After the April 9, 1942, U.S. surrender of the Bataan Peninsula on the main Philippine island of Luzon to the Japanese during World War II (1939-45), the approximately 75,000 Filipino and American troops on Bataan were forced to make an arduous 65-mile march to prison camps. The marchers made the trek in intense heat and were subjected to harsh treatment by Japanese guards. Thousands perished in what became known as the Bataan Death March. In honor of this special group of World War II heroes, cadets from the Surfrider Battalion, as well as thousands of other participants across the country, both military and civilian, participated in the annual Bataan Memorial Death March marathon. This event takes place in White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, and consists of a 26.2 marathon on a grueling course where military participants can either run light

(Full Army Combat Uniform) or heavy (Full Army Combat Uniform with the addition of a 35+ pound ruck sack). This year, the UCSB Surfrider Battalion sent 14 cadets comprising of one heavy team, one light team, and a number of cadets running the event individually. These cadets trained throughout Winter Quarter, running every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday along with regularly scheduled Physical Training on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The hard work paid off, as every cadet was able to fi nish the marathon. Additionally, Cadet Dominque Chan completed the marathon with the fastest time in her age group finishing in 5 hours and 10 minutes, while Cadet Declan Harris fi nished with the heaviest weighing ruck at 68 lbs.

Way to go Surfriders!

The Surfrider Battalion continued to utilize mentorship groups in order to create a family-like atmosphere within the ROTC program. Each MSIV is assigned three to four cadets from the MSI-MSIII class at the beginning of the school year to provide guidance and support. Cadets are able to build personal relationships within each mentor group, while senior cadets are able to assist incoming freshmen transition into college and ROTC life. This year, MSIV cadets also assisted their MSIII mentees with their Talent Assessment packets, which are used during the accessions process. Aside from professional development, mentor groups also took the opportunity to go out on adventurous trips to form tight-knit bonds.

ENDURANCE TRAINING

THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, THE SURFRIDER BATTALION CONTINUED ITS TRADITIONALLY EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE IN PHYSICAL TRAINING THAT RESULTED IN HIGH ARMY PHYSICAL FITNESS TEST SCORES IN EACH MILITARY SCIENCE CLASS. CADETS WENT THROUGH INTENSE PHYSICAL TRAINING EVERY MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, AND FRIDAY MORNINGS FROM 0630-0730. PHYSICAL TRAINING CONSISTS OF DISTANCE RUNNING, HIGH INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING, AB-BLASTERS WITH PLANK COMPETITIONS, COMBAT WATER SURVIVAL TRAINING, AND THE CADET-FAVORITE BEACH WORKOUTS.

The Surfrider Battalion developed their tactical and technical skills during leadership labs that were held every Thursday. These labs consisted of a variety of soldier and leadership skills ranging from Drill and Ceremony, Land Navigation, Virtual Battlefi eld Simulation (VBS) system familiarization, Squad level Tactical Exercises, and Patrol Operations. Third year cadets typically led tactical missions as a Squad Leader or Patrol Leader, while fi rst and second year cadets gained a familiarization with these tasks.

The Spring Quarter Leadership Development Exercise is an all-encompassing training event that took place from April 1-3, 2016. The Surfrider Battalion coordinated with Fresno State and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to conduct the weekend long training at Camp Roberts, CA. Surfriders arrived in style, as con-tracted cadets boarded CH-47 Chinooks to travel to Camp Roberts. The Assistant Professor of Military Science, CPT Jose Hernandez, who is an Aviation offi cer, coordinated the movement. Upon arrival to the train-ing site, cadets underwent intense tactical exercises that tested the ability of MSIII cadets from all three universities. All cadets experienced sleeping out in the field in Patrol Bases, and lived off of MREs and the contents of their rucks. This year, cadets had the unique experience of clearing buildings, taught by MSG Armstrong and Mr. Nieratko, who is a 20 year Military Police Veteran.

5K FUN RUN

2016 marked the 100th year anniversary of JROTC and ROTC. To celebrate this event, ROTC programs across the nation participated in 5k Fun Runs at each host university. Surfriders enjoyed the luxury of running on the beach with friends and fellow alumni. The weather was perfect and the ending featured a photo fi nish between MSIV Cadet Nicholas Brischler and MSII Cadet Andrew Ripley. All in all, it was a great experience for everyone who participated in this celebratory event.

This year’s Surfirder Battalion Dining Out (Military Ball) took place on May 21, 2016 at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, which is located in the Santa Barbara Harbor. Our cadet-run military ball committee planned the event throughout the course of the school year and did an excellent job hosting a fun-filled night. The night featured a buffet for dinner, legendary skits performed by each military science class, and the infamous grog ceremony where senior cadets drank a concoction created by ingredients from cadre and each military science class. Overall, the night was a huge success and was an extraordinary way to celebrate the end of the year.

On May 26, 2016, First Lieutenant Eric Chu, a 2013 graduate from the UCSB ROTC

program, came to UCSB to talk to MSIVs about his experiences as a lieutenant. 1LT Chu

briefed the senior cadets what he would typically teach new lieutenants that arrive at

Joint Base Lewis-McChord near Tacoma, Washington. 1LT Chu has been doing great

things in the Army and will take the position of General’s Aide in the upcoming year.

The soon-to-be commissioning Surfriders were fortunate to learn from a successful

Surfrider Alum.
