The most popular way to surf the Mentawai Islands is bycharter boat, but there are also a couple of great resorts ifyou prefer land-based accommodation or are planning totravel with a non-surfing partner. ThundersThundersThundersThundersThunders is another largeleft that both picks up, andcan hold the biggest swells.It’s a top to bottom waveon the outside, that gets abit mellower on the insidesection. Another wave thatusually has a lot of watermov-ing about, so a biggerboard can come in handy.

TheTheTheThe HoleHoleHoleHoleThe Hole is another veryhollow left off a small islandin the southern end of theMentawais.Starts barrelling from takeoff, but never really stopsuntil a close out section atthe end of the reef.Definitely not a place tostraighten out at.

RagsRagsRagsRags LeftLeftLeftLeftRags Left is a sick lefthanderthat can hold the biggestswells. It is very hollow andcan often dish out some of theheaviest hold-downs in the

island chain. Usually a bit morewater mov-ing around so alarger board can be useful.

RiflesRiflesRiflesRiflesRifles is one of the best wavesin the Menta-wais. A very longright-hander that wraps

around the other side of thesame island as No Kanduis.Rarely makeable from start tofinish, but even just fromsection to section you canscore epic rides up to 100yards or longer. Nice andhollow when it’s a few feetoverhead, but usually a littlesectiony when it’s smaller.

Leftsstart peeling way up thepoint, and then graduallyslow down as they approachthe channel. The further upthe point you paddle, thefaster it barrels when youtake off. After the initialbarrel ride, the wave offersone of the most rippablewalls to unleash anymanoeuvre you can think ofduring your surfsurfsurfsurf tripstripstripstrips.

The maintakeoff spot is up the pointwhere most of the waves startbarrelling and peel flawlesslydown the reef. On larger swellsit can be very shifty and hard toread. It can shift more to theend bowl where it can break,reform, then bowl again into thechannel. The inside is veryshallow and is of-ten referred toas the “surgeon’s table” due tothe many reef-cuts doled out totravelling surfers.

ToytownToytownToytownToytown LeftsLeftsLeftsLeftsToytown Lefts is a perfectly shaped peeling left locateddeep in the bay. It really only starts to work on largerswells. You can cruise down the line or hit the lip overand over again.

TheTheTheThe PigPigPigPigThe Pig is a deep water right-hand break exposedto all possible swell. Rarely below head-high “ThePig” provides some exhilarat-ing drops and bigopen faces.

IndiesIndiesIndiesIndies 1111 andandandand 2222Indies 1 and 2 “Indies” 1 and 2 get their namesbecause they are the outside breaks and in-dicatorsfor “Treasures”. These two waves are for experiencedsurfers only and produce heart-pumping barrels overshallow reef. The bigger the swell the better!

GorillaGorillaGorillaGorilla’’’’ssssGorilla’s is an untamed right-hand beast that is rarelysurfed. It is the type of wave that will really deflateyour ego if it smashes you.Make sure you pack your peanuts!

MiniMiniMiniMini’’’’ssssMini’s is located deep in the bay “Mini’s” is aplayful right which peaks up and delivers a shortbarrel and workable face. It only starts working onlarger swells, as it picks up half the swell ofTreasure Island.

ClaretsClaretsClaretsClaretsClarets is a beautiful long left-hand point whichpeels down the line offering a per-fect openworkable face. You will be able to perfect your bigcarving turns or hunt down some inside barrels.

CobraCobraCobraCobraCobra is a world-class left-hander that can produce anepic 8-10 second barrel or nice ripable facedepending on swell direction.Cobra’s clean blue lines peel down the reef into achannel, which can provide a perfect photoopportunity.

3. Southern Atolls best from February to Apriland from September to November. There arealways waves in the area, but the winds becomevery strong at other times.

The most famous breaks are in North Male’ At-olls.These points offer rights and lefts. Always something forbeginners or for professional surfers, with waves from

ranging from 1 to 3 meters with long point breaks. Surfspots can be accessed in two ways; by surf charter, or

by dhoni transferring surfers from the resorts.Although not all the spots can be accessed from theresorts.

