Primary surfactants and foaming agents
The production of each long lasting foam ac-companies all hygiene activities and is per-ceived as a sign of cleansing action. Foamability and stability of foam is related to the surfactant structure and is a domain of base surfactants. Products belonging to this class are a basic in-gredient of all wash-off formulations and make cleansing products what they are.

Secondary surfactants and emulsifiers
The differentiation of products and obtaining specific applications and aesthetic properties is achieved through use of co-surfactants. The application of secondary surfactant can have a synergistic effect on foaming, foam stability, rheology building properties and also improve mildness of the formulation. The dispersion of hydrophobic ingredients in water solution is achieved through the application of surface tension reducers. Emulsifiers arrange them-selves at the water/oil interfaces and allow for the solubilization of oils.

For some products, due to composition of sur-factant system and/or specific requirements, the use of special thickeners is required in the formulation. The example could be in delicate formulations like baby care products, where low concentration of sodium chloride and Sulfate free formulations are a market stan-
dard. Rheology modifying products find an applica¬tion where high viscosity of the formu-lation is required in order to achieve the desir-able effect. They are perlizers, capsule or shim-mer sus¬pensions and soap dispensers.

The activity of lowering surface tension be-tween solids and liquids is achieved by the application of wetting agents. This is neces-sary in various types of formulations such as shampoos or colourisation compositions. Better spreading of the dying product in hair ensures good pigment distribution and a better final effect. On the other hand, good hair wetting efficiency results from satisfying washing and supplementation as well if ap-plied in hair care products.

SURFACTANTS FOR COSMETICS & PERSONAL CARE APPLICATIONS
Betaines are surfactants belonging to a class of amphoteric surface active agents displaying an excellent skin mildness profile, very good foam characteristics and viscosity building properties. A combination of favourable application param-eters like abundant foam formation, compat-ibility with a wide range of surfactant systems and increased safety has made betaines one of the most widely used surfactants in all wash-off applications. Following market trends and an ever-growing interest in surfactants displaying mildness to skin and efficiency in cosmetic for-mulations, the Rokamina product range was de-veloped. A cutting edge technology applied by PCC SA in the production process allows for the achievement of unparalleled quality parameters that meet the highest standards of customer safety.

PCC EXOL SA has developed two classes of be-taines surfactants: Cocamidopropyl Betaines and Coco-Betaine whose parameters are sum-marized in the table. Rokamina K30, K30E, K40, and K40HC belong to the same chemical class, whereas Rokamina K30B is a single representa-tive of another class. The single thing in com-mon for Rokamina K30B, K30E and K40HC is their supreme purity making them suitable for all products where the sensitivity of the prod-uct is paramount. These products find applica-tion in:
• cosmetics for babies,• dermocosmetics,• high quality cosmetics.
Betaines
31
The addition of betaines to a standard anionic surfactant system not only optimizes the viscos-ity profile as a response to salt but also improves cleansing power and mildness of the final formu-lation. A synergistic effect of an anionic surfac-tant-betaines system gives the formulator a pow-erful tool in creating value added formulations. The viscosity building properties of a surfactant system comprising of Sodium Laureth Sulfate and different Betaines types was plotted on the graph below as a function of salt concentration.

SURFACTANTS FOR COSMETICS & PERSONAL CARE APPLICATIONS
There is a large possibility to formulate products that are characterized by outstanding foam us-ing blends of anionic and amphoteric surfac-tants. It also implies that the surfactant system has different foam properties than the anionic alone. This explains why betaines are so com-monly used in personal care formulation. They improve foam - an attribute that is very impor-tant to the consumer. Determination of the foaming capability was preformed according to PN-ISO 696:1994 (the modified Ross-Miles method) for the betaines solutions with a con-centration of 1.0 g/l in distilled water at a tem-perature of 25°C.

In a large number of applications (especially for shampoos) the capability of effective wetting is a desirable property of surfactants. The short-er the time of wetting the better the wetting and cleaning agent. The capability of wetting a cotton fabric was determined according to EN 1772:2001. The wetting time (time in seconds

can spread and wet surfaces. The addition of a surfactant de¬creases the surface tension and consequently increases solubilisation. Surfac-tants are said to make water “wetter”. The lower the surface ten¬sion, the better the wettability, hence the ability to dissolve and remove resi-dues.

PCC recommends to use EXOcare PC60 in the concentration ranging from 20-30% (w/w). The exact dose of our product depends on the in-dividual characteristics of the product that the formulator would like to achieve.
Example Formulation: Liquid Shampoo:
Procedure: Add demineralized water to the mixing kettle. Begin mixing. Add remaining part A. Heat the mixing kettle contents to 77-79°C. Add part B Ingredients to the mixing kettle. Reduce mixer speed, Mix until uniform. Keep temperature at 77-79°C. Once the batch is uniform, turn off the heat. Cool the batch to 42-47°C. Premix and separately add ingredients from part D. Add part E – mix until uniform and cool to 30-35°C.

The hydrophilic-hydrophobic balance is a parameter that determines the ratio of the content of the hydro-philic group and that of the hydrophobic group in a par-ticle. The validity scope of the HLB number for non-ionic surface-active compounds is included within the range of 0 to 20 and is the measure of the share of the hydro-philic group in the particle.
On the basis of the HLB scale, the range of the utility fit-ness of surface-active agents can be determined.
HLB NUMBER EO CONTENTS IN PRODUCT, % PRODUCT APPLICATION
1-3 5-15 Anti-foam agent

Cloud point Cloud point is an indicator determining the behaviour of water or other organic solutions of nonoionic surfactants. Solutions of surfactants become cloudy during heating and revers to clear solution at a certain temperature when cooled - this temperature is defined as ‘cloud point’.
Depending on the temperature range at which the solution becomes cloudy, five determination methods are discrimi-nated:
LZ saponification number of oxyethylenation product, mgKOH/g
LK acid number of acids subjected to oxyethylenation, mgKOH/g
where:
Method A – aqueous solution (10 - 90°C)
Method B – solution of NaCl 50g/l (>90°C)
Method C – solution of NaCl 100g/l (>90°C)
Method D – solution 45g of butyl diglycol/water (<10°C)
Method E – solution 25 g of butyl diglycol/water (<10°C)

The ingredients of cosmetics are first and fore-most the result of efforts made by many peo-ple. Specialized companies invent and pro-duce ingredients. Carefully tested substances are then sold to cosmetics manufacturers. For purchased ingredients to find themselves in cosmetics, they must undergo many tests, have adequate quality and be completely safe for humans.Cosmetic ingredients have many defined and specific properties. For example, UV filters help protect the skin and hair against the harmful effects of UV rays. Additives in the form of surfactants provide washing and cleansing properties. They create an active foam during use of shampoos or body wash products such as soap or shower gels. Surfactants also have

excellent thickening properties. They are used in the production of various types of emul-sions and concentrates used in cosmetics. Similarly, to ready cosmetics, Good Manufac-turing Practices are also applied in relation to raw materials and additives used in the pro-duction thereof. Manufacturers of cosmetics and personal hygiene products place great importance on the quality and properties of the ingredients that will affect the safety of use of the finished product. Therefore, cos-metics companies require manufacturers of raw materials to confirm that they use Good Manufacturing Practices. This provides assur-ance that the components used in their for-mulations are safe and are always of the same quality, irrespective of the batch number.
