Over the past 17 years, our ounder has been developing a Sur Instructor Certication Program that is the rst o

its kind in North America. This ve tiered system requires instructors to meet strict requirements to receive their

certication. In order to achieve each level, instructors must pass multiple tness tests, including an open oceanswim test and a challenging written exam. WB Sur Camp is also an authorized provider o the American Red Cross

training system, so not only do we hire Lieguard, CPR, and First Aid certied instructors, we are licensed to train

in these areas as well.

Our pre-season team training is designed with the aid o local Ocean Saety experts outside o our organization.

We also collaborate with leading educational authorities to refect the most current ocean saety inormation.

On a weekly basis, all instructors are reviewed by their Director and Assistant Director using a 30 point

inspection. Communication between sta is key to keeping a program running smoothly and reviews are a very

important part o this process.

All sta are either enrolled in an undergraduate program or already hold college degrees. We employ not only

instructors, but mentors who have extensive experience working with teenagers. Our team consists o college

proessors, high school teachers, pro surers, dolphin and animal trainers, marine biologists, and graduate

students. Passion or the environment is something that is elt by all o us at WB Sur Camp, which is why most o

our sta have degrees in the marine or environmental sciences. We set the bar very high or our team in order to

provide a learn-to-sur summer camp experience unlike any other.

What motivates our team is not only a love of surng and

sharing this love with teenagers, but also our desire to instill in our campers a need to protect the delicate ecosystemin which we all live.

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouseis nicknamed the

“Wave Magnet.”Come surf it with us!

8/2/2019 Surf Camp 2012 Teen Catalog Low Res

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/surf-camp-2012-teen-catalog-low-res 21/48

This camp is based in Cape Hatteras, an island that links the chain o barrier islands known as

the Outer Banks. “Hatteras” is an East Coast mecca or both beginner and proessional surers.

The tip o the cape is geographically positioned at the eastern most point on the continental

shel giving the Outer Banks the most consistent sur on the eastern seaboard. The Cape

Hatteras Lighthouse was built in 1870. Nicknamed the “Wave Magnet”, the lighthouse is many

things; the tallest in the country, a national icon, and a historical landmark that used to warn

sailors to stay back rom the same shallow sandbars that we love to sur!

While WB Sur Camp caters to the absolute beginner, Cape Hatteras is a great place or

intermediate surers to improve their skills, as dierent breaks oer waves or varying abilitylevels. Campers learn how to predict, select, and judge waves, while discovering why some

breaks are better than others.

We surf miles of beautiful golden sand beaches including

Avon, Buxton, Rodanthe, Frisco, and Kitty Hawk.

As in all o our programs, campers learn about the amazing coastal ecology o this dynamic

string o barrier islands. The warm Gul Stream and the cold Labrador Current converge at the

Outer Banks, creating an amazing ecosystem rich in diverse marine lie.

We will visit the Army Corps o Engineers’ Field Research Facility, an internationally recognized

coastal observatory, to learn how oceanic events are measured and how marine lie is aected

by beach erosion and dune rebuilding. As with many coastal communities in the US, the Outer

Banks is in need o volunteers to help with beach cleanups, oyster bed renourishment, and

other environmental restoration projects. We will work together on one o these projects, with

campers earning 5 community service hours.

Tuition includes: lodging in air-conditioned cabins at the KOA Campground, all meals (rom lunch

on the rst day to lunch on the last day), 24-hour same-gender adult supervision, activity ees,

equipment (surboard rentals and rashguard usage), 3:1 ratio proessional surng instruction, all transportation including pickup and return to Wilmington International Airport (ILM), WB Sur

Camp T-shirts, Surticate o Achievement, and memorable group photo. WB Sur Campers are

responsible or round trip airare to the Wilmington International Airport (ILM), transportation

to Wilmington, NC, or to the KOA Campground.

Want to earn money towards your WB Sur Camp tuition AND help the environment?Participate in our Bags or Bucks program and you can do just that!

How it works

Family and riends will sponsor you, contributing any amount they choose towards yourtuition for every paper grocery bag of trash you collect. You may collect trash from any

public location as long as it is not near a road (or saety reasons). While not required, weencourage you to recycle any trash deemed recyclable.

32

How to participate

• E-mail [email protected] sign up.

• We will reply to you with a letter to give your sponsors explaining how the

program works, and a orm to keep track o your sponsors and how many bagsyou collect.

• Take a picture of each bag of trash you collect and post it to our Facebook

page. We will check our page daily or newly posted photos.

• By June 1st, send us your form and the money you’ve earned from your

sponsors and we will credit your invoice.

 Things to consider about litter

• Litter has severe environmental consequences. It eventually makes itsway into local waterways, creating the potential or severe environmental

contamination.

• Litter isn’t just ugly, it’s toxic! Once exposed to the elements, plastics begin tobreak down and both release toxins and absorb them.