Usually surfers prefer the surf charters to reach thedifferent points in North and South Male’Atolls, as they have no constraints and can chooseamong the most famous breaks. Don’t leave withoutsurfing Cokes, Jailbreaks (Himmafushi), Honky’s,Sultans and TuckyJoes!


Around 140kms south of Male lie the CentralAtolls. This area was explored by seaplane on anOxbow expedition in 2004, and from there the firstCentral Atolls surf charters began. To this day fewboats canvas this area, so it’s perfect for thosewanting to experience un-crowded surf.

There are atolls, about 340kms south of Male, with atleast a dozen high level reef breaks. Only just recentlyincreasing in popularity, these atolls are less travelleddue to their dis-tance from Male. The Meemu, Thaa and Laamu Atolls offer spotsexposed to all wind directions and for all levels.All spots in the Meemu Atoll are on a coastlinefacing to the east. There is always a left or aright hander well protected from thepredominant south westerly wind, but southeasterly or even easterly winds may affect allspots negatively. All spots are close to eachother so you can change spots within a fewminutes!The Thaa Atoll picks up south east swell andmay be even bigger than spots on east fac-ingcoastlines of other atolls. Due to its seclud-edlocation it is almost guaranteed that you willnot even spot another surf charter duringyour stay. The spots are well protected fromNorth to Northwest winds. described at all yet. Nevertheless someadventurous surf-ers have discoveredthe area and found several spots onthe south but also at the west and eastfacing parts of the atoll. Es-pecially theleft hander on the island of Vil-ingiliand the right hander just south of Ganare known to offer good days. TheAddu At-oll doesn’t have the perfectlyshaped soft breaking waves. It istechnically more chal-lenging as itrequires more flexibility to make thesections or to get enough speed out ofthe less powerful faces. The swellexposure is the best of the wholeMaldives.

In theright wind directions it offers a funlefthander with differ-ent sections andtake off points. The waves hit from deepwater and provide some heavy barrels atcertain spots of the reef. The bot-tom ofthe reef is a bit uneven which makes thewave funny at times and changes fromheavy to soft within a few meters. Forthose of you that can adapt quickly theVilingili left can be tons of fun and highquality. Once the winds swing aroundmore to the south east the end section ofthis wave can be firing.

Whilst the likes of Cloudbreak, Frigates Pas-sage andNamotu are well known and photo-graphed, it will bethe ‘as yet undiscovered’ or unpublicised gems of theouter islands and reefs that will ensure this countrycontinues to grow as a surfing destination of choice.Most of the islands are surrounded by barrier reefs

which makes the water quite calm but there aresome amazing breaks that allow the full power of thePacific Ocean to crash in. Most reef breaks aroundthe islands are accessed by boat transfers and liveaboard surf boat charters have not really taken offhere, which keeps the crowds down.



Fiji has a renowned reputation amongst the international surf community. There are a half dozen spots that haveproven to have world-class surf, and that is just the beginning with more unnamed and un-ridden surf spotswait-ing to be discovered. Almost all of the named breaks are off the main island of Viti Levu or the nearby islandchain known as the Mama-nuca Islands.The surf, which is generally all outer coral reef and overhead high, can be challenging for inexperienced surfers.For this reason surfers need to be competent and confident. There

is a beach break near Sigatoka river mouth, but it’s said to be quite challenging and we’ve found it to be shark infestedand muddy brown water. Alternatively, the less experienced surf-er can be catered for at Little Daku at Naninya IslandResort or Shifties which you can access from Matanivusi off Veti Levu(see below).Recommended surfboards would be a ‘hot-dog’ short board and a larger semi-gun for the bigger days. Boardshorts can be worn year-round, a rashie and sunscreen are needed for sun protection and booties are optionalfor the reef.

This outside pointof the barrier reef picks up all the swell and can bedouble the size of J’s and Vunaniu. It is powerful andthick.When everywhere else is flat, you can almostguarantee a 4-foot wave at Shifties. It can be surfedat all tides. Again, a wind of the north quadrant isneeded.

It’s a hollow,fast, ledgey barrel, but only good around high tide.Starts work-ing at less than 3ft and holds up to 6ft plus.Year-round wave, although it is more consist-ent fromMay to October. Recommended for experienced surfersonly.

