trying to havea nice intimate dinner, celebrating his 76thbirthday, while listening to all the noisefrom fireworks and firecrackers well into thenight.

Last year, some of the fireworks were setoff across the street from our house butwent flying onto our roof. We were scared todeath the roof would catch on fire.

One landed on our lawn – I thought abomb went off. It burned a hole in the grass.

What happened to respect for yourneighbours? I do not have to go to work, butI feel sorry for those who do.

Have your celebration of light – but canyou not do it with just lights?

Does it have to be with firecrackers andfireworks for several days?

Anne Kehler, Surrey

As a teacher, I’ve earned my 15 per cent, thanks.

SURREY — A crowd of about 200 helpedSurrey Memorial Hospital Foundationlaunch its latest campaign Thursdayevening at Simon Fraser University Surrey,a campaign set to coincide with theconstruction of an eight-storey Critical CareTower, the centerpiece of a $512-millionexpansion and redevelopment of the hospital.

The Building Foundations Campaignaims to raise $10 million toward the project, which is the single largest capital investmentin health care ever made by the provincialgovernment.

The Critical Care Tower beganconstruction earlier this year.

Highlights of the 430,000-square-foottower include a pediatric emergency centre,UBC administrative teaching space, roomand library, 25-bed intensive care unit, 36-bed medical unit, 36-bed neurology unitand a rooftop helipad.

A new emergency centre will open in2013, while the rest of the tower will beready in 2014.

B.C. Health Minister Michael de Jongattended the campaign launch and said theSMH expansion, coupled with the recentlyopened Jim Pattison Outpatient Careand Surgery Centre, total close to three-quarters of a billion dollars in health-careinfrastructure in Surrey.

“As you embark on this campaign I wantyou to know that you have already madehistory,” de Jong told the crowd.

“The building is the skeleton, and it willbe an impressive skeleton, but the people arethe soul. The people will be the heart,” deJong said.

Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts told theaudience that 800 to 1,000 people move intothe city every month.

“This investment that is going on here, the $512-million investment, is reallyneeded within Surrey to meet the needs ofour population,” Watts said.

At the launch reception, EllisDon, thebuilding company working on the tower, announced it would help raise $1 millionfrom the construction industry.

Vice-president and B.C. area managerof EllisDon, David MacFarlane, said thehospital is very important to his family.

MacFarlane presented Watts and de Jong

with golf clubs, as he said the company willbe raising the $1 million through a series ofgolf tournaments and other initiatives.

“The new tower will give the hospital apresence on King George (Boulevard) andbe a cornerstone to the downtown core. We’re pretty excited about being a part ofthat,” he said.

MacFarlane said the team has alreadypoured 8,000 cubic metres of concrete andthere are 27,000 more cubic metres to bepoured.

The campaign’s promotional video, narrated by former CKNW journalistGeorge Garrett, was screened at the launch.

“Surrey is already British Columbia’s secondlargest city, with more children than anywhereelse in the province,” the video reported.“Fora city this size, it’s only fitting that its residentswould be served by the largest health-carecentre in the Fraser Health Authority.”

Jane Adams, SMH Foundation presidentand CEO, said Surrey has a long and richtradition of supporting the hospital.

“This is such a significant expansionof Surrey Memorial that it will no doubtinspire our donors to help make sure we canopen the Critical Care Tower with the verybest equipment,” she said.

If one-quarter ofhouseholds in MetroVancouver carve aHalloween pumpkin thisyear, that’s about 200,000Jack ‘O Lanterns.

That means we greetNovember with 1,000metric tonnes of shrivelledand sad-looking gourds.

Pumpkins tossed in thetrash will end up rottingin the dump. There, they’llgenerate methane, apowerful greenhouse gasthat causes global warming.

Instead, chop yourpumpkin up and put it inyour backyard composteror your kitchen or balconyworm composter. The

worms will get to work, providing nutrient-richcompost that you can use togrow next year’s pumpkin.

Or, dig a shallow trenchin your vegetable orflower garden and drop inshredded pumpkin chunks.Fill in the trench knowingthat the nutrients willnourish the ground andact as an excellent, naturalfertilizer.

For tips on how tocompost, visit yourmunicipal website or theregional district’s website,www.metrovancouver.org. Check out the “FoodRecycling/Composting”pages.

The shorthanded Surrey Eagles couldn’tget comfortable last weekend, winning onthe road but losing at home for a split of B.C.Hockey League games.

