overseas. His military career appears confused. He joined the Middlesex Regiment in November
1914 but seems to have joined the Kings Royal Rifle Corps in November 1915. He was struck off
the roll as a deserter on 28/12/15 by the KRRC and a witness stated that he left the camp with
his kitbag. Records seem to show that he was arranging a transfer to 18th Middlesex where his
father was serving. In the Middlesex Regiment he progressed to Sergeant in April 1916. Sent to
France 6/6/16. He was reduced to Private after a court martial 25/3/17 for going absent. Was
posted to 1st Battalion 8/2/18 when he became a lance corporal. May have been awarded the
Military Medal. Appears to have been born in Stoke. Married to Beatrice Leeks (sister of the Leek
brothers) in 1915 and lived at Plough House Rayleigh. Father Mr J and mother Julia, of 9
Mason Street Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent. Inscription on headstone "How we loved him"

Drowned at sea. Depending on record either on troopship "Aragon" which was torpedoed outside
of Alexandria or possibly troopship "Osmanieh" which struck a mine the same day . Enlisted
7/12/15. Mobilised 20/9/17. Embarked overseas 17/12/17. At time of enlistment was a tomato
grower but when mobilised was a railway worker at Shoebury; fireman or driver which was
probably why he took so long to be called and in fact he asked to be released to serve. Married
1911 to Annie Taylor with 2 children at Dorothy Cottages Seaview Road Great Wakering. Annie
remarried 1919 as Edwards. Son of James & Alice of High Street. Brother to David.

Killed in Action at Delville Wood, Somme. Enlisted November 1914 into 9th Lancers (Number
4388). To France 1/9/15. Underage at enlistment adopting father's forenames. Likely to be
Charles Marcus Zillwood. Born Deptford, lived in Sunnyside, Grove Road Rayleigh. Was a
member of Congregational Church. Remembered on Rayleigh Memorial. Also remembered on
grave of Mabel Wimpenny in Rayleigh Cemetery who also died in the war, drowned trying to
rescue daughter on holiday