Because ofthe gradual tapering of the reef, it can handle all swellsizes. The SE trade winds are offshore, so when theinside waves near Matanivusi are blown out, there isal-ways the consistent Frigates. Because it’s out in theocean, about 20 kilometres from Ma-tanivusi, it picks upall swell. However, some west in the swell can make it abit dicey. It definitely makes the end section stand up!Frigates is accessed by a number of resorts and can getcrowded. However, once the swell gets up over 10’,there is a drop in the numbers tackling the waves. Alonger board is recommended to tackle the big dropsand strong offshore winds.

It breaks both right and leftbut the right is generally better. The trade winds areon-shore/across this break but the summer wind(north-easterly) is directly offshore. It is also best earlymorning before the trade winds start.

The average size is 3 ft to 5 ftoffshore, but it can hold up to 15 ft plus. It was named KingKong because of the famous 1935 movie which was part-lyfilmed underneath the mountain Nabukelevuira. This mountainalso has a moderating effect on the wind at the King Kong Leftbreak so that it is still op-erating when other areas are blownout.

By using a little com-monsense you’ll more likely be smothered insmiles than encounter any problems. Onegovernment official has stating saying there isstill tribal flighting in the Highlands, but theystop flighting and pose for you when they seeyou have a camera!The geography is as diverse as it is unique. Thecountry is an island, nearly the size of acontinent, which is divided down the mid-

dle east from west. The eastern half, calledPapua New Guinea, has been independent fora dozen years, while the western half is theIndonesian province of Irian Jaya. There is aspine of mountains that run the length of theisland forming the populous highlands re-


gion with the highest point being Mt Wilhelm(4,500m). Rainforests are dense and located aroundthe lowlands and coastal areas which have made itdifficult to create a transporta-tion infrastructure, soin some areas the only way to get from one point toanother is by air. Thewa-ter is deeper andlong rides, with a nicewall, ending with ahollow bowl sectioncan be had. Good forlong boards and midsize fish fun boardsand twin fins.

NAGONAGONAGONAGO ISLANDISLANDISLANDISLANDNAGO ISLAND - Thispicturesque little islandhas both a left andright-hander. Theleft-hander is a bit of awave magnet and veryconsistent. A greathotdog, fun wave thathas a nice tubing insidewall section. Likes low tomid-tide as it can be a bitfat and break too close tothe inside ledge on hightide. It does not like too

much swell, but can stillbe fun on a light onshore.This is one of the mostsurfed breaks in the area.The right-hander on theother side of the islandhas a very fast, long wall.It likes a mid to low tide,is a little incon-sistent,but a great ride when it’son. Keep an eye on thisbreak when the swellcomes up.

RALRALRALRAL ISLANDISLANDISLANDISLANDRAL ISLAND - A small,uninhabited islandsituated further out to sea.A great place to go if thereis no swell anywhere else,Ral attracts more swellthan the other breaks inthe region. Best surfed onsmall, clean swells, theright-hander can at timesbe peaky like a beachbreak, and some-timescan line up like a pointbreak. The left is not asconsistent as the right, butworth check-ing. Bothwaves pack a bit of punchonce the wave height getsbigger. Ral can also handlemore surfers than most ofthe other breaks.

There are uncountable more breaks on offer in PNG, you

can discover these by getting out of the Kavieng area byland or by sea. The other areas have similar surfmanagement systems to Kavieng, so restrictions onsurfer numbers are still imposed. Boat charters canoften get you to the Islands of St Matthias, the eastcoast group of islands of New Ireland, and to theAdmiralty Islands to the far North West of Kavieng.

Howeverdon’t be disheartened if you are learning or anintermediate, there are plenty of options for alllevels.

30 - 40 minutes down the road from Biarritz,

France is the Spanish Basque Country. San Se-bastian is a beautiful little old town where you can findfun waves and delicious tapas. An-other hour along the northern coast of Spain takes you to thefishing village of Mundaka, which is a river mouth with one of the best and most famous lefts inEurope.

