Definition

• The term “surfactant” applies to a group of

molecules having both a hydrophilic part and

a hydrophobic (or lipophilic) part.• Surfactants modify the interfacial properties

of the liquids in which they are incorporated;

this property stems from their tendency toconcentrate at the interfaces separating

immiscible phases.

JENIS-JENIS/PENGGOLONGAN SURFAKTAN

1. Surfaktan anionik

2. Surfaktan kationik

3. Surfaktan amfoterik4. Surfaktan non ionik

Note: Berdasarkan muatan yang dihasilkan jika terhidrolisa dalam air, maka surfaktan dapat

di bagi jadi 4 Golongan

What are Some Common Surfactants Used in

Skin Care Products?

• The most common type of surfactant used in skin is ananionic surfactant.

• These are very strong surfactants that clean grease and

dirt from surfaces. They are also used in hair products.

• Surfactant used in cosmetic products/skin care :sodium lauryl sulfate, disodium lauryl sulfosuccinate,

ammonium laureth sulfate, alpha-olefin sulfonate, sodium laurate (Sl), sodium cocoyl isethionate (SCI),alkyl polyglucoside (APG), sodium laureth sulfate (SleS),and cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB).

Other Uses are There for Surfactants

• They may act as detergents, wetting agents, emulsifiers, solubilizers, foaming agents and pigmentdispersants. In personal care, surfactants are used tocreate lather and cleanse the skin and hair of dirt and

excess sebum; in fact, soap is the oldest surfactant stillused today.

• Emulsifiers are an important category of surfactants for

personal care. They are essential to produce creams orlotions by enabling oil and water/aqueous componentsto mix and remain stable over a long period of time.

• Choosing an optimum emulsifier system helps createevenly dispersed, small droplets, thus providing kineticstability and an elegant texture, skin feel andappearance.

• Typically, emulsions have a milky white, opaqueappearance due to the type and levels of emulsifiersused; however, there are microemulsions that appearclear or transparent to the human eye.

• These are used in specialized applications, such asenhancing skin permeation of active substances.Emulsifiers often impart a specific texture or sensory

aspect to the end product, so their selection isimportant for marketing appeal as well as technicalaspects.

Surfactants in mouth wash

• Surfactants are used in mouth washes

because they aid in the solubilization of

flavours and in the removal of debris by

providing foaming action

What do Surfactants Have to do With Skin Care?

• A surfactant's ability to attract both water and oil

makes it a useful chemical for use in face cleansing

products (removes the dirt and oil)

• Because oil and water do not mix well, simply

washing the face or hands with water does little to

wash off oils and dirt. Washing with a product that

includes a surfactant solves this problem.

Can Surfactants Irritate Sensitive Skin?

Some surfactants can cause irritation to sensitive skin.• Referred to as irritant contact dermatitis, the main

symptom of surfactant irritation is dry, red, andchapped skin.

• Some types of surfactants are more likely to causeirritation than others.

• For example, sodium lauryl sulfate carries a higher riskof irritation than sodium laureth sulfate.

• Some people may also have an allergy to the chemicals

used as surfactants.• If you use products with surfactants and notice

irritation, discontinue your use of the product.

surfactants(aliphatic acid salt)in the

soap are more than 80%

• Soap’s advantages: Good in cleaning, bulging,

emulsifying and breaking-up

• Disadvantage: It’s basicity long use may cause

the skin chaped

• Face cream

 – O/W,fabric is fine and smooth, no oily feeling,

good stability.

• Protective hand cream – O/W including10%-15%oil,5%-10%emollien

75%~85%water,flowing easily,breaking-up easily

,no oily feeling after using it

Sunscreen cream

• O/W

 – easy to realize ultraviolet ray absorbent’s

but waterproof ability is a little weak

• W/O

 – protecting from ultraviolet ray and waterproof ability are good, but basic dosage form’s

stabilization is a little weak.