• We are what we eat. I they become small enough or even look similar toanything in the ood chain, they become part o the ood chain rom thesmallest to the largest creatures in water, air, or on land. We then becomeexposed through the ood we eat and other creatures suer rom both thephysical and chemical nature o our trash.

I I have never sured beore, is WB Sur Camp or me?

We cater to the absolute beginner. There is no need to have any surng experience toparticipate in our program. You just need to know how to swim.

I I have some sur experience and want to work on more advanced maneuvers, which campdo you recommend?

Our Costa Rica, Caliornia, and Outer Banks travel camps as well as our Board Buildingspecialty camp are designed or beginner to intermediate level surers. Please call our oceor more details beore registering to make sure you choose the right camp or you.

How much surng will I be doing?

All o our programs are slightly dierent. We are a sur-intensive camp and it is the mainactivity in all o our programs, but in our two week travel adventures it’s almost every day.Surng is a physically intensive sport. So we’ve learned to pace ourselves and balance themaximum amount o surng time with the right amount o energy. But don’t worry, there is nowasted time, as we re-energize while learning new skills and exploring new cultures.

What are the ages o your overnight campers? Am I too young or old to attend one o yourprograms?

For our Wrightsville Beach Overnight Camps, participants are ages 11-16. There are eightsessions to choose rom with varying age groups. For our Outer Banks Camp, participantsare ages 13-16, and participants in all o our other travel camps are ages 14-18. All o our Specialty Camps vary depending on the nature o each individual camp. We do allowoccasional exceptions based on your birthday and surng/ocean experience. We also oeradult and kids programs. See our website or call or details.

Where do other participants come rom?

Our programs are made up o diverse groups o campers who come rom all parts o theworld. This opens the door or campers to learn about unique cultures and backgrounds thatare different from their own. The diversity found in our programs is unmatched. You will leave

having ound new riends rom all over the world! To date we’ve had teens visit us rom 46

US states and 20 dierent countries.

Is there a lieguard at the beach you use? I am worried about some o the saety aspectso a sur camp.

All instructors are certied lieguards, and hold current certications in First Aid and CPR orthe Proessional Rescuer. We keep our student-to-instructor ratio at no more than 3:1, withthe exception o 5:1 in our Spring Break and Specialty Camps, allowing or personalizedinstruction and maximized saety. In the history o WB Sur Camp, we have had no serioussaety issues.

What kind o supervision is there?

Campers are supervised 24 hours a day. Full days o camp activities are planned, and at

night, counselors stay in adjacent rooms in order to ensure the saety and well-being o allcampers.

What is the best way to make my fight arrangements?

You will be sent via e-mail a detailed registration handbook after you enroll in camp. In the

handbook you will nd inormation regarding airports and preerred arrival/departure times. Our Reservation Specialists are available to answer any questions you may have aboutfights.

For our Costa Rica camp, our educators meet all participants once they have cleared customs, unless you opt or the Atlanta International Airport (ATL) meet and greet option where oneo your instructors will accompany you to Costa Rica.

How old are the kids I will be rooming with?

Campers o the same gender and similar age are roomed together. The questionnaires inyour registration materials help us get to know you beore camp, and allow us to best placeyou with your Sur Camp roommates.

Where will I be eating?

We eat at a variety o local ood spots, making sure everyone gets a chance to sample thenative favors o whichever WB Sur Camp location they’ve chosen. We can accommodate

WB Sur Camp is completely independent and privately owned, so we

are unded only by our own success. The better we perorm, the more

we can ulll our mission statement o environmental conservation. We

also know that when it comes down to it - no matter what kind o dierence we want to make as a company, and no matter how much

you share those values - i our camps are not both educational and

exciting, we are not living up to our ullest potential.

We believe in integrating philanthropy into our company culture

and make giving back to social and environmental endeavors a

undamental part o our organization. Each year, we adopt a amily

through Cape Fear Community College’s Holiday Helpers program.

Our entire team participates, working together to provide a joyous

holiday experience to a amily in need. We initiate a clothing drive in

the winter to gather new and gently used clothing or donation to a

local shelter. A percentage o each camper’s tuition is donated directly

to the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital, an amount that totals over

$36,500 to date.

We eel blessed or the work we do or a living and know that giving

back is the right thing to do! When you select WB Sur Camp, you

support our eorts to make the world a better place!

• One o our goals is to empower nancially disadvantaged students

by helping them experience physical accomplishment, become

more environmentally conscious, assume leadership roles, and

grow in sel condence.

• In 2011 we awarded over $34,000 in nancial assistance to

amilies in need.

• In our Aloha Charity Camps series, we oered complimentary sur

instruction to Alopecia and Cancer Survivors, Veterans, Teachers,

Moms, UNCW Students, and Sea Turtle Hospital interns.

• We strongly believe that everyone should have the chance to

experience the magic o surng and its connection to coastal

conservation.