There are waves all year around but it is the winter that brings the biggest and most con-sistentwaves to this area. The main (and warmer!) surf season is between May - Octo-ber.Surfing in Spain was first introduced sometime around 1960 when a couple of intrepid surf-ers fromFrance went on safari looking for new waves in the Basque Region. Today, Spain holds the Billabong ProMundaka which is a major stop on the ASP World Tour circuit. Spain has now become one of the primesurf desti-

nations in Europe for its warmer temperatures, and vast array of beach breaks, rivermouths, andreef breaks.Spain has now become one of the prime surf destinations in Europe for its warmer temper-atures,and vast array of beach breaks, river mouths, and reef breaks.There are great waves for all levels here in-cluding some great learn to surf waves such as Loredo.Spain entices travellers from all over the world for their friendly locals, beau-tiful beaches, partyatmosphere and wild festivals. If you go in summer (June, July, Au-gust), don’t miss the Running ofthe Bulls in Pamplona near San Sebastian in early July or La Tomatina, the tomato street fight inBunol near Valencia at the end of August. Portugal, in Southern Europe, shares the Ibe-rian peninsula at the western tip of Europe with Spain. Itpicks up north, west and south swells, resulting in very regular surf. Very mild climate with plenty ofconsistent surf and va-riety of breaks, shape Portugal’s reputation to be the place to quench thirst forEuropean. It is an excellent place to learn to surf with lots of places offering mild points and surf lessons.Visits by big-wave specialists like Ross Clarke-Jones and Manoa Drollet, suggest the level of difficulty onecan find in some other areas, particularly in the winter time of big swells.

The south west of France hasthe famous Hossegor barrels, where a deep trench crossesthe continental shelf delivering big swells from the AtlanticOcean. When the swell is too big, you can travel furtherdown the coast into the French Basque Country where youcan ride reef and point breaks that hold big swells as wellas provide shelter from the wind.Hossegor gets crowded in August but you can always findless-crowded waves if you are pre-pared to go searchingjust 10 minutes or so fur-ther up the coast. The rest of thetime you can find good waves with few crowds especially ifyou are willing to get out there early! It’s bright well before6am in summer so you can get un-crowded waves if youare an early riser!

Slabs of reef dot the coast and there are alsocoves, headlands and a series of jetties in Anglet, whichare protected from the wind.

The Graviere is a really heavy, barrel with a thicklip just to the north of the Rock Food; it’s basically a seriousshorebreak onto the beach. When the swell is over 6 foot,a wave called Le Nord breaks into deeper water straightout the front of the Rock Food. There is a channel to getyou out the back, the waves are big and heavy and thehold-downs are sobering….these waves are for theintermediate to advanced surfer.

GuetharyGuetharyGuetharyGuethary //// LafiteniaLafiteniaLafiteniaLafiteniaFamous waves like Guethary and Lafitenia at-tract thecrowds from far and wide, especially when the northernbeaches in Hossegor are too big to surf. Depending on theswell direc-tion, it’s usually a few feet smaller in the Basquecountry so this area caters for all levels of surfing.

LeLeLeLe SudSudSudSud //// LaLaLaLa PistePistePistePisteIf the waves are too big then go to the next breakdown, which is called Le Sud – it’s lo-cated on theHossegor side of the port. If the waves are huge, theonly place to surf is in between the groynes atCapbreton, which is more suitable for beginners as itis sheltered from the big swells. Further south again isa wave called La Piste, which is another heavy,barrelling beach break.

CulsnusCulsnusCulsnusCulsnus //// EstagnotsEstagnotsEstagnotsEstagnotsJust north of the Graviere is a nudist beach called lesCulsnus (literally translated as bare bum beach) – insummer you will walk through the naturalists on thebeach to get to some really good A-frame barrels.Further north again, you get to a popular beach calledLes Estagnots – there’s a great bar / restau-rant in thecar park here owned by an Aussie called Woody.Another 15 minutes walk up this beach takes you to LesBourdaines. This is where the best sandbanks often formand where the ASP surfing contests are sometimes held.The Cream Café is a good bar / res-taurant situated inthe car park right next to The Perfect Wave EuropeanHeadquarters.

It’s a powerful wave with a big ledgeytake-off and a nice drop leading back to the channel.Going left when it’s big will leave you in the impactzone and watch out for the currents.