Surrey travelled to Coquitlam Friday wherethey edged the host Express 4-3 in overtime. The Birds were back at South Surrey Arenaon Sunday but found the pre-Hallowe’enenvirnment to be unsettling and lost 6-3 tothe Nanaimo Clippers.

“We got a split out of one road game andone home game, but what bothers us mostis the loss,” said Eagles coach Matt Erhart.“We don’t like to lose at home in front ofour fans so that’s disappointing, but at thesame time, we did play a pretty good roadgame in Coquitlam. It’s still early in the yearand teams are still sorting themselves out atthis point. We’re in good shape and whileit’s by very minute percentage points, we

still have the best winning percentage in ourconference.”

The BCHL introduced a number ofchanges over the summer and one of themlimited each team’s roster to 21 players, downfrom 23 in previous years. That move createdproblems for the Eagles last weekend withthree players hurt and two more - forwardsBrandon Morley and Michael Stenerson- attending the Canada West team camppreparing for the upcoming World Junior AChallenge tourney to be held later this monthin Langley.

The Canada West coaches plan scrimmagesover the next couple of days beforeannouncing the final roster later in the week.

Erhart said the opportunity facing Morleyand Stenerson is exciting and reflects well onthe players as well as the Surrey program.

“There’s only 34 players in this camp fromall across Western Canada so to have twoplayers there is a good testament to both ofthose players as well as our team,” Erhart said.

“I don’t think Surrey has ever sent anybodyto the Canada West team in the past and tohave two guys among the final 34 says a lotabout the progress of our program and putsour name out there among the scouts whoare watching the tournament. Hopefully bothof our guys make it and while it will be toughplaying five or six games without them, theexperience they get there will be huge and itwill help us down the road this season.”

Erhart added the player shortage created anumber of problems, but the coaches learneda lot about the Eagles who were on the ice lastweekend.

“We had five guys out of the lineup and wehoped some of the other guys would step upwith increased responsibilities and ice time,”he said.“Some kids took advantage of thatand others didn’t. It’s still early in the seasonthough and as coaches, it’s good to see whocan play with more responsibility and whocan’t. We got to see things, both good andbad, from everyone who played and when

everyone gets back, it’ll be easier to determineroles for every player based on what they’recapable of.”

Sunday afternoon at South Surrey Arenakids wearing Hallowe’en costumes receivedfree admission but the scary part of the eventwas on the ice. Surrey fell behind 3-0 inthe opening frame before rallying with twounanswered goals from captain Tyler Morleyin the middle frame. The Surrey comebackcame up short as Nanaimo struck for threemore goals in the third to wrap up the roadwin.

Charles Orzetti scored the other Surreymarker.

The Eagles began the weekend inCoquitlam Friday where Tyler Morley baggeda hat-trick including the game winner inovertime to lead Surrey to the win. DevonToews also scored for the Eagles.

The Eagles are back on the ice Wednesdaynight when they travel to Chilliwack to takeon the Chiefs.

VMSL teams dominate Pacific CupMen’s soccer

A 24

The semifinal round of the PacificCup tourney has a distinct Surrey-North Delta flavour with three localmen’s premier teams advancing withquarter-final wins last weekend.

The Pacific Cup features the toppremier teams from the VancouverMetro Soccer League, the Fraser ValleySoccer League and the VancouverIsland Soccer League competing in atournament over the fall months.

Defending provincial champion ICSTPegasus (VMSL) of Newton had littletrouble disposing of Victoria’s GordonHead (VISL) 6-0 Saturday while acrosstown in Cloverdale, the Surrey UnitedFirefighters (VMSL) outlasted PortMoody (FVSL) 5-3. Not to be leftout of the party, North Delta’s DeltaHurricanes (VMSL) secured a berthin the final four by edging Surrey F.C.Athletic Club (FVSL) 2-1.

In Newton, six different players foundthe back of the net as Pegasus rolledover a depleted Gordon Head team.Omari Aldridge, Niko Marcina, DeepToor, Meysam Soltani, Sahil Sandhu

and Javid Khan provided the goals forthe Horsemen.

“It was definitely an emphatic win forus,” said Pegasus coach Rob Reed.“Thedown side is I don’t think Gordon Headcame over with their complete team— it looked like they were missing afew guys and they had no subs. It wasn’tthe most difficult of games for us, butfull credit to them for showing up andplaying the game.”

Meanwhile in Cloverdale, SurreyUnited needed almost all five of theirgoals to hold off a determined PortMoody side. Surrey led 2-0 in the firsthalf and 4-2 in the second half only tohave Port Moody rally to stay close.

