KINDERGARTEN

April is here! It is the time of the year when the hard work we’ve all put towards learning the many skills of reading and writing magically come together. We are reading more, writ-ing more, problem solving, and enjoying everything about school. Our themes for April are insects, ladybugs, butterflies, rabbits, and the farm. Near the end of the month, each class will take a trip to Publix.

We appreciate all the help and support that our parents have offered and contributed so far this year. We look forward to a fun and exciting April.

1ST GRADE Happy Spring! Students are in “full bloom” as we head into the last grading period! We are looking forward to some fun events this month.

First, Kim Smith with the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization will present a Bicycle Safety Program. Then, Mimi from Mimi’s Crafts will come to our classrooms to do a special project with our students. First graders will learn a little bit about her shop and participate in a hands-on art lesson.

In math, we will be learning about the world of geometry as we explore 2- dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes. We also keep working on those math facts! In reading, students will partake in a unit centered around the story The Dot which explores a young child’s “failure” in art class. Students will learn more about the “Growth Mindset” and the im-portance of seeing challenges and mistakes as a way to grow our brains!

As the end of the year draws nearer, don’t make those summer plans just yet! Students will have quite a few challenging academic assessments to complete. Keep up with the nightly reading. Remember to check papers daily and have your child fix errors. Encourage neat handwriting! Your additional guidance really does make a difference!

Want to get involved? Consider signing up to help with the Backyard Barbecue on April 27th! It is a Surfside tradition and loads of fun! First graders will be performing on the black top that morning. Hope to see you all there! Below are our Award Winners for the third grading period:

Green Team Update

Great news – our school won the ECO school award from the city of Melbourne and was featured in the Hometown News. ECO school awards are given for outstanding environmental practices such as use of rain barrels, recycling and school gardens.

Our two biggest events of the year are this month, Rent a Chick and the Backyard BBQ/Plant and Chick sale. We will have lots of wonderful plants for sale, as well as friendly, adorable chicks. The proceeds from these events help to fund our school gardening and incubation projects.

Please contact Mrs. Erika if you would like information! Have a groovy, green spring.

Erika Maier Surfside Teacher, Gifted Student Program Fantastic Farm 4-H Leader

Thank you all for sending your healthy kids to school for FSA testing that began this week! We had perfect at-tendance in 3rd and 4th grades. That’s impressive! Our kids no doubt put forth their best effort and we appreciate you parents helping them with the home routines that set them up for success those mornings. We will resume testing in early May. Our staff was flexible with teamwork as schedules needed to be adjusted slightly. Our chil-dren were troopers and had positive attitudes through it all. We are so blessed here with our students and fami-lies!

I enjoyed watching the teams in action for the Mother/Son Scavenger Hunt and seeing how much fun everyone had at this event. A huge thank you goes out to all those that worked behind the scenes with preparing the map, the activities, and the organization from our community to all pull together for such a special and memorable event.

We look forward to seeing your annual input and comments with the opportunity before you to let us know how we are doing on the parent survey that is available for all of you online. Thank you for taking a few moments to share the things that you love and provide ideas or suggestions to make us even better. We value our responses.

I can’t believe it’s April already and we’ve begun the last grading period of the school year! Let’s make it the best one yet!

Lisa Larkin Assistant Principal

2nd Grade

2nd grade will be celebrating the Spring time with incubating in our classrooms! We look forward to learning about the new animal additions to our school!

We will be taking our Field Trip to Gatorland on Thursday, April 18th. Please be aware that the Field Trip form needs to be notarized before returning to your child’s teacher. You may volunteer if you have A+ status prior to the trip.

Please contact your child’s teacher for the steps needed to ensure you are able to chaperone.

Registration packets for the 2019-2020 school year were sent home in your child’s folder in the end of March. Please fill out the forms completely and attached two forms of identification that were noted on the form to prove proof of

residency. If your child is not returning, please check the box on the front and return the form. Thank you in advance.

With the end of the year approaching, keep in mind communication is key. Each class will have information being sent home regarding end of the year procedures and events during the month of May. Please check your child’s

folder/ planner nightly for any news sent home.

We look forward to a wonderful 4th nine weeks!

3rd GRADE

Surfside’s 3rd Graders rocked the Reading FSA!!! We are so proud of them for doing their best work! Now it’s full steam ahead with math! We will be continuing to work with fractions and will also be working on geom-etry, data, and measurement. The math FSA will be May 7th and 8th. We are looking forward to our Sea World trip on May 22nd. Payment and all permission forms will be due April 24th. Read, read, read! Remem-ber, more reading makes better readers!

4TH GRADE

In April fourth grade will continue learning about rocks and minerals. We will also study Florida’s involvement the Seminole Wars. Our next novel study will be Maniac Magee, by Jerry Spinelli. Students will discover the myth of Maniac Magee, as he changes the lives of a racially divided small town with his amazing and legendary feats. We will also take a journey back in time as we travel on our annual trip to St. Augustine.

6th Grade

As we enter the last grading period, students have just finished the Writing portion of the FSA. Reading and Math testing is scheduled for the first two weeks in May. Please check with your child about paperwork that has been sent home recently. Important registration information, permission slips, yearbook order forms, and end-of-the-year activities are some of the things you should have gotten recently. Additionally, if you have not begun using FOCUS yet, please check into getting your PIN so you can log in and see your child’s grades and other useful school information.

Students should still be reading at home for 15 minutes and working on their math assignments in Khan Academy on a daily basis- please encourage your child to do so!

Music

There is a new digital smooth and easy Chorus sign up procedure for those students who will be in grades 4-6 in the 2019-20 school year.

We listened to everyone’s feedback and have made changes to our chorus sign up procedure. For everyone’s con-venience next year it will be done all on-line. A sign-up link will go live on August 9th at 9:00 a.m. The link will ap-pear on the Surfside home page. The process should be quick and easy taking about 3 minutes to complete. There is a maximum of 100 students in the group. Once that has been filled there will be a link to a wait list. If during the year a slot opens up, then the first person on the waiting list will be invited to join the group. Students that have been in chorus for two years and are going into sixth grade will be given the opportunity in May to sign up in advance. We are calling it the Surfside “fast pass”. In May an email will be sent out to those stu-dents that meet that criteria and they will have a designated period of time to sign up.

Beginning Orchestra is offered to students who will be in 5th grade for the 2019-20 school year. We are beginning the sign-up process. Students have tried out all of the instruments and selected the one they would like to play. Sign up packets were sent home with students on April 4th. We are also in the process of signing students up for 2019-20 6th grade Intermediate Orchestra. Backyard BBQ: April 27th 11:00 a.m. K-3 students will perform and then Chorus

The ESE team wants to wish you a happy spring! We are so proud of how hard our stu-dents here at Surfside have worked with the first round of FSA. We are looking to finishing the year strong, throughout the last nine weeks. As always, please encourage your child to read out loud to an adult for at least 20 minutes per night, and the more the better!

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR ALL 6TH GRADE PARENTS

Florida State Law requires that all students receive a Tdap immunization booster BEFORE entering into 7th grade. Don’t Delay! Students without this immunization will be turned away at Middle School Registration.
