JMS is a highly successful organization which has many years experience of providing

specialist blasting services to a wide range of industries.

Based in Lincoln UK, JMS operate all over Europe offering their experience and

expertise as a specialist surface preparation and texturing contractor able to tackle

virtually any surface.

Always using the very latest „hi-tech‟ dust free equipment, JMS has blasted just about

every kind of surface possible. Steel tanks in the Petro-Chemical industry, Ship Decks,

Wooden Floors, Concrete Floors in warehouses, Asphalt Surfaces on Highawys and in

Car Parks and removal of Rubber deposits from many international airport runways.

JMS are probably the most innovative specialist blasting company in the world and

have a simple philosophy towards business:

“Be the Best & Do It Right First Time”

This simple business motto has led to their excellent growth and their ability to retain

their customer base of leading high profile companies.

This high standard of work and unique experience is now brought to the Highways

Industry for improving safety, extending the life and reducing maintenance costs by Re

-Texturing roads.

The Highways The 242,000 miles of the UK road network is predominantly surfaced with asphalt

materials, whether the surface is Hot Rolled Asphalt (HRA) or a modern thin surfacing

system such as Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) as well as a variety of other surface

dressings. There is a continual requirement for the surface to provide a good level of

skid resistance for the safety of the motorist.

The SRV (Skid Resistance Value) requirement varies according to the category of road

and the level of risk of skidding accidents. This is set out in the Design Manual for

Roads and Bridges, Volume 7 Section 3 Part 1 HD28/04 and the highway authorities in

each country monitor the roads to measure their SRV against this standard.

As the various elements of weather and traffic use age the asphalt surface the skid

resistance declines, the aggregates become polished and a combination of wear and

build up of debris reduces both the Microtexture and Macrotexture, when the SRV level

falls below the requirement, some kind of maintenance activity has to be implemented

in order to bring the road back to the required standard.

Traditionally this has meant either planning out the entire surface course and laying

new materials or applying surface dressing. Both these options are very costly and

use up scarce natural resources, which often have to be transported over long

distances…

Now there is a new, more cost effective,

more environmentally friendly alternative!

The Process

JMS Retexturing offer this unique complete service to

all road authorities, the latest addition to the JMS Fleet

of blasters is the Blastrac 2-45D Truck Blaster, a

complete mobile surface processing workshop

It cleans and retextures the surface of highways in a continuous computer controlled

process. The accuracy is finely controlled by the operator from the on board touch

screen computer in the vehicles cab. The operator has a continuous close up view of

the blast head and surface from high quality on board cameras

The totally contained/enclosed process uses tiny steel balls (shot), which are thrown at

the surface at high velocity. This abrades the surface, removing any contamination and

re-forming the texture depth and properties of the surface materials.

The shot and the dust / debris from the surface is drawn up into the machine where it is

separated. The shot being continually recycled while the dust and debris removed is

collected in a large sealed container in the rear of the truck and can be recycled.

No damaging water or chemicals are used in the process. The dust / debris which is

removed (a mixture of bitumen, aggregate fines and a small amount of iron), is

classified under the waste management Regulations 1994 as non-hazardous, the same

classification as asphalt arisings and can be fully recycled by incorporating in the

manufacture of new asphalt or taken by licenced carriers to waste.

The truck blaster can process up to 3000m2 per hour.

The strength or degree of blasting required is infinitely variable and will depend on the

surface material being blasted and the requirements of the client.

Results

Improved Microtexture—better skid resistance, reduced accidents

Improved Macrotexture—better drainage, reduced aquaplaning

Improved early life skid resistance of SMA‟s

References

The JMS retexturing process has already been used by

highway authorities throughout the UK with excellent results.

Below is a typical example.

The A2070 Trunk Road (Brenzett to M20 Junction 10, Ashford)

Re-Texturing was carried out at this location in January 2007 in order to improve the

skid resistance of the hot rolled asphalt surface which had become polished.

When compared to other methods, Retexturing has been shown to be the most

effective way to improve both Microtexture and Macrotexture and it does this without

any detrimental effect to the structural integrity of the surface course material.

Other Authorities using JMS Retexturing to improve skid resistance include:

Hampshire, East Sussex, West Sussex, H.A. InterRoute Area 4, Cheshire, Stockport,

Fife, Transerve, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Cornwall & Gloucestershire

A Complete Service

JMS Retexturing can provide total project management including Site Survey, Health &

Safety Management, Traffic Management and Waste Management

JMS are fully insured for highways work with both Public and Employers liability

insurance.

JMS invests in its future by providing specialist training for employees and maintains a

knowledgeable and professional service to its clients.

JMS Retexturing provides a cleaner and safer environment.