Playing coach Niall Thompsonscored three goals for Surrey while solomarkers came from Steve Kindel andAndrew Proctor.

“We were all over them and the scoreline makes the game look a lot closerthan it was,” Thompson said.“Ourmistakes kept them in the game becausewe missed on so many chances that wecreated. I scored three goals and to behonest, I should have had five. Therewere times when the game was close butwith all the chances we were creating,

we were never really worried. They putpressure on us but we deserved thewin.”

The Delta Hurricanes punched theirticket to the semifinals by doubling upon the visiting Surrey F.C. Athletic Club.

Rupi Birring and Daniel Badeshaeach scored once for the Hurricanes.

Richmond Hibernians are the fourthsemifinalist, giving the VMSL a sweepof the final four. Surrey will play Deltain one semifinal on the weekend ofNov. 13 while Pegasus will travel toRichmond.

“It’s funny how it has shaken downbut the semifinals should be reallyfamiliar with four VMSL teams playingeach other,” Reed said.“I guess that’sa real feather in the cap for our leagueand it shows that our teams are part ofwhat is definitely the strongest league inB.C. Having said that, it’s still not likethe Provincial Cup; it’s missing some ofthe intensity and sense of importancethat comes with every game of theprovincials. Still, the intensity shouldpick up noticeably now that we’re downto the semifinals. There’s a cup andthere’s (prize) money on the line nowand that will make things interesting.”

A24 TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2011 THE NEWSPAPER.COM

Phil Reimer’s

Golf reportAdam Hadwin will

not be playing on theCanadian Tour next year.

This is good news.Adam, thanks to some

top-notch work by hisagent, has moved up atQualifying School and hewill now play in roundthree — the final round.

The top 25 get that “ohboy” moment when they are handed their PGATour cards. The rest get either a full-time ride onthe Nationwide Tour or a conditional card.

Regardless, it means Adam is moving on up ina big way.

I talked with a few low handicappers whothought the Nationwide Tour would be best forhim — build up experience, etc. Then there arethose who believe that you might as well get theexperience playing against the very best and thatis on the PGA Tour. Keep in mind that he has hadseveral tournaments with the “big boys,” so it’snot like he is going to be in the embryo stage ofthe learning curve. Regardless, it’s the best newshe could have hoped for.

Going through the stages, whether it’s one ortwo, is nerve wracking at best. For Adam it’s justone more step upward in an amazing 12 months.

Hopefully he will have some fellow Canucks tokeep him company in the final stage.

No fewer than 21 Canadians are heading tostage two. I believe 14 has been the record upuntil now. We noted some of those players lastweek and here are the rest. From B.C.: JamesAllenby of Langley, Brynn Parry of NorthVancouver and Mitch Gilles of Williams Lakeare added to the Canadian list. That now meansfour of the 21 that are moving on are from thisprovince.

Also moving forward are Richard Scott, BradFritsch, Dustin Risdon, Will Mitchell, James Love,Lindsay Wilson, Peter Laws and Mitch Evanecz.

*********************************************Now this guy I am happy to see back. For three years Sergio Garcia has been out of

sight and out of mind. Now all of a sudden heis back. Sergio won by 11 strokes last weekend.Playing again on the European Tour and at one ofthe best golf courses in the world — Valderramain Spain – he won again, fighting off veteranMiguel Angel Jimenez.

Not since his march to the top with an eight-stroke win at the U.S. Open at Congressional hasRory McIlroy been able to hoist another trophy– until this past weekend. Rory won the ShanghaiMasters in an extra hole playoff against AnthonyKim. The tournament is not sanctioned, but firstprize is $2 million, the largest first-prize chequein golf.

Here is good news for all golfers, but especiallythe pros. One of the dumbest rules in golf is onits way out. No longer will a golfer be penalized ifhis ball moves after he addresses it. All it took wasa gust of wind while you were over the ball in thepast and you were penalized. Not anymore.

More on another rule next week that shouldhelp fellow weekend golfers.

Fun By The NumbersLike puzzles?

Then you'll love Sudoku. This mind-bending puzzlewill have you hookedfrom the moment yousquare off, so sharpenyour pencil and putyour Sudoku savvy

to the test!

Here's How It Works:Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill eachrow, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numberswill appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

THE TRUCK EXPERT

It is said that, in 1941 the Ford motor company produced anexperimental automobile with a plastic body composed of

70% cellulose fibres from hemp. The car body could absorbblows 10 times as great as steel without denting. The carwas designed to run on hemp fuel. Because of the ban onboth hemp and alcohol, the car was never mass produced.
