Most of all Lent the time to think about our disci- pleship, our Christian living, and about growing as intentional disciples of Jesus Christ. It is a time to put into practice a virtue or a good habit that we would wish to continue once Lent has concluded. It is a time for conversion, for genuine change. We are all well aware of how difficult change is but fortunately we were never intended to achieve sal- vation by our own efforts alone. We are sinners and we are in constant need of the soothing grace of God’s mercy. Deciding What to Do in Lent?

Mass is an absolute priority for an intentional disciple of Jesus Christ. Begin Lent in the best possible way by attending Mass on Ash Wednesday and having the ashes imposed. Attend Mass each Sunday and on weekdays when possible. An intentional disciple of Jesus Christ needs to be committed to daily prayer. Commit yourself to one hour of Eucharistic Adoration each week. Spend fifteen minutes each day in silent prayer in a place where there is silence. Read and re-flect upon the Word of God each day. Say Grace Be-fore and After Meals as a family. Pray in the morning and at night before going to bed. An intentional disciple of Jesus Christ is called to self-denial. It can be fasting from food or drink for a pe-riod of time. Friday is a good day to fast when we re-call the death of Jesus on the cross. We undertake penance and fasting so that our desire for God might grow. Self-denial might involve giving up something we like but it might also involve being more generous or doing something extra. Almsgiving is also a characteristic of an intentional dis-ciple of Jesus Christ. This involves giving generously to the poor. This year is a Year of Faith in Action in our diocese. This means visiting someone who lives alone, supporting CAFOD and the Covenant with the Poor, responding to the needs of people in need. It means giving not only of our possessions but also of our time. Stations of the Cross is a special devotion particularly suited to the season of Lent. An intentional disciple of Jesus Christ is called to renounce himself, to take up his cross and follow the Lord. In the Stations of the Cross we reflect on the sufferings of Christ and on his death undertaken for our salvation and salvation of the world. Lent is a time of repentance for an intentional disciple

of Jesus Christ. Commit yourself to availing of the Sacrament of Confession at least once in the sea-son of Lent. You can go to confession individually at the advertised times for confession in the parish or you can attend one of the Penitential Liturgies. This Sacrament is a wonderful opportunity to ex-perience the grace and mercy of God. Most of all Lent the time to think about our disci-

pleship, our Christian living, and about growing as

intentional disciples of Jesus Christ. It is a time to

put into practice a virtue or a good habit that we

would wish to continue once Lent has concluded.

It is a time for conversion, for genuine change. We

are all well aware of how difficult change is but

fortunately we were never intended to achieve sal-

vation by our own efforts alone. We are sinners

and we are in constant need of the soothing grace

of God’s mercy. I invite you to pray for our parish

and for one another that Lent might truly be a

time of grace and conversion for us all.
